no it's not because he was afraid some black hat could run diff.
it's because the vendors wouldn't cooperate to make the privsep work and he got all frustrated because the other code couldn't be fixed in time either.
it wasn't kept quiet for very long -- maybe a week or two while solutions were implemented. The big delay was that the vendors didn't believe it was real.
if NPR really wants to prevent others from linking, they can configure their server to check the referrer portion of the web request. if it's not from an npr site, redirect to the policy page.
it's easy to do in apache
ob slashdot whine: this has come up before in the last couple months
on the other hand, if someone wants to smear the GPL they can imply things that aren't true about it -- like that if you use emacs to edit your code, you have to give your code away for free
or if you compile with gcc, your code again must be free
etc. etc.
when in reality, the gpl is just saying that if your product uses emacs as it's built in editor, then you will have to share your extensions

this would be the laser craft that is being worked on by a professor where I went to school.
It sounds pretty crazy, but I think they plan to lift passengers and cargo into space using really big lasers to vaporize the air beneath the spacecraft for propulsion. I always wondered what would happen if the mirror on the bottom were not totally clean and hear built up.
anyway -- here's a link to an article about the project back in 1997:
sounds like Orwell's 1984 where they would simplify the dictionary each year taking out the unneeded words, thereby eliminating the ability to even think or talk about topics that the official government deemed dangerous or unnecessary.
All terminals are provided with slip-on latex protectors for the prevention of Voltage Destruction. (PILL packaged devices do not require protection.)"
Sony makes so many really nice looking consumer devices -- it's a real shame that the company's official position is that the vaio is for windows only. It runs linux really well. But don't call Sony and tell them -- they will be annoyed.
ms does have a lot of money, but they use that as a reason to do nothing most of the time until the opportunity passes. Look at the history:
webtv -- they bought it and sat on it
go -- remember go, the pda in the early 90s?
remember windows with pen extensions??
somehow, pilot was able to make an entirely new market from something that microsoft bought, developed, then threw away because their research showed that nobody wanted to leave windows 3.1
so, what I'm saying is that Microsoft's huge cash reserve actually hurts their innovation because they have no drive to make anything new or better.
what's wrong with that??
what a lame job of baiting... better, right?
are there 100s of thousands of old windows boxes
with lame tcp/ip or are people running hpux on
their dsl and cable modem boxes now?

guess what the MS in msnbc stands for?
yeah -- you too
this is so silly.

how about security type jobs?
I agree, but it's hard to explain that to people.

no, you can't just check crap in. you obvious troll
just because a project is open source doesn't
mean there's no security
with Microsoft, it really does mean that.
HOW THE HELL DID THE FLIGHT SIMULATOR GET INTO EXCELL??
ha ha ha ha ha !!
I think the last line is the best:
"I am an apple service technician"
so mr apple guy, why did solaris, ibm, hp,
sgi, cray, and any other large system have
console access boot passwords then?
many of the older ones don't even have one
mouse button like your apple, so it must be
even better, right? less complicated.
ha ha ha ha
Its funny when the apple people believe their
own made up history -- and think the mistakes
were divine inspiration and good design.
* no second mouse button? GREAT!
* no boot password? FANTASTIC!
* fruity colors and transparency?
double plus ungood!

it's no different than stealing cable by splitting
your neighbor's cable feed. it's theft of service
"Because I know of two FATAL bugs right now [...]
did not encourage me to bother pursuing it. "
but you have no problem with wasting your time
posting to slashdot about how much you think
mozilla developers are mean to you.
good plan!

that's crazy -- isn't that what the high school guidance counseler would suggest?
yes -- mozilla and galeon have gestures now
I used to use opera for the gesture feature,
but galeon and mozilla are getting better so
quickly, I've switched back to galeon.
there is a preferences option to switch the
gesture features on, hidden in the settings pulldown

makes me wonder where Mehra has been for those last
five to ten years -- blindfolded maybe?
someone's been drinking the company cool-aid too long, and he's starting to believe his own stories.
;)
you guys were ripped off.
you should get something
that is worth the price and stop listening to
the people at sun that are trying to unload their
overpriced old hardware.
really -- this guy must be getting blowjobs from the sun salesmen or something. but that's the typical sales technique in the industry.
;-)
microsoft is more into whips and chains
just stupid, I guess.
