Not everyone that has a lot of money is evil. Not everyone that has a lot of money does nice things to cover their ass when they do "bad" things (I place bad in quotes because aggressive != bad all the time.)
So... did you ever stop to think that maybe he donates money because he wants to help people?
No, you didn't. You're just passing judgment, presuming to know what's going on in his head. Ass.
Comparing Saddam Hussein and Libya to Bill Gates is just plain ridiculous... Microsoft is not evil, despite what everyone on Slashdot would have you believe. Aggressive? Sure. Unethical? Hmm... maybe. A lot of the people posting here think that if you charge money for something you're being unethical, so I tend not to take opinions too seriously here.
I mean, if you can link Bill Gates to murder, then maybe we have something to talk about.
Vigilantes arise when there is no authority, or when authority is corrupt and part of the problem.
If someone rapes your mom, and you go kill the guy instead of calling the police, you are a vigilante. That has nothing to do with corrupt authority or no authority.
Your argument has just been dismantled. Have a nice day.
Mine was the second comment re: Terminal Man. The first one got posted less than 2 minutes before mine, when I was in the middle of writing my comment.
Michael Crichton sort of covered this in his book Terminal Man... the guy gets electrical current run into his brain when he starts getting blacking out and becoming violent...
I've been informed on two separate occassions that if I get a third ticket within the three year window that my insurance will be dropped.
Okay, so I go get insurance with another provider?
Well gee, genius, I guess you shouldn't be speeding. Actions have consequences.
You're not entitled to insurance.
You're not entitled to have a license.
Driving is a privilege, based on the assumption that you will drive responsibly. If you drive irresponsibly and get caught, the insurance company has a right to know that you are more of a risk than their responsible clients, and is entitled to charge you more.
If you are a big enough risk, they don't stand to profit. So why should anyone insure you? You shouldn't be on the road!
And for those of you with useless advice like, "don't speed!" or "you do the crime, you do the time!" you can bite my ass. Everyone speeds.
Nope. Not everyone speeds. You are incorrect in this assumption.
Cops routinely do 10-15 over, no lights.
So call them on it, bitching on Slashdot accomplishes nothing.
If I don't speed, I'm going to get run over.
No, you won't.
And if you "go with the flow" then you play the lottery.
What the hell are you talking about? That is the whole point of safe driving, is everyone is supposed to go with the flow and be alert.
Given these two options, game theory says I might as well get where I'm going a bit faster.
I hope you lose your insurance. You are a prime example of the self-centered "me first" mentality that pervades society. You think you're entitled to everything and don't care about other people's well-being.
I wonder what percentage of software developers that are on the clock are using OSS. I bet most of these developers are doing this stuff in their free time for zero pay.
Before I hear any BS arguments, let me clarify -- the END RESULT of a code project (like a video game), may itself be a work of art, but the code itself is not.
Firewalls are not art. Operating systems are not art. Etc.
I am so sick of this "open source as art" BS. That's like calling a blender a piece of art. Code is functional, it's not art. A car isn't a work of art, either. Sure, it might be engineered well, it might look nice, it might run smoothly, but it's not art.
Art is something like a movie, or a painting, or music.
People that consider code "art" only do so because it somehow makes them feel better about being code monkeys instead of doing something that is actually artistic.
I guess if you do a good job crimping your own network cable, that's art too? Ugh.
It's really dubious that they're even allowed to fire him on such short notice; so this action definitely stinky... it's as if they're taking whatever actions they can to legally fire him on the spot and sink his ship as soon as possible.
Pennsylvania allows employers to fire at will. Don't need a reason. It's not dubious -- if you don't want someone working for you, fire 'em. If they're causing problems, fire 'em. I don't see how that's dubious. If you're the boss, you decide what happens at your company.

How is this not a troll? Shows get ratings because people watch them. If you don't like them, don't watch them -- but just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it's idiotic, it just means you're an asshole.
I will be moderated off-topic, but Snape kills Dumbledore!!!
So if someone is trying to kick your ass, it is wrong to try to stop them with violence?
That is clown shoes.
Violence against anyone is wrong, unless it's in self-defense.
Is it OK to use violence to defend someone else? Like if you see a rape being committed?
How about in a sanctioned boxing match?

Not everything Microsoft does is bad. Not everything they do is ill-intentioned.
Just like the TSA, I'd imagine.
Who knows, they might be as one-sided as you, but I sincerely doubt it.
Hey, how much money have you donated to charity this year? My guess is none.
Bill Gates has donated millions upon millions.
Oh, that Bill Gates, what an evil bastard.
Hey, I'm proud of you, at least you weren't immature enough to type "M$".

Wow. The post has nothing to do with Microsoft, and you still manage to take a shot at them.
What an asshole.
They probably did it so people can't make a chat client for MSN that looks suspiciously like MSN messenger.

Great book. Read it.

Let me tell you something brother, Hulk Hogan has one, I saw it on Hogan Knows Best! Whatcha gonna do when Segway runs wild on you??
Amazingly, though, none of the Star Trek people had bad teeth... something to ponder.
Yes, but the zombies here on Slashdot don't understand that. They just hear "Microsoft" and assume "bad".
I wonder what percentage of software developers that are on the clock are using OSS. I bet most of these developers are doing this stuff in their free time for zero pay.
They'd spend more of our tax money to hire more lawyers. Then they'd tax us more.
GREAT IDEA!
