Chris, you realize that just riffling through the pages and looking for pictures doesn't constitute "reading" the book... right?
In much the same way that "writing" the book wasn't done by her sitting at a keyboard and simply slamming her opened hands against the keyboard for 5 hours.
How quaint... Some people think she actually wrote this book? Seriously? P.T. Barnum was right...
But it's the PR perception that Amazon is encouraging folks to buy all the bomb making materials a terrorist needs in one go that they are trying to avoid. That the algorithm works and apparently creates more sales and more happy customers is not the issue.
Personally, I wonder if someday we won't realize that Amazon has subliminally pried it's way into having a virtual retail monopoly for literally EVERYTHING sold and has made it so impossible for the competition that we will pay dearly for everything we need/want. This "others have purchased" list is just another way to grab your money, regardless of what you are building.
For now, Amazon needs to keep itself squeaky clean in a PR way.
No doubt.. However, I'd like to point out that Mr. Ford knew the limits of his knowledge, which by all accounts is an exceedingly rare thing. Most are prone to believe ourselves to be experts in nearly anything and will argue to the death we are right without the benefits of facts or skill relating to the topic at hand.
Unlike Mr. Ford, Musk is making confident assertions, in public, about subjects he doesn't seem qualified to make. Maybe he is, likely he isn't, I just know I'm not an expert in the field...
And I'm not in a position to claim enough expertise to debate with Musk and Hawking on much. Certainly not AI, which I've had some professional experience, but only have enough knowledge to be dangerous...I'm not disagreeing that his warnings may be a bit much, but I have no grounds to engage him in debate.
Generally, though, my point here is that Musk is just doing this for attention seeking reasons (Hawking is too, but that's a different story). Musk doesn't personally know much about AI, batteries, Electric Vehicles or even space flight for that matter, but he does know how to leverage what little he knows and some past success at earning money into some really wiz bang presentations to wow investors and draw positive attention to himself. Think of him as a pied-piper with an inferiority complex who has learned how to get positive attention while milking investors for a lot of cash. These pronouncements about AI being dangerous are just one way he does this.
The guy seriously doesn't have a fucking clue about AI. I've been studying the field for over 15 years and I've barely scratched the surface. Elon hasn't done shit with AI and can't speak from any experience.
Experience or no aside... Musk is often misunderstood by both his detractors and supporters.
His real motives are about getting approval from others, and he's a bright guy so he has come up with some well paying ways to get approval. His whole AI thing is about his innate need for approval but it isn't like he's alone in his views.
Some really bright folks share his concerns (Steven Hawking has said similar things) so I'd not be so quick to just dismiss Musk. Where I understand your prospective (because I share the idea that AI isn't all that advanced yet), I'm not willing to call BS on the likes lf Musk and Hawking without some seriously good arguments..
Maybe they are right but For the wrong reasons. Amazon isn't looking for a distribution center to ship from, but a place to house 50K employees that work behind the distribution centers, websites and such. They are looking for a place where they can attract and keep good technical and management talent, not people to pack boxes... So Denver is likely in the running, but will suffer from being an expensive place to live (and thus an expensive place to find and keep employees). I'm guessing they will end up someplace else...
SS7 ISUP, yes, is very old. Other parts of SS7 are not so old. In fact, SS7 allows you to extend it to do custom things and pass vendor specific data in proprietary formats, and many vendors have done this. Some SS7 extensions fell into common use, others didn't. But SS7 has been changing a lot over the last few decades as voice and data services have evolved and many proprietary extensions have become commonly used.
Most of this advancement though has pretty much ended at this point. These days the whole industry is sliding into VOIP services and the signaling protocols that supports it. SS7 is still commonly used where the POTS network meets a VOIP carrier but that use is obviously not ideal and SS7 is thus dying out, slowly.
Surplus Xbox 360 controllers are getting pretty cheap these days....
Of course, you know the ruggedized military version will cost 4 figures each and half will end up broken in the TV lounge by sailors playing 688 Attack Sub on the Xbox 360.
Maybe this will make people stop being so dependent on debt. Then perhaps the price of things will go down since no one will finance them any longer. Then maybe we'll see the banksters starving in the gutter.
You do realize that credit reporting is done for more life events than those related to debt right?
You want a cell phone and don't use a prepaid one? Likely a credit check and monthly reports about your account...
You open an account with the local electric company? Credit check, and likely ongoing reports..
Open a checking or savings account? Brokerage account? 401k/IRA?
