Most developers are TERRIBLE sysadmins. I've seen the havoc that a typical developer who thinks he knows UNIX can do to a system. A lot of developers think that they're better than sysadmins and that sysadmin is "easy." They couldn't be more wrong.
If he was anything like most geeks he'd get a pizza or go to McDonalds. Let's be realistic. I don't eat anywhere that doesn't a) deliver or b) have a "drive-thru".
I installed Windows.NET Server RC1 the other day and have done many Windows 2000 installs and none of those have ever had any problems.
It seems like Windows people like to make the installation of Linux seem harder than it really is and Linux people like to make the installation of Windows harder than it really is.
I'm a Solaris guy so both of those are cake to me.
I worked at an ISP that provided broadband access plus e-mail and web hosting and so on. We had a server specifically set up for the spammer customers. Rather than getting rid of the spammers, that company charged them WAY more than a normal customer and let them loose on the high volume SMTP server.
I was always under the impression that the top level (.) servers resided at Verisign/Network Solutions. Currently running on RS/6000 systems as I remember the news about the switch from Sun systems and "We put the dot in dot com" suddenly being incorrect.

This discussion has rekindled my interest in producing my own electronic music. I was waiting until I had some cash to pick up an MPC2000 and some other equipment but I have noticed that several artists produce their music strictly on computers.
I've noticed HP-UX is especially common in corporate type environments, as is AIX. I have worked at or know of several very large companies using these operating systems. I'm a Sun guy though.

I do a lot of that stuff now, as well as a bunch of crazy stuff not on that list. I believe in making my own fun at the expense of fast food employees and my co-workers.
There are already a lot of 'sploitz in PHP carts and forums and so on, as well as perl based ones, asp based, etc. etc. There are even CGI scanners for the kiddiez to find them. If someone used the functionality of those CGI scanners for a worm, what you're proposing would be simple. I'm suprised it hasn't happened yet. There is the sadmind worm on Sun though.
"Under its new operating model, which focuses its SourceForge application software business, VA Linux said it expects revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2002 to fall within a $3 million to $4 million range, excluding August hardware shipments. Also expected during the first quarter is a net loss from operations of $10 million to $13 million, the company said."
So instead of selling a tangible product, they're a dot.com. What the hell? Isn't this 2001? Aren't dot.coms dead?

I'm glad I don't work there anymore.
It's called nostalgia...

I'd like to see you hide an E10k in the ceiling.
It would sell around here, or so it seems, if it had a multi-colored face plate or a picture of hello kitty and a million flashing lights all over it.

What tools are used to do this?
When are these things going to work in Canada? I know TiVo doesn't work here yet, but I'd love to have one.

64-bit computers are mainstream and have been for years. Think UltraSPARC, Alpha, RS/6000 PPC.
HP-UX may be a lesser operating system but it is far more common than Tru64. Tru64 is far faster though.
VA Linux and Slashdot, or Exodus?

Did you expect a system that scales to 106 900MHz UltraSPARC III Copper processors to be CHEAP?

What I can't believe is how many people didn't apply the patch that protected against Code Red. It was out for SIX MONTHS before Code Red hit!
IT WAS A JOKE! Nader protects consumers. If Nader was in, MS would be toast. That was the point.
"Next week it becomes Libertarian Party Headquarters. I just hope they have more success than I had."
People don't seem to want to do things on their own and be responsible for themselves. They want to be babysat. It makes me sick.
I didn't ACTUALLY vote for him. That wasn't the point, it was a joke. The point was, the GOP are the bitches of big business.
I think MS would be in a far different postion if someone with some consumer-protecting cajones was voted in.
Why bother signing a story that's mostly fabricated anyways? The odds are that changes to it would make it more accurate rather than less accurate.
