I recently realised that in the states "video/dvd renting vending machines" aren't the big thing. I just don't understand why.
In Spain, France, Italy... most of Europe really... you find these cool little machines, about twice the size of a coke vending machine, where you can rent over 500 vhs or dvds any time of the day. Most of them don't require a membership card (which a f'ing annoying anyway), just a credit card. If you return the video within a few hours you pay much less. If you don't return it, they just charge your credit card. Simple and fair. No hazzle.
But yeah... why aren't these machines the bomb in the States, where vending machines are so normal? Any thoughts?
I don't want to troll, but even setting (in IE, mind you) the text size to "largest", I can still hardly read the links. For the love of Christ, red text on blue background? Argh!
Maybe the first show (the pilot) is free and each show afterwards is some cost.
Or the first 10 mins are free and then the scrambler sets in, if you don't insert coin.
For those of us who don't have PVRs, something occured to me. If I'm really into a show, I may want to pay for the commercials not to come up. Interrupt the show with a "Do you want to pay $0,01 now or endure these commercials"-message.

I started out with D&D and I know two people were credited, but with a name like "Gary Gygax", how can anyone be expected to remember the other dude Arneson,... something Arneson...?

Sony support is getting a reputation for these reactions.
I had a problem with my Sony camcorder which they were telling me was my problem. Fortunatly I found out on usenet that many other people were having the same problem (bad firewire connection) and I sat down and wrote a two page letter on all the steps I had gone through to make sure there was a hardware glitch (tested in on three systems, under three OSs) and included as many links as I could find to other people's posts who had same problem. And oh yeah - I told them I was an IT professional. I sent them the letter with the camcorder and they fixed it no problem.
I'm typing this from a IBM t21 which I have the same experiences with: no scratches, no loose fittings, no problems. I have used it every working day for at least 8 hours for the last year. I love this machine.
My friend and gf have t20 and a t21 - no problems at all.

What I never got was this: you buy something insanely expensive, a camcorder, a TV, whatever, and all you get is a shitty paper black/white manual with it. Are you even supposed to read that, or is that just the guarantee? How about getting one of those few brilliant teachers to explain how the fucking thing works... on video... and include the videotape for free. That MUST: - increase post-sale satisfaction (or whatever its called) - reduce support calls
I see my mother with a computer, and she's so afraid of it. I have tried to explain the basics, but she just doesnt get it. A jolly video which started out REAL slow would be much better for her than a manual or even me.
I run a community site with a pretty complex point system (though much simpler than/. but with a much less tech audience) and whatever I wrote to explain it, they just didnt get it. I would spend rediculous amounts of time doing support. Then I found this product to do "manuals" in Flash and now everyone seem to get it. (see examples here)
Not _really_ what you want (it has video, and im not sure about upgradability), but fcuk this little ripper looks nice! Most like it's going to be launched later this year.
