I would like to think that I would be that noble. If my company were shutting down and had taken good care of me, I might continue to work until I found another job. There might also be the thought in the back of my head about being rewarded if things were to turn around... Regardless I think that it would only be beneficial to the Engineers. They keep working, so even if they are asked about that job, the fact they are still working after being laid off says a lot to another employer about their character. Meanwhile they have a high-speed internet connection for sending out those resumes.

"but I'm beginning to wonder if some mirroring software (e.g., Unison) might be in order. It'd provide the function of backups, as well as guaranteeing availability"

No really it would provide the "function of backups" becuase the purpose of backups isn't just for hardware failure, but also for accidental deletions, incorrect changes to files etc. So in this way if something like that happened, it would simply be mirrored to the other machine. I'd hate to loose my data.

I think they are trying to get as many age groups as possible, in the past Lucas has said that he doesn't pay any attention to the demographics of his fan base.

That said I think it is common practice for film producers to add scenes to get certain ratings. For instance I think fewer people would go see a horror movie that wasn't rated R. Then they choose to market that same movies toward teens knowing it makes teens "feel" like adults to go see an R rated movie.

I totally agree. I love telemarketers. Anytime a long distance company calls I have this long routine... I asked them if they'll give me .05 a minute 365 days a years 7 days a week. I then get them to commit to a time period... I explain how when you do the math it is $XX,000 dollars. I then ask when I'll receive my check and if it will be an annual payment. They tell me they aren't going to give me a check for $38,000 dollars. I tell them that's fine, I accept money orders cash and travelers checks. My record is 22 minutes.

My wife gets annoyed... meanwhile the New York Times calls and tries to sell me a weekend subscription at a $83 savings. They say it'll be delivered to my door. I tell them that more than a $83.. in the first month alone I could save $800.00, becuase each plane ticket to new york is $200.00...

Just listen to what they are selling and find something to make fun of. Provides for hours fun to tell your friends about.

I found a game called Space Quest - The Lost Adventures. Someone has programmed this game based off the Space Quest series. I was curious so I downloaded the game and couldn't stop playing it.

These games can be made either using AGI (KQ1 etc) or the new SCI engine (KQ4 etc). There are 2 complete engines that I found where it shows you how to create your own. They seem pretty easy to use. I found you can use the Above mentioned game to create your own. Sounds like fun. Anyway here are the links:

It's more than just having technical skills, but the people skills that make people feel at ease and that they are making the right decision. I don't have a degree either. I do work my butt off and I'm always careful to keep an eye on my ego. Nobody likes a know-it-all. I'm not saying everyone can do it. But there are those people out there that have the "soft skills" that allow them to succeed to a great degree if they can learn technical skills. Sometimes they just don't know it. If I were a hiring manager I would look not for certifications or technical skills as much as the person and there capability to learn and interact with other people. If they have that they can learn anything techinical. Just my 2 cents.

  13. Darkstar BBS on BBS Documentary Starting To Film · · Score: 1

I sent this message in, I was wondering if anyone else used Darkstar and had any comments... (aside from bashing it's author. Many people feel they were ripped off since they for 2.0 and it never came out of beta). Aside from that I was wondering if anyone ran dual BBS's like I did. Darkstar and RA?

    Hello,

I found the BBS documentary project off of slashdot.org. It looked really extensive. In 92 I started to get into BBS's. It just so happened, the author of Darkstar BBS lived 2 blocks from my house. I used to go over there all the time. I was known as Joey Fowler back then. Jerry Thomas Hunter was the author. He had a product that was HTMl before there was HTML. Behind the scenes though there was a much different story from what boardwalk magazine showed, and the tradeshows they attended. Ken McDowell worked with Jerry. There were 2 sides to the story but after the 1st version came out they parted ways, with the whole product remaining with Jerry. He would tell people "It'll be ready anyday now". He was programming in VP, and he was good but spent too much time supporting it and not enough writing code. Version 2 beta came out, but was never finished. I moved away from the area and I heard rumors of rip-offs etc, but I still believe Darkstar could have been a solid product if things had been run right. Below are the few links with actual information I could find on the internet. If you're interested in finding out more let me know.

After reading the article it wasn't clear to me whether they could still freeze assets etc to get their $15,000 a day fine. What if Yahoo wanted to open an office there one day, would it be denied? I would think it would possible.

Assumming we have a treaty with France that we cooperate in freezing assets, much like the US is doing with terrorists networks, does that mean France could influence other countries to freeze Yahoo's assets? I think Yahoo will probably still worry about these things, in effect letting the French Government win.
