You're looking at a distribution as a monolithic entity. You can easily updrade or patch nearly everything that came with your Linux distribution without upgrading to a higher numbered revision of the distribution.
You can't really compare Windows an Linux in this manner as Windows is a monolithic system and Linux is not.
With due respect, did it ever cross your mind that most Americans believe we're living in the best nation on earth because we do know a thing or two about the rest of the world?
Where would you suggest we should prefer to live? Keep in mind that we already live in the most free, most democratic, and most prosperous nation not only on earth now, but in earth's history?
Kinda burns you up thinking about it, doesn't it?
That's debatable:
most free - How many people do we have in jail for victimless crimes? There are nations that don't protect you from your own choices, nor impose puritanical values on you.
most democratic - Proportional representation, Europe has it, we don't. That's why we're essentaily a two party nation. Then there's the electoral college, didn't the majority of voting Americans vote for Gore?
I've got a few books that I carry on my PDA, but I've always loved books. I prefer ink on paper, but I agree, that a book with the text on CD included would be great. That'd save me a lot of trouble since I've been considering purchasing an pen scanner to OCR (look! I made a verb!) some things to electronic format.
I've got a few books on my PalmVx. It's nice when I find myself stuck somewhere with time to kill, but it's not an optimal way to read. You have to page down through the text quite often and the screen is only viewable from certain angles. Given the choice between a free ebook for my Palm or a printed book that costs money, I'd pay for the paper book in most cases. Paying less for an ebook isn't attractive either, if I'm paying money I'd rather have something physical. Most people I know (and I work in IT) will print something if it's going to take a while to read. Ink on paper is going to be the most popular UI for text for quite some time.
There's just something about a book. I'd much rather have a nice solid physical book than an ebook. Sure, it's nice to have text in electronic form, but for me books have a certain mystique (for lack of a better word).
Speaking of the USA PATRIOT Act, here's a quote from Rep. Ron Paul (R) on the act:
"It's my understanding the bill wasn't printed before the vote -- at least I couldn't get it. They played all kinds of games, kept the House in session all night, and it was a very complicated bill. Maybe a handful of staffers actually read it, but the bill definitely was not available to members before the vote."
Read this and you should be outraged enough to donate to the organizations that are fighting for your civil liberties and start corresponding with your elected offials.
Assuming that MacOS X was a viable option on x86, you're still forgetting that you're on slashdot. Suggesting that Linux isn't the way to go will get you nowhere here, my friend.
"He's about to lead me through the domains of his new realm, one that stretches across continents and oceans -- as soon as his publicist can get a solid connection to AOL on his laptop."
You're giving them good marks for not having their front page defaced? I'd much rather have a web page defaced than have an intruder on my network downloading my company's code.
And to accurately say that there is a God, you would have to see everything ine every dimension, all the time. First, you'd probably discover that there is no God, but if you didn't you'd discover that you were him. I'm glad you don't code (you'd believe your code worked without testing it...)
Those issues (God, spirit, etc)are a matter of perspective. But as a vegetarian and an athiest I'll agree with you that the ethical issues on this one are immense.
As far as whether it's a step forward or backward...Are We Not Men?
The question posed isn't "Why is the recording industry impeding my rights to fair use" but "What device can I purchase that makes it easy to exercise fair use". The industry can use whatever technologies they wish to prevent fair use, but if nobody buys devices that utilize such technology...

Please don't lump Minor Threat in with NYHC. Minor Threat had much less metal in them than the New York stuff that came later.
A network of interconnected ethernet switches is no different than an interconnected network of layer 3 or higher devices. Um...OK...
Either that or it's the deep-fried candy bars.

I thought it was JHVH1. Praise Bob!

I remember something like that, but it's been so long. It wasn't "href=http://freepeewee.tripod.com/"15 year old boys, was it?
and come on, who can resist Charles Bronson and Yul Brenner kicking Mexican ass?
Probably Mexicans...
It's still available at EDS's site.

Here's a good list of other things that aren't ironic.
Sounds like someone's been playing Paranoia.

That's funny, there's no mention of him here.
I'd rather have one of these: Spyderco SpydeRench
