Don't know about you, but I personally don't ride a motorcycle simply because there are so many larger vehicles out there that would vaporize me without losing momentum. Same goes for some sort of plug-in motorcycle - there is simply NO WAY that can be as safe as a vehicle if, as you said, we'd still need larger vehicles around to go on trips or to carry around a group of people, as in a family. So basically you'd have big cars and little bikes... so in any accident one is coming out with a dent, the other is having its driver's limbs located.
Exactly the point here. And exactly what I say to people who rant on about Fox News being "biased."
For starters, the idea of unbiased news is absurd, as is the idea of unbiased speech in general. EVERYONE has a bias of some sort, including CNN and NBC and all other news orgs. Everyone in the world has views and opinions that affect how they see the world. This is why I have no problem in admitting that Fox may be right-wing biased, because there are plenty of other news sites out there with leftist agendas. So I don't think being "biased" is a bad thing, necessarily, and Fox News and other right-leaning sites provide a welcome alternative to most mainstream media. So please, instead of railing on Fox because it is a supposed "right-wing propoganda machine" as I've heard it called, be equally critical of every news source, in fact, every person you hear from, because everyone has an agenda of some sort. Then at least you won't join the ranks of those who attack one side or the other while pretending "their side" can do no wrong, cause it just isn't so.
Apparently every company out there thinks that this new pay-per-song system is going to work. I can't imagine why, because to me it is obvious that it never will. You're paying as much as you do for a CD and not even getting the real CD. Personally, part of the reason I ever buy a CD is so I can actually own it, both for the higher sound quality, and to have a physical album in my hand, complete with art, liner notes, etc. If I just wanted the sound file I'd get it for free or rip it from the CD. It's the same thing as eBooks, and for the same reason, they will never take off either. The music industry needs a massive overhaul, and iTunes and Napster just aren't doing it.
I couldn't agree more. Saying peer-to-peer is only for sharing illegal files, is like saying the Internet is for looking at pr0n. Just because something is the most popular activity doesn't mean it's the only one:-P
A "stealth introduction"? Doesn't Intel know about Slashdot? We geeks find out EVERYTHING, and as soon as one of us finds out and submits it to Slashdot, everyone knows. With media the way it is and Slashdot here, a quiet introduction is virtually impossible.
Actually playing on a network connected with multiple T1's. I think the problem is just my ping. I just have to find a server where I can get a low ping... all the ones I've been in I was over 300. Thanks, though!
After struggling for a long time to get into a server, I finally was able to get into a couple. However, the game played so poorly that I was unable to enjoy it at all. It looks like a pretty cool game from what I can tell. I like some of the new features. However, at this point at least, it is virtually unplayable for me. I have no wimpy system - a Pentium 4 1.7 GHz (I know, I know, AMD is better - but it's a Dell 8100), a GeForce 3 (w00t!) and 384 megs of PC800 RDRAM, running Windoze ME. So I would like to hear how people with lesser systems fared if I could hardly play at all. I'm sure the game will be better by the time it is released.
It is totally true that the first book is, for the most part, a simple children's book. However, as you read the rest of the series, the story becomes much more complex and is full of surprises and an unexpected amount of darkness. By the time you get to the fourth (which shouldn't take long - they are so well written that the pages just fly by) I GUARANTEE you will have a very different impression of the series, and you will be as excited for Books 5, 6, and 7 as I am! I agree that the fourth book is the first one worthy of an award. It is really on the level of much of adult fantasy/sci-fi. The series is extremely well-developed and flows smoothly between the four books. The characters get more and more complex as does the plot. You really cannot get a conception of this series unless you read the whole thing.
We must remember that the actual person that killed this child is the child himself. The school did not kill him by issuing this punishment. The parents did not kill him by not being hard enough on him. The media did not kill him by creating a frightening image of jail. The kid decided to take his own life, of his own choice. He alone decided to end his life. The sad thing is that he valued life so little, he ended it for something silly like this. The real crime is that he placed so little worth on his own life. Suicide is sad, and I definitely feel sorry for the family, but the kid did the killing. He made a very stupid mistake that he will regret eternally. He took his life and totally rebuked the gift given to him by his parents and the Creator, whatever you believe that may be. He is the one to blame for the suicide, even if other factors influenced him.
