  1. Re:The pull of a trusted brand on Will the iPod Ever Die? · · Score: 1

Also it is already a generic trade mark, so people will buy a "Sony" ipod or Philips one, yes it won't say that on these players but that is how they are referred to.

So as long as mp3 players are around ipods will be. And Apple will have a large share of that.
It will also be interesting to see if Apple can take the brand beyond being an mp3 player, so that when the next method of playing music comes along, ipod won't mean something old.
Walkmans in my head for instance still mean a cassette player.

I think wikipedia do a fairly good job on a balanced approach, ff you look at the talk pages on some of their articles, the main wiki population do seem to be reasonable and accept compromise (of course this NPOV is sometimes taken to its extremes - the talk page on the Santa Claus article has someone saying it's non NOPV because it states Santa is a myth!"

What would concern me is how frequent and up to date it could keep it's stories? I would imagine that it's contributers would be relying on other news sources for uptodate information, and even the that perosn might go to sleep for a while... what I mean is professinal journalists have their place - you are not goint to see a wiki correspondant from Baghdad (well maybe now, but when all pwoer is cut etc - wikinews will not be as insatnt as CNN ).

So on that vein, I would see such a project as a better anaylis tool then a breaking news one.

While people may make do with a slower computer, and you may wonder why someone who only surfs the web and reads email needs a 3 GHz computer, it doesn't really work that way.

It takes intel millions of dollars to make a fab to put out a chip, and that fab only makes those chips, so all that is available to the consumer is faster processors. How much would a new 486 sx 25 Mhz processor cost today. If you wanted one, how much? Intel don't make them anymore, so you'd have to fund some sort of production faciltiy, so that's a millions straight away.

The fact of the matter is that there are only fast processors available now. They may eat power and heat siberia but it's all there is (at a reasonable price for a desktop).

This is also a good thing though, the computing power is needed. Computers at the moment are kinda crap, you need to argue with them to use them, voice recogniton (good voice recognition) intelligent computers will need alot of power, and it's no harm at all to have an abunfdance of it available.

Well Dan Bricklin does point out that software of today can run on different hardware and having software tied to specific hardware is a bad idea.

He says that the system should stay fundamentaly the same and components can be replaced and upgraded, not having everything replaced completely every five years.

He is not just talking about one specific program that doesn't change, but rather open standards and techniques that mean data that is stored today, will be accessible in 200 years time.

I'd say this has been fairly achieved (It came across in the article that it hadn't been). I can't vouch personnally for 30 years ago, but i'd say the way we communicate with each other has changed alot since then - text messages, email, mobile phones are a different way of communicating then what it was.
