Try finding a lens that can resolve anything near that amount of resolution on a 35mm format sensor.

Current guesses suggest that 10MP is about the safelimit on DX sized sensors unless you use professional lenses and anything over 15MP would finish those off too.

35mm format sensors like the 16.7MP Canon has already require high quality lenses to resolve enough detail. 22MP would seem around the limit for those.

The mega pixel race is nearly finished as the lenses are becoming the limiting factor.

Raw image manipulation was the one thing that was making me consider running Windows (in vmware of course)and I haven't used a windows box in a looong time.

The software is extremely good. Anti-aliased fonts are missing (due to a mistake in production, it defaults to off with qt) but that will be addressed in the next update apparently. There are issues with printing that MIGHT be realated to "cups" but these are minor issue compared to the raw speed and qualty of what bibble produces.

There are open source alternatives which allow you to get by though. "dcraw" is one and the rawphoto plugin for the gimp. A new and promising one is also available here http://www.aei.mpg.de/~udif/ufraw/

There is another extremely promising though slightly buggy one here (this one allows applying D70 curves which is pretty cool) http://www.through-the-lens.net/index.php?page=5
However, this Bibble thing is by far the fastest and feature rich

My understanding, as a Brit who has been evacuated from many a building in his time and missed being blown up by 24 hours is this.

The Brits did appaling things in Ireland. They then stopped.

The Brits who settled, became Irish though protestant. Please remember that they are as Irish as the Americans are American (they have been in Ireland longer than the Aericans have been in America)

These portestants did applaing things to the native Catholics.

The catholics did appalling things to the Protestants.

The UK sent troops to sort it out. It didn't work and appaling things were done to both parties by both parties.

They are now trying to sort the mess out finally.

As far as I am aware the loyalist paramilitaries are equaly criminalised and always have been.

Most UK citizens would like to give NI back to the Irish. Most NI citizens would rather we didn't.

I'm not saying I'm right, I'm only saying that that is how it seems to me.

This is the only Gnome thing that makes me angry these days. Nearly all of the software projects mentioned have nothing to do with Gnome. They may have been Gnomified but they are GTK projects not Gnome projects and all the apps that I have been using for years are now considered Gnome apps by virtue of the fact that the Gnome team say they are. All the KDE apps that have been mentioned in this discussion have been written from scratch (twice actually). I have trouble seeing what Gnome actually is apart from a panel and an undelying technology.

  24. Re:RMS strikes again! on RMS Responds To Allchin's Comments · · Score: 1

My problem with this is that GNU claims ownership of other peoples' projects. RMS has always said his intention was to develop a GNU operating system and he started with the tools and would then develop the kernel (I find this unbelieveable, I mean, who wouldn't start with the kernel). He then, at least implies, that Linus simply wrote the kernel to the GNU operating system. By implication, RMS is the owner of the whole project and Linus is just the author of one part of it. This attitude continues today as well known projects such as the Gimp and Abiword suddenly and without warning are called small parts of another large GNU project.

As far as I'm aware, Linus wrote the operating system because he wanted a *nix at home. It is true he used the gnu tools to develop it but it seems the intention wasn't to write a kernel for the GNU operating system. Currently, GNU is a set of tools and until GNU finish a kernel, I think they stretch their point by insisting Linux be called GNU/Linux.

Put a sticker on the distribution - "Contains GNU tools" if you like. After all, there isn't all that much stuff in your average Linux distro that couldn't be replaced with a non-GNU version.

Having said this, RMS is an extraordinary individual and people should have respect for what he has achieved.