You simply are NOT going to get away with not having your data show up at one of the big three unless you live a very unconventional life, only accept or spend cash and never do any one of the things we usually take for granted in today's world.
No, I'm not currently working as an Electrical Engineer... But I have used my Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering as a electronics engineer in the past.
We are at a impasse.. You won't agree to a common view of thermodynamics that I feel is fundamental and beyond debate, so we have no common ground to debate with. In my view you have already disqualified yourself as knowing anything about the topic being discussed, yet you make confident assertions of same which are simply wrong.
So, as it says in Proverbs.. "Answer not a fool according to his folly"
What makes you think you are doing to avoid the TSA taking the hyperloop train?
The only reason the TSA isn't patting down passengers on trains or searching your baggage is they are not big targets. If the hyperloop thing gets popular enough, they (the TSA) will show up and slow the process down..
Thermodynamics has application in ALL cases where energy is transferred or transformed
No it has not. Reads the damn wiki article.
Thermodynamics applies to all transfers of energy, which includes electrical power, batteries and heat just to name a few. Until we agree on that, I'm not going further with you because these concepts are fundamental.
Thermodynamic laws you must understand the implications of are:
Energy can not be created or destroyed (Conservation of energy).
Transferring energy from one place to another and/or one form to another (i.e. doing work) increases Entropy.
I go no further with you until we can agree on these fundamental laws of physics.
Anybody who's taking a course in thermodynamics sees the folly in that statement. Thermodynamics has application in ALL cases where energy is transferred or transformed, this means heat, electricity, chemical reactions, and/or potential and kinetic energy even. Just because they teach thermodynamics using heat engines does not mean it only applies to heat engines. The rules are general and discuss energy in all forms, not just a form of energy known as heat. You are gravely mistaken.
You are wrong on your FIRST point... I rest my case because the foundation of your argument is patently incorrect, and thus your conclusions are too.
Next you are going to tell me perpetual motion machines exist.... Because you found some snake oil sales man on Google that says so..
I'm not saying there isn't one, I'm just interested in why this is a problem. I've seen at least two news stories about this now and neither of them have any information about what the alarm is really about.
One could argue that probation was caused by women's suffrage when you look back in history, however I'm not sure it is totally fair to blame them for it..
Personally, I think the general idea of letting women vote was and is a good one... Ranks right up there with letting all citizens vote, instead of just property owners.
But again, I'm an old white guy who by definition cannot be in a victim class so who the heck cares what I think on this subject...
Discrimination based on gender is illegal and has been for decades. Ladies, if you are in a situation where the law is being violated and you are the victim, I strongly recommend that you do something about it. PLEASE. The only way we can make this kind of discrimination history is to challenge it everywhere it is found using the tools you have. If you need to sue, do it!
By the way... I'm the old white guy sitting in the cube next to yours, doing the same work as you and I dislike unfairness too. I think that most (though not all) of the people who are like me (white and male) would feel the same way and would support your quest for fair treatment.
There is more than a little bit of truth in the original post. Of course, being a older white male, there is zero chance that I can attain enough standing in this debate to have my opinion count.
Seriuosly. This is why you don't hire women. You're just asking for trouble, once they get in and get established. They automatically think they should be running the place.
Stand by to get sued either way then because you are still breaking the law.... It might just be better to hire women and pay them appropriately... I think it will be easier for you, but it usually is easier to comply with the law...
Chris, you realize that just riffling through the pages and looking for pictures doesn't constitute "reading" the book... right?

This is Apple, you WILL take the update!

Surely Musk has access to informed experts?
No doubt.. However, I'd like to point out that Mr. Ford knew the limits of his knowledge, which by all accounts is an exceedingly rare thing. We all lost during the primaries, regardless of who you voted for.... Maybe before that.
By all means move.... Enjoy living in the third world...

LOL... Well, give it a go if you like, it's a free country, just don't expect me to support the effort..
You must be young.... Those bran muffins look pretty tempting at my age...
Exactly... What is the health issue here?
I'm not saying there isn't one, I'm just interested in why this is a problem. I've seen at least two news stories about this now and neither of them have any information about what the alarm is really about.
Your digestive system does, though.
Serious question.. How? What about small plastic fibers is a problem as they go though my digestive tract?
