  1. Now let's generalize it, shall we? on When Bugs Aren't Allowed · · Score: 1

"Quality" as ambiguous. What I consider "quality" is different from what you consider "quality".

It's not just three, either; it is ALL of the non-functional requirements. At most two of them can be fully optimized in any engineererd system. In practice, the design of a system will be governed by the relative priorities of the non-functional requirements.

The set of non-functional requirements is very large, but you should recognize some of these:

    • Cost
    • Schedule
    • Documentation
    • Internationalization/Localization
    • Fault Tolerance
    • Maintainability
    • Scalability
    • Expandability
    • Extensibility
    • Durability
    • Availability
    • Manageability
    • Recoverability

Mental exercise: Choose any two from the above list, then explore how choosing any other item from the list would require a compromise to either of the first two chosen.

So, what "ability"s do you want to have today? ;)

One of those statements in the list (A system tends to oppose it's own purpose) seems to be a re-wording of Le Chatelier's Principle, who died in the 1930's. Who violated who's copyright? Rewording does not violate a copyright.

  8. Re:Why not? on Extending Pop Music Copyrights · · Score: 1
Bach and Mozart produced far more music and worked far harder then the Beatles ever did, for basically nothing by todays standards. Yes, but compared against the standards of 2,000 years ago, they lived much more comfortably. Are you saying we should base contemporary laws on arbitrary standards of the past?

Sure, since we are talking about arbitrary periods of the past (try 200-300 years) and examples of the extremes (Bach had an incredible sponsor; Mozart died very young and very poor).

For that matter, care to explain how copyright affected Bach and Mozart? I believe they got no benefit from it at all, and society has benefited tremendously as a result. In fact, had copyright been in place in Bach's time I suspect he would have produced far far less than he did. Mozart didn't live long enough to garner any real benefit.

True, although said offending U.S. citizen would have to be careful not to travel to U.K. jurisdiction for the rest of his or her life. Like how the DeBeers execs do not dare step on U.S. soil because of their racketeering convictions.

This is about a corporation, not an individual. This is particularly unnerving for multi-national corporations who do have a presence in multiple countries. Just ask Yahoo about French senstivities! What one branch of a corporation does in one country could have serious consequences in another national jurisdiction. This is most pertinent to journalism since the reporting of opinions and facts are certain to offend someone somewhere.

On the up side, this may help clean up some of the dirty and sloppy reporting behaviors we have seen lately. On the down side, it may result in corporations enforcing censorship far stricter than the law would -- even could -- allow. That's how to subvert freedom of the press: fear.

I made just such a CD for myself nearly 3 years ago so that I could have cygwin (particularly SSH), emacs, CVS, Java, and Mozilla with me wherever I happened to be, such as in the classroom. The fun part was getting the autorun feature to properly set up the paths. I also made use of the TMP variable as the directory where I could write to the local disk when needed. I suppose what I really should do is establish a RAM disk.

I have recently even been considering migrating to a DVD so I can install the full cygwin installation along with Firefox and plugins; music and video players and rippers; some USB device drivers for my camera, MP3 players, voice recorder, and smart media scanner; and if I can figure it out also the synchronization software for my phone and PDA so I am not tied to a single machine!

I suppose you could add games, too., as if I had time for such things. Hm... the CD emulator with the CD images... I could perhaps include a few of my favorite classics!
