I've been giving them out as gifts for about 5 years now. All of them are still running as far as I know. Takes me about 2 days to build a nice oak frame and casing for the system, and another day to assemble and test. I use LFS, each card has wireless, and an SMB share to upload pictures and music. I usually make about four or five a year.

Lighten up Francis. I was in the Air Force for 4 years and I didn't shoot, rape or pillage anyone either. There also wasn't a war going on. And if you were - as you claim - in the Navy for 6 years and didn't meet a single person who ever shot anyone then you probably should have crawled out of your bunk for more than a few minutes. I met quite a few Vietnam vets (I was in during the Carter/Reagan years) that killed people and more than a few with pillaged war trophies.

And if a modern twist on one of the oldest Marine jokes in the arsenal offends you "as humanly possible" then I, for one, and pretty damn glad you don't have your finger on the trigger any more because you sound like your too damn sensitive to pull it.

The issue is that using applications like Glider and extra-game behaviors like buying gold significantly and adversely affect the game-play and economics of the in-game economy for other subscribers, and to prevent those adverse effects, they have rules against them.

Blizzard's attempt to enforce these prohibitions using copyright may or may not be legally correct (IANAL), but it's far from "scary." It may not be copyright infringement, but you're definitely violating the terms and conditions when you load Glider and WoW at the same time. They have a right and an obligation to protect the rest of their subscribers.

This is an amazingly poor rebuttal. McDonald's ubiquity demonstrates that for the market it's targeting, it is indeed, the best restaurant. It makes no pretense of being a fine dining establishment. People have a choice and people make that choice every time they visit McDonald's. People go to McDonald's instead of, say, Wendy's, Taco Bell, or for that matter Charlie Trotter's. It's not like they don't know what they're getting into - they know EXACTLY what to expect from McDonald's and are probably pretty familiar with what they'd get from those other restaurants.

There are reasons for Microsoft's ubiquity. And after spending a week trying to talk a non-Unix co-worker through getting wireless and USB working on his Ubuntu desktop, it's pretty clear to me what those reasons are.

A configuration change that renders a start up script ineffective is a sign that your sysadmin hasn't been doing his job, and that you have no concept of change control in your environment.

We have systems that run for years at a time because we have change management tools that guarantee that those systems are in the exact state of configuration they should be in, and these tools run every night. If you're running around making undocumented configuration changes that even have a ghost of a chance of affecting server operation, anyone that gave you root access needs to have their fingers shortened.

Not to mention the inconsistency of interfaces across applications. The beauty of Linux is there are so many ways to do the same thing. The downfall of Linux desktops is there are too many ways to do the same thing. I manage nearly 1000 RHEL servers of various flavors and I have a RHEL5 desktop (and a Windows desktop). I use my Linux desktop daily - via ssh. Any application I try using in X I usually end up quitting in frustration and use the Windows equivalent because it's just easier.

The only time I ever use a Linux desktop is when an application like Oracle or Veritas forces me to. I hate Apple and don't like their desktop paradigm, but at least it's consistent. Nonsensically consistent, but consistent nonetheless. And XP Pro just works, and it works the same way every time.

Quotes like "Search has always been about people" show a fundamental ignorance of how most people over the age of 25 use search, and whatever accuracy it may contain is a damning indicator of the underachievement of those for whom it is true.

The FBI targeted a message board known to have been used by pedophiles to solicit child pornography. Second, they posted the links with a really nasty description of obviously illegal activities and participants. Third, they posted incorrect links just to see who clicked on them. Fourth, they post a SECOND set of links to see who had INTENT enough to follow through after seeing the error from the first click.

At this point - and again, I know I'm talking to the wrong crowd - any REASONABLE person can see that you've established some pretty serious intent to download child porn. Child-porn bulletin board, description of illegal activities accessible through an unpublished link, validation of intent through a reposted link... There's no way in hell you could "oops" your way into that one.

I still can't believe we have an entire generation of people being sold a bill of goods in this area. For the most part; that is, digital media your average person has access to or can use regularly, digital quality sucks. Over-compression, digital artifacts, unreliable transmission and reception - I could be talking about DirecTV or YouTube. /Google Video. DirecTV's "digital quality" should be a warning label, not something they should be advertising.

Sure, you can record all your MP3s in 256mb or greater quality to eliminate some artifacts, but to approach analog quality, you're gonna have to crank that up even further. But most of us don't have the bandwidth to download (let alone upload) equivalent quality videos. The satellite companies don't even have enough bandwidth to provide a watchable digital signal!

No thanks. I'll take my analog television for non HD-channels and DVDs for my movie watching any day of the week.
