You know what happens when you assume. Personally I'm still fine with my Sony Wega standard definition TV, it works fine for games and movies and I'm not running out to spend $600 on a new TV when the old one still works.
I just wanted to post one more thing, the OP seems incredibly one sided and presents no evidence. Without seeing the entire support ticket, including your host's responses, how are we supposed to know what really happened?
It's not your server, you don't have ANY expectation of privacy. While I don't go snooping around people's data (got better things to do) sometimes you just HAVE to look at the source code or the database tables to track down the problem. Support may have been off track but it doesn't sound like they did anything wrong.
I assume you're a reseller on a cPanel server or a Plesk box, you could easily upgrade to a VPS if you wanted full control of the environment. You also need to stop overreacting, if the data is THAT sensitive why are you storing it on somebody else's server in an unencrypted format?
It's probably the fact that cPanel's support for postgres sucks, it only supports 7.4 and getting it to work right is a pain. Plesk is a bit better but you have to pay for extra licensing to use it.
Why does it have to be Google, couldn't some other company start their own auction site? There's even open source scripts to start your own, not sure how they would scale with millions of hits though.
Actually I've never done that, but I tend to make sure I have everything before leaving. It takes like 30 seconds to go down the list. Keys, id card, lunch, laptop.
I can't imaging riding a single gear to work. I rode to work the other day (35 miles round trip) and the hills would be impossible if I couldn't shift down. I plan on riding to work at least once a week, it doesn't really save me much money but the health benefits are worth it and it's nice to just get out and see the country side.
Red Hat hasn't provided a CONSUMER desktop release but they do have a workstation option available in the installer. Besides, nobody cares about consumers, RHEL is the standard where it matters, the enterprise and server realms.
Perl is a great language for web apps but my personal preference is python. One of the biggest assets in perl is CPAN and I haven't see any other language match that, sure there's the python cheese shop and PEAR but they're not the same in sheer size. There's also a few very high traffic sites I know of that use perl, Fark and Slashdot for example.
Perl with Mason is almost just like coding in PHP, you can embed perl objects wherever you want and build templates for them.
To quote one of my former coworkers, we use Comodo, like the dragon. Their prices are decent and every time I've dealt with their support they've been responsive and helpful.
Sorry but my time isn't free. I don't see anything wrong with putting in your 8 hours and leaving, sometimes I stay 9 or 10 hours depending on what needs to be done but once I'm out the door work stops.
Not everybody that uses OSS software is a developer. I'm a system admin and I've done my fair share of shell scripting, PHP and Python but I still can't write every application that I need from scratch. If MySQL had something like Enterprise Studio it would be really nice, phpMyAdmin is ok but it's missing some things.
They've also got this neat feature called RSS, where you can subscribe to stuff that you actually want.
Forwarded articles should go to the trash any way, if I wanted to read it I'd go to the site.

If TV has taught me anything you can go to Panama and escape from prison again.
Seriously though, I'd consider going to Cuba, they will accept U.S. dollars and I'm sure Castro isn't gonna give anybody with cash back.

DHCP and DNS services aren't default components and you have to start them up after they're installed manually any way.
Even the undead aren't all that bad, we're fighting against the scourge.

What business model? I still can't see how they manage to pay their bills.

Undocumented code eh? Better send it back to Mexico.
How about a backhoe?
He said "high quality", MP3 is not. Personally I'd rather just buy the CD and rip it to whatever format I want.

If you need that get Windows Server 2003. I run it on my desktop and it works great, it's also very stable.

There's always an option, MOVE. If you don't want to move then you have to accept the drawbacks that come with a rural setting.

Actually that would be considered tax evasion and no legitimate business is going to get involved in that.

Why the hell would you destroy RAM? Hard drives I can understand but any data in RAM is going to be gone after a few seconds of power being off.
