Compare him with other CEO's that inherited company's that were in far worse shape when becoming they became CEO's he seems fairly mediocre. Take Apple as an example, when Jobs came back in as CEO Apple the company was like 90 days from bankruptcy.
Seems like Ballmer is coming in and collecting a paycheck basically. Expects excellence from his people when he doesn't seem to want to put in the work, that's what it seems like anyway. What MS products can you point to that are disruptive? Zero as far as I know.
Yes that's the way I am understanding it as well, there may also be a loss in productivity; Basically the office staff is wasting too much time cruising the internet. We'll see if this is a better solution or not...
The teachers are ruled by unions. Do they work 40 hour weeks?
No.
And Twinkies.
You don't need unions to get fair treatment. The employees just need to get together and tell the boss if they don't get paid properly they're all quitting.
Are you a teacher? You've been watching too much fox news.
My ex-wife worked at least 60 hours a week and the crap that they have to put up with is not worth it.
It's the demonization of education by the far right that pushes these types of idea. Let's do away with the department of education blah, blah, blah. Just look at third world countries if you want to do away with education.
In fact if you want to do away with stuff starting looking at some third world countries, that will give you insight to what you want America to become.
Yup biggest POS ever. I thought something was wrong with the ui, desktop was horrid, not one bit intuitive to use. Not sure why ms couldn't have 2 versions like apple has for their desktop and for their portable devices. It's like watching really poor quality b/w video on a $5000 hd tv; the remotes broken as well. Lol
Fu*k all you pretentious assholes that think they speak for all technical savvy users.
I have been supporting Windows since Windows 3.11 Snowball so you can guess that I am one of the elderly folks on Slashdot. I get paid by a university to support applications used on Windows, OS X, and mobile devices. Guess what, I really like Windows 8.
Why are so many of you afraid of change? After spending a hole 5 minutes customizing the new 'Modern UI' Start screen, I can find the apps I want much faster and with less typing than I could with Win 7 style start menu. I have a huge number of shortcuts that I want old style access to so I add them as a toolbar on the task bar.
Why is that so hard? And don't spew any crap about MS making the choice for you. Apple changes their UI all the time without letting you change it back and they still don't get the flak that MS does.
I though it was us old folks that went around complaining about change and telling folks to 'get off my lawn'.
Jorg
WOW someone has anger issues, hope your not typing with one hand and stroking your gun with the other.
Yeah, Yeah I started using windows 1.0 when it was basically a crappy file manager for dos myself, some versions of windows have been better than others, windows nt 4.0, windows 98 sp2, windows xp, windows 7. I gotta say I installed windows 8.0 and was very disappointed; biggest POS I have ever seen. I think MS started believing the hype about what they should change instead of concentrating on their core business users. Hopefully 8.1 is better, but not super hopeful about that...
I gotta say I'm impressed with Windows 8.1 preview. It is by far the best OS there is. I'm happy that the start button is back and that they've improved Start Screen. The performance upgrades are fantastic. Everything runs so smoothly.
Windows 8.1 is by far the best Windows there is!
I can't tell if that comment is seething with sarcasm. Use a wink instead of a exclamation point next time if it is and if not, this was none too subtle, try not to use the Fox news approach to propaganda next time...
Sounds like repression of free speech using saying act of terrorism as an excuse. I'd get the ACLU involved and sue them for repression of free speech. Ironically isn't threatening these people like this an act of terror in itself.
I think the comparison between the Star Trek of Today and the Star Trek of yesteryear is vastly unfair. The world of today is very different. The original Star Trek was set in a time that was practically before manned spaceflight; The concepts of space travel as well as technology were new except to the select few original nerds and geeks that read sci-fi by the masters or followed comic books. If the original Star Trek did anything it was to try and bring these ideas of technology and space flight to the masses. Some of the ideas are rather anachronistic and taken from old westerns, don't get me wrong it's great stuff. It also dealt with some social issues of the day, which was pretty common back in the day for classic sci-fi.
