when listening to music on my external speakers the sounds from the website get kind of annoying, and I don't want to keep adjusting the volume of my music.

  3. Flash... on Alien Case Mod · · Score: 5, Insightful

you know, unlike a lot of other people on slashdot i don't usually mind flash, but when it's used just to display a bunch of images and they use lame sound effects with no option to turn them off it just pisses me off.

Sucks when you've got music coming from your computer in a room full of people :-/

anyone else think casemods are just a bit lame or am I just feeling particularly negative today?

  7. Apple Mail... on Anti-Spam Software for Mom? · · Score: 1
The OS X mail client has a built in spam filter. From apple's website (page here):
It comes with sophisticated built-in junk mail filtering that uses adaptive latent semantic analysis to identify and nail junk mail messages and simple controls you need to train it to agree with your view of what's junk and what's not -- like the Junk button in the Toolbar that lets you so label any messages you choose, and the Not Junk override that appears on any message either you or the built-in filter labeled. When you're satisfied that you and the filter are on the same page, checking the Automatic option sends everything the filter identifies straight to a junk mail folder which you can set to empty automatically either daily, weekly, monthly or whenever you quit Mail.

    works well for me.

have a look at openCV (stands for open computer vision), it was originally developed by intel, but was later open souced. runs on both linux and windows and is mainly used for real time motion tracking of live video sources. i'm sure there are some pretty nice algorithms in the source there somewhere. They have their stuff on sourceforge

and a yahoo groups support forum thing here

  20. go on What Games are You Addicted To? · · Score: 2, Interesting

although i have spent extended periods of time being addicted to computer games (doom and Quake 3 particularly), my recent addiction is the game 'go'
played in high resolution real 3d space (with little black and white counters on a grid board). This game is utterly addictive and one of the interesting things about it is that, although it follows a very simple set of rules, no program has ever been created that could beat a vaguely good go player. (unlike chess :-)

Not that there hasn't been any incentive either, a Taiwanese businessman wagered $1,000,000 that noone could build a go program that could beat a professional go player.

I suggest not trying this game, as it is far too addictive :-)

  21. samba/dave on Samba Under OS X? · · Score: 1

I used to use DAVE when I was running OS9 and although it was extremely flaky, would often bring the machine down and was quite slow, It did provide two-way access to a windows network. You could mount windows shares as well as showing up in the network neighbourhood. Now I am using OSX I installed Samba and there is no way I would want to go back to DAVE, Samba is (Much) faster, completely stable, and extremely customizable, particularly when it comes to user permissions. When I want to mount a windows share, I use sharity, as smbmount is not available for darwin.
