I don't either. I've designed and studied keyboards over the years and the best way to type faster is to type more accurately. 30 words per minute accurately is much faster then 100 words per minute inaccurately
The best way to type faster is text-based PvP MUDs.:D
You forgot massive worldwide famines due to lack of food and overpopulation.
There was also supposed to be an ecosystem collapse with half of all species extinct by the year 2000.
HTH!
You know what? You own a house. Get out of here. If the rest of us were so lucky... Sell your house, and come live here. My rent is probably more than your mortgage.
Many times, it is not 'luck' that leads to financial success, but hard work and sacrifice.
We spend money on what we want and what we need. A few people want savings, so they "spend" some of their money on savings (to varying degrees).
Your scenario, while it works for you, is not doable for most. You started out with money. You even took a long unpaid vacation. You chose to take a huge salary cut. You own a house, and enough land for livestock. You're already ahead of the curve. Most people start out way, way, way behind the curve, and many never catch up.
I've noticed that a lot of people complain about having no savings, yet drive newer vehicles, eat out alot, have large apartments/homes, afford a full cable package, and buy a lot of gadgets. While I don't advocate living like a pauper on beans and ramens in a studio apartment, I do think it is possible for most people to scale back on their spending and build up some savings.
What a horrible analogy. Death isn't a dragon-tyrant, some evil forced upon humanity by a malicious will. It's an integral part of the cycle of life, and the only thing keeping the human race in even the remotest semblance of balance with the rest of the world. Sure, we should use stem cell and other technology to save the sick and terminally ill from a lifetime of pain and internment, but let's not throw wrenches into the gears of nature.
Why do you assume that eliminating biological aging will result in human immortality?
For 25-44 the death rate per 100,000 people is 177.8 according to the CDC, or.18% a year (roughly). Which means that the average 25-44 year old has a 99.8% chance of surviving each year. After 1000 years, there is only a 13.5% chance of survival (.998^1000). Average life expectancy would be 350 years. And this is assuming that the risk for cancer and other potentially fatal diseases won't increase with lifespan.
All things being equal, the elimination of biological aging (with all other factors being equal) would only result in longer lifespans, and not personal immortality.
Is there a chance the facial images have changed over the 1000-1500 years or whatever? I mean, obviously they wouldn't change much, but maybe a little?
Leonardo lived about five hundred years ago.
Unlikely (short answer).
The long answer is that across the globe facial expressions are remarkably consistent. You could pictures of Americans with different facial expressions, find some isolated tribe deep within Africa or New Guinea (assuming any are still isolated) and that tribe would be able to tell you emotions are being expressed in your photo. If facial expressions were learned, we would expect isolated tribes to be more inaccurate at guessing the expressions of distant foreigners. They are not.
In short, the facial expression attached to each emotion is nature, not nurture.
That's why Google hasn't opted to add Server-to-Server communication yet; if you're on their server, they can kick your ass off and ban you, but coming from other servers it's a lot more difficult to regulate (and I'm sure they've got someone working on it with their 20% free time).
Yet google has opted to add server-to-server communication to email. Why would google be quite good at avoiding spam on gmail, but be unable to deal with spam on jabber?
What on earth has he done that would make people respect his opinion on GUIs? That's like respecting Stephen Hawking's ideas on interior decorating because he's such a great physicist.
Silly person! Next you'll be telling me that I should respect a Hollywood actor's military analysis of the Iraq situation.;)
Woah, there! Easy now, fellah! We've already lost that one to Chimps, at the very least, who have been seen to actively seek out and kill Chimps that don't belong to their own group, going so far as, when finding a lone 'other,' to head back, round up a posse, and then go 'curb stomp' their 'ass.' Chimps will also kill babies of any female they meet that they have not had sex with. Hence Chimp promiscuity.
And dolphins also commit gang-rape.
We humans aren't so special after all.
So it's okay for us to do it because monkeys and dolphins do it? Is that where we look for behavioral guidelines? Maybe if we seek to behave like animals.
As a vegan (strict vegetarian), I've been told that people should eat meat because animals eat meat. Judging from how frequent that response is, there seems to be a lot of people who base their morality on animal actions.
Lets hope they never learn what a praying mantis female does during sex.;)
With clans and territory to hold, it almost sounds like a FPS/Risk hybrid.
That has some interesting possibilities. Have anyone be able to start a clan, have a decent alliance system, pre-arranged "duels" between clans, and it could be quite an addictive game.
I know you're joking, but many Europeans find it hilarious how those in the US who go on the most about bringing "freedom" to Iraq and Afghanistan are often amongst the leaders in wanting to limit freedom in America.
Lets see. Germany bans Scientology as a cult. France went after Yahoo for selling Nazi memorabilia on its English site. English had the McLibel case due to its free-speech unfriendly libel laws.
The US has its idiosyncrasies, but it isn't the only western nation that has them.
You should look up Galileo's interaction with the Jesuits (specifically the origin of comets). He could be a complete PITA, especially when he was quite sure of himself.
He also decided that the planets went in circulate orbits with epicenters. This resulted in a Copernican system that was no more accurate than the Ptolmic system.
