  8. No Windows 7 SP2 Means Move to Windows 8 on Windows 7 Not Getting A Second Service Pack · · Score: 1

Microsoft can be so obvious when manipulating their customer base. No Windows 7 Service Pack 2 means Microsoft is warning you had better be moving to Windows 8. Microsoft doesn't want another repeat of Windows/XP. Personally I am very happy with Windows 7. My only complaint is the lack of 64-bit software developed for Windows 7. The ratio is still more than 2:1 in favor of 32-bit apps. This means that two out of every three apps are still running in 32-bit mode and not taking advantage of my Intel processor or Windows 7 OS. The reason is the cost to develop apps for 64-bit mode. It is rediculously expensive to purchase proprietary 64-bit development environments for Windows platforms.

  9. LG Optima V on Ask Slashdot: How Can I Protect My Android Devices From Hackers? · · Score: 1

Seems like there are a lot of generation-y's out there that are really full of themselves. "There are no stupid questions only stupid (or self-important) people with really dumb answers". First of all LG has promised the Optima V will support Gingerbread - which is Android Release 2.3.6. Contact LG and find out if the update is available, is compatible, and get instructions on how to upgrade your Optima V. "DON'T DO THE UPGRADE YET! If the free version of "Lookout", (you don't need the premium version), is compatible with Android Release 2.2.2 install it on your Optima V. After a successful install it will do a virus scan of all your apps and files. Let it finish the virus scan. You might have some viruses which should be eradicated or quarantined. Next run the Lookout Backup facility to backup your apps, contacts, and files. Now upgrade your Optima V Android to Gingerbread Release 2.3.6. This release is far more stable and may fix most of your problems. Your not done yet! Check your home WiFi router. How old is it? If it is more than two years old you may be experiencing some signal degradation. If it is a lot older than two years old it could be experiencing serious signal degradation. Find out what security protocols your WiFi supports. WPA2-PSK would be the highly recommended but if your WiFi router is well more than two years old you may have to settle for WPA. You can find out what security protocol your WiFi is using by installing WiFi Manager on your Optima V which will scan for all WiFi device signals within range. Know your SSID for your WiFi so you know which one to connect to. Use the Android 2.3.6 Settings Widget (app) and select Wireless and network settings. Then select Wi-Fi settings to choose your access point (Wireless Router). Make sure you choose your home WiFi router SSID. Once your connected under WiFi settings select the SSID you are connected to. You will get a pop up window with Status, Security, Signal Strength, Link Speed, and IP address. Lookout security will always be running. It always starts up on a boot up and does a full virus scan of your cell phone's ROM and SD Card (if applicable) and before loading your resident apps. Lookout will actively scan any app you install or file you download on your Optima V for viruses. You can recover your contacts and files from the Lookout Backup if they get wiped clean during the upgrade. Happy hunting!

  10. Head Protection is a Must! on To Encourage Biking, Lose the Helmets · · Score: 1

As a former skater, skateboarder, cyclist, and rock climber my position is that using helmets for head protection is a must. Even as a skateboarder, protective gloves, knee and elbow pads should always be worn. I also believe cyclists and ATV riders should wear special footwear, knee and shin guards, and protective garments. Even professional motorcyclists know the extreme benefits of wearing protective gear. There is absolutely no excuse for at least wearing head protection. The cranium and skull bones are not adequate protection for the brain and its membranes even when encountering mild impacts. Properly designed helmets can even protect accident victims from serious neck and cervical injuries. Please pursue any or all of the activities I have referred to in my comment. They are not only physically beneficial but also are psychologically beneficial. But please wear the proper protective equipment. You may be exceptional at any of these activities. But it only takes one careless moment or another careless individual to either permanently cripple you or end your life.

