I just recently got the new Samsung I300 SmartPhone which runs the Palm OS. It is sweet!

It has a nice small form factor (for a Palm Device) and not much larger than your average phone. It has a color screen. Can do voice memos, which is a great feature! I can access the Internet, check email, and use it as an access device to my ISP for my PC using the data cable which is sold separately. It's fantastic!

I also like the functionality of having my contact list sync'd from my PC and being able to call directly from that. It keeps me organized and reminds me of things I have to do. It's everything I want in a personal communications/organizer device. It's so nice to finally have a Palm device and phone in one small package. Oh, and btw, it looks really cool!

Back when I first got DSL and downloaded my first .iso images I wondered myself how the companies that centered their business model around the compilation of a Linux distribution and the distributing of that distribution would make it in the "future" where bandwidth would be available in larger quantities and CD burners would be ubiquitous.

Certainly we should all support our favorite distribution by purchasing a packaged product once in awhile. This isn't too hard when most are priced between $30 and $50 dollars.

However, I do not see how these companies can continue to survive much longer without venturing into different product areas as Red Hat has done. I really don't think their revenue streams can support them for much longer. Suse has had troubles recently for some of the same reasons (IMHO).

The government too often focuses on the wrong part of the issue. It's so easy to ban and regulate objects instead of banning or regulating behavior, or changing behavior, if you like.

The root problem of the issue is always people. All of the inamimate objects are useless without the people to make use of them. Guns don't shoot themselves. Dynamite doesn't blow itself up. Planes don't fly themselves. People do!

  14. Re:Star Trek is about Superheros... on Star Trek: Enterprise Premieres Tonight · · Score: 5, Insightful

Nice idea, but I always thought that Star Trek (the entire franchise) in all of it's incarnations, was about teamwork . It's always been about people coming together to get the job done. Regardless of color, creed, religion, etc. This is what I always loved about it. The super hero's you speak of were all flawed in some way and could not get the job done without the entire team. Everyone contributed.

Spock (my personal favorite) had superior strength and intellect, but at times he was too logical. This was his "achilles heel". Data, was much the same.

Capt.'s Kirk, Picard, and Janeway (pardon me forgetting the DS9 captain's name...didn't really watch it) were the leaders that pulled together the strengths of the team to get the job done, often in the most harrowing of circumstances.

So, I think you are right about the hero part, just not the super hero part. All of the characters were hero's in their own way. They all braved the "unknown" and faced their worst fears.

    This is heroism.

We as citizens of the world need to send a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Not only in the United States but in every country. We Americans take a lot for granted, but once something like this happens in our own backyard, it becomes personal and you can be certain we will bring all of our resources to bear in punishing those responsible.

Please continue to support us as we go forward. We will prevail and come out even stronger. Rather than tear us apart, this has only steeled us and made us more resolute in the course of action we all know we need to take.

    Thank you!

  24. Wow! on James Martin Predicts The Future · · Score: 2

To be so into technology, you people sound like a bunch of Luddites! Lets just go ahead and trash all forms of technology and go back to rubbing sticks together for fire.

Whatever happened to hope? It seems that after all of this dot com bullshit everyone is so down on the Internet and computing lately. It's as though everyone is jumping on the anti-technology bandwagon just as five years ago we all thought this huge paradigm shift was occurring, the economy was on an upturn that would last for twenty years and now that we have a hit a little bump in the road, we're all going to hell in a hand basket!

This is just a temporary setback. Call it a Recession if you want. It will pass soon enough and we'll begin moving upward again. This is merely a correction that had to take place. Waaaay too much money was being thrown at ideas that were just that, ideas! They had no substance to back them up. So much of the economy, especially the stock market is affected by emotion. If you look at the market since its inception, it has been on a steady upward trend. Sure we had the Great Depression and the recession back in the 80's, but in general, it continues to move upward.

From the article: "What's extraordinarily frustrating to me is that almost no one is thinking of these possibilities," he says. "When people think about the future and the Internet, what they usually trot out is that example of 'the refrigerator that orders milk for you when you've run out.' " Such scenarios are trivial,..."

This often frustrates me as well. People are quick to decry computing saying it won't "save the world". I seem to remember a article on Slashdot awhile back saying this as well as trying to tell us what computers can't do. How idiotic! There are so many technologies in existance right now that 10 years ago we never would have thought possible. Even more so 40 years ago when the first computers were filling entire floors of a building and now we have much more powerful computers that fit in our pockets...hell! on our wrists even!!

I work in the technology field because it never ceases to fascinate me. Perhaps many of us take so many things around us for granted that we fail to see the enormous wonder in what is now a simple microchip. I'll probably never be a Vint Cerf, Linus Torvalds, or a Tim Berners-Lee, but I feel truly fortunate just to be along for the ride. Who would have ever dreamed that we could send not only one frequency of light down a fiber smaller in diameter than a human hair at OC-192 speeds and faster, much less use DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) to send multiple frequencies of light and make even more use of the existing technology! We not only underestimate computers and technology in general, we underestimate ourselves! This mistake has been made before when the U.S. Patent Office once released a statement back in the 1920's (I believe) saying that anything that could ever be invented already had been. There was nothing else to invent! Nothing else to discover! How short-sighted!

Who cares if James Martins' prophecies don't come true exactly as he says. He seems to be one of the few with documented proof that more than 20 years ago he made far more than just a few ruminations about what the future held and was dead on with a lot of them. Give the guy a break. Also, give technology and humanity a break.