Now everyone knows about technology and spaceflight nothing really wows anyone so it's really pointless to try and push that button; people are pretty jaded. Westerns are gone, for the most part anyway, and most of those concepts are long gone and if you tried to make a series with those concepts people would probably laugh and think it was kitsch. The awesome thing about the reboots is that it brings back to life for today's generation and it IS more of a space soap opera but that is what is popular today, like westerns were at the time of the original trek, and to bring people in you have to film something that is marketable and sell-able. If you want to see something classic like Star Trek, go watch the masters; the original crew, love those guys. I love the new crew as well, their just freaking awesome; I just realize that this is a different time and a different world. Besides I wouldn't want a line for line reboot anyway, I want to see something new.
My career is better than ever and I am over 40. Think our society just wants us older people to go away after a certain age.
I know a lot of people my age in my profession become PM's, what a sucky worthless job btw. I plan on programming until I drop dead. Just read this study. http://blogs.wsj.com/ideas-market/2013/04/30/older-software-developers-may-be-better-than-you-think/
BTW most of the thoughts about the decline in mental abilities after a certain age are also myths.
This doesn't take into account the time that the precursors to life may have floated about the universe not evolving or doing anything, could be billions of years. I suspect near the galactic core evolution took place a lot faster where stars are a lot closer etc. I suspect the answer to Fermi's paradox is the bell curve and we are out on the galactic arm and evolved much slower. Terra is basically an outlier on that curve, most of the other intelligent life forms have destroyed each other and are now extinct. I think we are the luck ones in that case.
Yeah Facebook is pretty bad. They basically own your data and decide how they handle it at their own discretion. Forget privacy or control. I work for a start-up in which we want to allow the users to control their data. We don't make money off your data, only off of giving other companies the privilege to use your data at your request, and then only for a period of time controlled by the user. Our target is to up integrate the internet instead of keeping all the users data hidden behind a wall and never letting the user have their data back when they leave a service. No shameless plug at this point for the start-up; just be careful of Facebook.
Yup it's stupid. Like most things now, it's only in place to collect revenue, not to enhance public safety, which I think might have been the vague intention of the law at some point. The police officers are pretty much only glorified tax collectors. Any real crimes they usually arrive after it's way too late for them to actually do anything.
Speeding tickets are useless and stupid. They are just another revenue stream for the government to randomly tax us on. They should just abolish all speeding tickets and only give tickets for reckless behavior; though to replace the revenue just issue random $100 dollar tax notices to people once a year, save me the pain of traffic school and the small talk with the officer. This study is insane though; soon they will give certain types of tickets based upon your profile for a crime they think you have probably committed; This is like the precogs in minority report. Though most of these tickets will probably be issued by a small law firm in Texas........
The people that are in denial of this are beyond the reach of reasoning. Either fear or political, religious factors are driving the inability to change these peoples point of view. It's been the hardest thing to realize that some people are irrational and will not change their points of view. This is the same reason that people bought houses that were too expensive, supposedly they didn't read the fine print or didn't bother to check if the payments made sense until their payments doubled or tippled and then it was too late. I suspect this is the same thing. There will be people who will be in denial and then there will be people who will need to take care of the situation while the first group of people act like children.

I think everyone should go to college. I am a self-taught programmer and regret everyday not finishing my education when I was younger and struggle going to college now in my life to create a more secure future for my family.
I do pretty well at my job and have been constantly employed but the no degree thing is always hanging over my head and even though I have had excellent jobs, there are jobs that I would of liked to have had but because of not having a college degree didn't have the opportunity.
College only creates more opportunities in a persons life. That being said, I know there are people with PhD's flipping burgers at McDonald's or working at really menial jobs that have college degrees, maybe they have no passion for what they studied or didn't do that well in what they studies, alas though college can't create common sense or the drive to succeed in life.
There is also a lot of brainwashing by councilors or society that the more expensive schools offer a better education; Studies have shown that starting salaries and the career paths end up being the same regardless of where people are educated.
Bottom line:
1. Go to college
2. Find the cheapest route for college
3. Be passionate about what you study.
My thought would be if they could use a similar method to test using a different particle and see if they get the same results, a neutrino(?) with a different energy (types) at the same site. I would like to isolate the variables in this case to see if we get the same results with the system or different. This would (could) tell us if there was an error in the system. Basically re-calibrating the system to check and see if we have errors, using a method that we know will give us consistent results at the speed of light.