  13. COBOL - Common Business Oriented Lanaguage on Java Apps Have the Most Flaws, Cobol the Least · · Score: 1

COBOL has been around for fifty years. It was originally designed as a business programming language to replace IBM's Autocoder & RPG (Report Program Generator language), System 360/Assembler Language, and FORTRAN principally for business applications. Initially designed for batch processing it was quickly adapted for Online Transaction Processing by IBM for its CICS (Customer Information Control System) OLTP environment with CICS 360/Assembler macro level API support and shortly for the more popular CICS Command-Level Programming Interface. Although less efficient than IBM Assembler Language, also known as BAL (Basic Assembly Language), it provided a very favorable medium for developing and maintaining structured programming business solutions. COBOL continued to support numerous API languages including Assembler, FORTRAN, and PL/I. PL/I had been developed to provide an engineering language to replace FORTRAN. Today COBOL is strongly supported by IBM for business application program development with support for batch processing, OLTP, interfaces to IBM IMS DBMS, DB2 RDBMS, WebSphere, Peer-to-Peer and Message Queuing applications, and GUI interfaces and integration for Oracle's Database and Tuxedo OLTP. Online program development can be done with IBM's TSO/E and ISPF environments with fully supported run-time environments. IBM also offers a GUI Application Development Framework and Oracle offers support for COBOL in their Fusion Suite and ADF development tools. IBM COBOL now supports an Object Oriented Programming methodology and interfaces to the JAVA programming language. The only knock I have ever had with COBOL is that it can become extremely verbose. With the advent of structured and function programming constructs and GUI Application Development Frameworks this problem can be minimized while still providing very easily read, maintained, and debugged business applications.

HPC High Availability computing is a synergy of CISC/RISC chips combined with Application, Integrated Instruction, Facility, Graphic and Cryptography assisted processor technologies supplemented with Integrated Coupling facilities. These processors must share access to large amounts of fast Dynamic Random-Access Memory and be integrated into fast I/O bus architectures for a variety of High Performance connectivity with networking equipment, data storage, and other peripheral devices. All this hardware must work in concert with a variety of firmware, hyper-visors, and operating systems supporting telecommunications, storage management, databases, application run-time environments, application servers, web servers, online transaction servers, redundancy, security, applications, fail-over, backup, recovery, archival, and administration management. What is your true passion in life? A little Zen always helps. Know yourself. Know your interests. Know your passion for knowledge of those things you are truly interested in. I really don't care too much for Object Oriented Programming. I'll do it, but I am not passionate about it. I prefer structured function oriented languages. C++ doesn't really interest me and C language is a bit esoteric. However, Perl is pretty neat and Javascript is far easier to master than pure JAVA. The shell programming languages of UNIX and Linux are very powerful and easy to learn. If you learn korn shell, all the others, like POSIX, bourne, & bash, are easy to pick up. Knowing XHTML and CSS2 is helpful but learn HTML5 and really concentrate on CSS3. Knowing HTML5 and CSS3 with Javascript provide a powerful triad for getting hired as a web developer. You should learn an object oriented language to complement your Web Triad languages so you can access relational databases. The most popular and easiest Object Oriented Language to learn for the Web and relational databases is PHP. For relational databases you should know how to code SQL. SQL will gain you access to all the big relational databases like MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, and DB2. Once you have mastered these languages you may find it far easier to tackle developer environments like Ruby with Rails or JAVA with JDeveloper and JQuery. How do you get started? Get a copy of Notepad++. What really lights your fire. Find a topic and setup a web site for that topic using HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript using Notepad++. Put some muscle into it using PHP and an open source database like MySQL.You can find MySQL engines on the Web. Even Oracle supports MySQL. Once your rock'n & roll'n you can try your hand at an IDE. NetBeans is free from Oracle and supports XHTML, HTML5, CSS, PHP, SQL, Javascirpt, JAVA and API's for relational databases. To add some spice to your web site learn calligraphy and a good graphics design tool. Dreamweaver is very expensive, however, you can get a copy of GIMP or Inkscape for free. Well I hope I have given you some ideas. I am sure many other comments will have some great ideas as well. Good fortune and find your true passion in life. It will inspire you to do great things!