Combine this with his caustic nature and his writings that could be construed as attacking the Pope, and it was no wonder that he was excommunicated in Italy during the middle ages.
"Heh, heh, heh, amazing. It's absolutely amazing. But under the right circumstances, a producer could make more money with a flop than he could with a hit... It's simply a matter of creative accounting. Let us assume, just for the moment, that you are a dishonest man."
why something like this only applies to games and not other forms of media. Why does 'Family Entertainment Protection Act' specifically target games when movies, books, and magazines can be just as 'harmful' to children.
Could you imagine the chaos that would come from not letting children go to R-rated movies? People might have to *gasp* HIRE A FREAKING SITTER before going to the latest bloodbath and/or sex romp movie flick.
Technically, face transplants are not medically necessary. The surgery would definitely make the person feel better, but it is not life-saving such as heart, liver, lung, or kidney transplants. The side effects of immunosuppresants are still quite severe and perhaps life-threatening, since the immune system is getting shut down for the life of the patient. The question is whether a doctor can allow someone to take these risks for a non-life-saving procedure
That is a good point, but I think that you are ignoring the social disadvantage of facial disfiguration.
Social disadvantages can result in poor job opportunities. It can also result in depression. Both low-paying jobs and social isolation influence physical health.
OTOH, I'm not sure why they didn't reconstruct her face with her own skin, but I didn't RTFA.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I distrust nuclear power because of things like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. No amount of anti-FUD on nuclear power beats the fact that simple mistakes can and do happen everywhere, and simple mistakes in nuclear power can result in millions of deaths. Nuclar power is only as safe as the humans who operate it. Frankly, that's way to dangerous.
Three Mile Island is estimated to kill exactly one person.
Wikipedia has one Chernobyl estimate with 4,000 predicted deaths.
This is a technology that produces over 15% of the total world's electrical power, and during its lifetime, the total amount of estimated deaths to civilians is less then 5,000.
That's a decent safety record for a technology that is proven to be able to compete with traditional energy generation, and does not rely on how hard the wind blows or the sun shines to provide power. If you ignore obsolete technologies such as Chernobyl, nuclear has an even better track record.
I don't see the Indian tribes apologizing to each other. Where I grew up (Minnesota), the Ojibway drove the Dakota out of the forest over a period of time, stealing their land.
Lets face it: Human history is pretty damn cruel. If you survived, you are probably decended from some pretty mean bastards. Perhaps your ancestors got the short end of the stick recently, but that doesn't mean that they gave others the short end of the stick before that.
That's exactly the kind of "qualification" that is irrelevant. Do you know the COM3 default base port on obsolete PCs (0x3E8, INT 4)? If not, you are an ignorant poseur who should go back to tending cattle in Elbonia.
In the end, this is mostly mental a mental exercise for the/. crowd. I doubt even 1% of us drive a truck, much less anything with more than 500lbs towing capacity.
How many trucks have a towing capacity of less then 500lbs?
I haven't looked it up, but I'd suspect that towing capacities would be around two or more tons for most trucks with a typical bumper hitch.
I've hauled cars around with a car dolly and a V6 truck. Hilly areas weren't fun, but it was a very controllable rig.
The police can often have little knowledge of white collar crime. In the western world, white collar crime has been known and perfected over a 500 years (credit and interest were long adopted in Christiandom, which facilitated these crimes, but not so much in Muslim countries where interest is often illegal)
Technically, in Christiandom, interest (usury) was considered a sin for quite a long time. Jewish law, OTOH, permitted charging interest on a loan to non-Jews. Thus moneylenders were often Jewish. This is one of the reasons for anti-Semitism during the Middle Ages. The debtors were Christians, the lenders were Jewish. (In addition, due to anti-Semitism, Jews often had unpopular jobs such as tax collectors.)
Have you ever considered the possibility that public transportation is much more popular in Europe due to the greater population density?
The population density of the UK is 8 times that of the US. On average, the UK mass transit system gets 8 times the potential travelers for the same amount of track.
Other than a few cities, finding a public mass transit system that runs on time is a rarity in most areas of the US. Intercity mass transit is better -- there is greyhound, which is mostly dependable -- but expensive and slow.
Currently, I'm considering a nice used motorcycle. It isn't mass transit, but it is fast, dependable, and relatively efficient on gas.
I once looked up the amount of pollution caused by the manufacture of a new vehicle. It has a significant environmental impact.
I once calculated the environmental impact of driving an old junker versus buying a new car, and driving the old junker for five more years ended up being ahead of the new car.
From what I've seen, any area on the political playing field will try to attack science if it hurts their sacred cows.
Bring up the cost/benefits of Kyoto, and most of the objections won't be from Republicans.
You forgot massive worldwide famines due to lack of food and overpopulation. There was also supposed to be an ecosystem collapse with half of all species extinct by the year 2000. HTH!
Just because I have a $1,000 in the bank doesn't mean I'm willing to spend $1,000 on a game system setup.
Many times, it is not 'luck' that leads to financial success, but hard work and sacrifice.

Just my $.02

He's pissed that he can't easily walk over federal privacy laws.

We are more open minded then that. Most of us have also tried slash'em once or twice. :)
I see you took the A+ certification exam. :)