Maybe in the future someday they will come up with a brain controller. That would be cool, because you could just twitch your brain and hear "Miracle Water" booming in your head. Just think it and it's done. Or maybe I should just stop watching so much TV...
A version of the old Zelda has already been made for the PC. It features the original quest, and the original quest with a different graphic style. It even includes an editor to create your own quests! The site has many quests that were designed and uploaded using this. The port also has additional features added to the Zelda game. Go and check it out now at www.classicgaming.com/zeldaclassic, and I'm sure you can d/l it on FilePlanet (www.fileplanet.com). It is, I feel, a superior version that is actually made for PC!
I certainly hope the military plans to teach these guys how to aim. The guys on Star Trek miss ALL THE TIME and always get shot. The ever-expendable security staff on all four shows have a terrible time working those weapons, even the big-ass rifles. I hope we have better luck!
I am in the same situation as you - I will be attending college this fall, and I will be starting off with a computer engineering major. To be a comp. engineering major, I needed to apply to the engineering schools at my colleges of choice - to be a comp. science major, I think it is in the Arts and Sciences schools at most universities.
I personally found the engineering major much more interesting and valuable. My reason is this - as a comp. engineer, you learn about the low-level operations of a computer. This allows you to understand WHAT is going on, not just how to tell the computer how to do it. As a comp. science major, you learn theory and code, and this is great if you want to be a coder, but remember that languages constantly change. With rare exception, the basic operations vary little. I think it is more useful to be a comp. engineer. If anything, it will improve your hirability. That's hardly an issue for any computer-related major. A comp. engineer also gets a background in engineering, which can be useful in real-life. Good luck at whatever you choose!
Umm, the Jukebox you mentioned is over 150 dollars more than the NJB. While it has a better display, battery life, and navigation probably, unless you are a SERIOUS audiophile, the NBJ is fine. You can find one for under $400 and there's no tax or shipping at amazon.com. It is a fine device and provides most of the other jukebox's functionality, at a considerably lower price. Plus, the NJB has environmental audio effects, two line-outs, and other nice features. It is less of a machine, but for the lower cost, I think it is a much better choice.
Although you do have a point that all things in life are indeed temporary, you really can't say that a game and an interpersonal relationship are on the same level. A game can give you fun and even some social activity in the case of multiplayer. However, a relationship can give so much more - a real living person to talk to and spend time with. Last time I checked, games didn't have emotions. Games don't change and games don't care if you are near them. Games don't care if you abuse them, hack them, or enjoy them, but people do. Sure, both are easily taken away, but the rewards are much greater for real-life achievements. Game progress can also be destroyed easier - someone can simply press a delete button. Sure, someone can just press the trigger on a gun, but you have to admit, this is harder and less common.
This is very true. It shows how silly the people that work and work for these characters are. They spend insane amounts of time developing their characters, when something as simple as this can just throw it away. Maybe all of these obsessive players will learn a lesson (but probably not) - games are for fun. In the end, they are just GAMES. Hopefully, some of them can see that their work has led to nothing other than being victimized by some asshole hackers. Perhaps they should work on something more permanent, such as their relationships with friends and family, instead of playing a silly game 24/7. Look how easy it was thrown away.
This is LostScorp88. Thank you for your advice very much. I want to clarify one thing - the friends I have at school aren't really the kind of friends that I could really have a deep relationship with. They are just acquaintances that I talk to sometimes. One is the guy I ride to school with and talk to before homeroom, that's really it. The others I only see in class. My school is incredibly "clicky" and it is very hard to be a "non-clicker," if you catch my meaning. Please email me at lostscorp88@home.com so we can talk more personally. Have a nice day.
I am a senior in high school who has been introduced to slashdot just recently, via the show The Screen Savers on techtv (as many of the slashdot users may be familiar with). I read all the time about kids who are rejected for being geeks and who find fun and social interaction with the computer and the Internet. Unfortunately, my situation is not quite so bright - while I have used the computer for many years for games and Internet surfing, I have only recently been introduced to Linux and other such fields. I became so interested that my father has procured an old 166 mhz Pentium to try Linux on. I hope that this will allow me to see what everyone is raving about with Linux.
