It is sad that today's kids are so advertised/brainwashed with the "achievements" of big businesses that scientist/engineers are looked upon with disdain. University enrollment in engineering and science reaches all time low. Everybody wants to be a banker or lawyer (or, if they have still some decency), or a doctor.
Something needs to be done to bring these kids back to doing useful things.
The fact that X11 runs on OS X is very very overrated. Many of us don't really appreciate that. We would, however, appreciate it if Apple can provide more incentives to us who uses only vi, latex, and the web browser. We don't want the flashy desktop, but we want to feel comfortable with these apps.
We would also prefer our computers to be reasonably priced and not be an icon of self expression --- our work is important, the OS is not.
I agree with you. The young Firefox's developers seems to forget that if gecko had been written to the "cut corners" philosophy, there wouldn't be a so-called "Firefox revival" today.
Think again. What really do we want? What happens if industry cut corners, produce more waste to reduce cost? That'll benefit consumers --- at least for the short term.
With respect to programming -- what is the aim? Make things idiot-proof? Make things purty? More fanciful presentations? Or would it be better if we teach everyone a little bit of programming, and perhaps promote a little logical thinking on the way?
You are like asking, since we all have to die anyway, why do doctors work to save our lives? Where is the point where doctors should just "let go"?
Nobody will agree on a sure answer. And the same person may even give different answers based on his/her mood of the day, what the pastor said the day before, or even the movie that he/she last watched.
As for me? I say doctors should fight till the end --- just for the idealism. As such we should also fight to the end to realize these ideals, being mature enough to know that they may but be futile or meaningless.

The spammer is given fixed duration prison sentence. In the cell he gets a terminal to read email --- with no spam filtering software, so he gets spammed _exactly_ like everybody else. Everyday he is sent a mail containing a combination to a door, through which his meals are delivered.
This way, there is even a hope that he would starve to death from his colleagues' work! YeeeHaaaw!