Anyway, my question is this. It seems that all the high schoolers (and the former high schoolers) have long histories with computers. Clinton, for example, has been using them (and learning all sorts of languages and stuff) since he was 8. Is there anyone like me out there? I have a huge identity problem - there is no one at my school that I could call a true friend (maybe one or two). I feel like I am SO behind the slashdot geek group that I can't identify with geeks. I want to call myself something!
I am a fairly average social reject. I spend more time on slashdot than I do with people at school (aside from in school, of course). I enjoy computer games a lot, yet I long to be part of a group and have friends like me. I listen to good music and detest pop. I really dislike popular people. I hope I can find someone out there who has similar sentiments - I feel so excluded even from the slashdotters. Please respond, preferably via email (remove the SPAM's from the address). Thank you in advance.
While the new keyboard types may be superior as far as comfort and health benefits go, they all have some very serious disadvantages. The two most obvious ones are:
Make up for any health or comfort advantages with very steep learning curve and lack of intuitiveness due to the fact we're all so used to QWERTY.
Not nearly used widely enough to be useful. Most people use a variety of different machines, and nearly everyone uses a computer that is not theirs often. Yours would be the only one that uses the special interface, meaning you would have to be truly used to both, severely decreasing your ability in both.
Clearly, while a new interface may be better for health and comfort, it is far outweighed by the difficulties associated. Maybe someday we'll all use better intefaces, but for the near future, QWERTY is so widely used that it would be difficult to use something so dramatically different.
What a funny thought - framerates increasing to rediculous amounts. Makes you wonder - what is the framerate of good old real existence? It must be pretty good, because the animations are so smooth. Never any strange movements or jumps. Must be somewhere in the tens of thousands or something. Come to think of it, real life has a damn good refresh rate too, and I never notice far-away objects not showing up or popping up when I approach. God must have a beast of a vid card, like a GeForce Infinity or something like that.
Anyway, wonder what games would be like at insanely high framerates. Imagine it - motions so smooth, they make real life look choppy and jerky. Human beings would look like nothing compared to the quadrillion-polygon, ultra-smooth models.

The Internet may not be so fast today, but it is getting better. There are surely improvements being made to the backbone. A while ago, a T1 was considered very fast. Now regular users can get faster speeds via DSL or cable. This new technology will someday be the norm just as T1 and T3 is today. And if it's cheaper, it's a great deal for a server, ISP, etc. You may not get more than a trickle in the firehose now, but it will be very useful when the tap becomes more powerful.
The Internet is the perfect medium for broadcasting a multi-tiered, large-scale event like the Olympics. It allows for a much more varied and complete picture of what the Olympics really are. With the Internet, a vast array of information can be accessed and used, giving the users much more in-depth coverage. It would be a personalized experience.
It must suck to be a foreigner living in America during the Olympics. The TV broadcasts are understandably America-centric. If said person could use the Internet, (s)he could get just as complete coverage for their own country, be it France, South Africa, Togo, whatever! As the Internet gets larger and more wide-spread, it is absolutely necessary to see its incredible benefits for broadcast. The Olympics are a great example of how the Internet's power could be used to allow everyone to come together and share a great experience. The Games are truly a beautiful thing, showcasing athletes from 199 countries, and America needs to see it for what it is.
I don't know whose idea this statement was, but they will be shooting themselves even 5 years from now. Just think how much things have changed in the last 5 years, and one can only imagine what it'll be like 5 years from now. Truly incredible! In ten years, things could be dramatically different. Some extremely short-sighted people made this decision, and I know they will suffer for it.
A major thing that makes this seems so fake is that he will supposedly pay for shipping. That would cost a lot more than 500 dollars, yet that was the initial value (ie, he may have been willing to settle for only that). Of course, he knew it would get much higher, but I think his willingness to dispose of the games as well as claims of mint condition really suggest that this is not totally legit.
I don't truly believe he would make the whole thing up with that much money at stake, but it does seem a little "wishy-washy," if you will. It will be very interesting to see how this turns out.
Don't know about you, but I personally don't ride a motorcycle simply because there are so many larger vehicles out there that would vaporize me without losing momentum.
