This is an idiotic who had a mental breakdown (or whatever) and removed FB because it was "too hard and ruined peoples loves", after he staged a meltdown online where he blatantly lied and said that the amount of money he was raking in was too much and posed a threat to himself because of where he lived in the world.
IMHO, this jackass should have been banned from the App Store with all the shenanigans he pulled. Now you jackasses are giving him free PR again, because he wrote another shitty HTML5 game that is once more purportedly "too hard". Nice.
Wow. This guy proves i kan reed's point IMMEDIATELY.
Wow. I hadn't noticed that Amazon was marketing the Fire tablets as e-readers, but yeah, that's the wrong hardware for the job. Sounds like a group of marketers at Amazon think that their poop can dance and do tricks.
ADHD meds are no more a slippery slope than Antidepressants before them. And they were no more a slippery slope than the Tobacco/Pot/Alcohol/Coffee before them. Arguments like yours are why Slippery Slope is considered a logical fallacy.
I'm saying that seeking chemical sources to soothe over the overabundance of reward-based interactions we are experiencing will naturally progress towards escalating both the drugs and the reward-based interactions. I apologize if I misused the term "slippery slope". Invoking antidepressants as an example of harmlessness is far more questionable than any incorrect naming of a type of fallacy I may have done.
You don't know? I graduated from the school that passes out pieces of paper that prove I'm more authoritative than you are. Look at my creds, they prove everything! It's way better than thinking about what I'm saying. Now shut up and call me Doctor.
On the plus side, even if we accept the assertion that the disorder is nonsense (which is questionable; but for the sake of argument); the usual treatment has the virtue of being sufficiently useful, safe, and even pleasant that plenty of people who don't even suspect ADHD will try to score some through alternate channels or complain until they get a prescription.
The risks aren't zero, and there are certain people who should stay away; but psychostimulants are some very nice drugs.
I have to reject that. Slippery slope. If we take enough drugs, we can totally mechanize and work/play on our machines/selves/machineselves all the time, and be "content" about it. Why would that be good, as opposed to changing our expectation of the next generation being the same mental configuration as the previous one?
You misunderstand me. I'm not blaming technology. I'm blaming our lack of understanding of how our interaction with it affects us as a group over time.
The correlation between military FPS and real war is mindshare/recruiting. Why do you deceive yourself? For fun? You love CoD so much you can't see the downside? I don't get it.
The persistence of the notion of this disorder is disturbing. The method by which it's diagnosed is faulty. You can't come in after all this legacy of crap and tell us that you can diagnose it physiologically using a single criteria like this. These assertions will be disproven within the year. The entire ADHD diagnosis phenomenon is the culture struggling with the ramifications of human interaction with technology. You can't set the example of "pay close attention to the stimulating box for long periods of time" over multiple generations and not expect a massive change in the way kids behave. Whether they fit in with our plans or not, these kids are NORMAL. It's the expectation that this generation will behave like the previous one which is faulty.
This doesn't solve the problems listed, it makes them worse. By having multiple stores you decrease each apps visibility, unless the developers do much more work to list their apps in every store. Taking time that would otherwise be devoted to developing more or better apps.
I don't agree, Basil. More app stores means more/different lists of most "popular" apps, and more diverse bodies of users who will be looking for something different. It's not very Apple, but it is true. Does this mean developers have to choose which market/appstore to be sweet to? Yes. This is simply "humans" managing the App store, as Tim Cook pretended to propose. He meant "Apple employees who do what we tell them," but we are suggesting more truly independently run App stores.
You seem to be pursuing a dream where Apple drives customers to independent Apps. That was a fine dream when iOS was fledgling. Now, it's a behemoth. New stores, new markets, new risks, new rewards for new developers.
Next you'll be telling me they'll let us run unsigned code on processors capable of doing so. You need to get onboard, citizens. All fast processing is to occur in monitored silos. Slow processing can be delegated to the personal level, but only with crippled processors that cannot run code that hasn't yet been registered with the authorities and digitally signed. You kids ask the wrong questions. Ungood.
quietwalker, you are treading dangerous waters. If you talk sense here, people won't be sure if you're on their side or not, and then they won't know whether to mod you up or down. Look at the other replies to your comment...they've got you practically eating babies already. Stop making sense and expecting people to think. I find it's best to make jokes.
I hope you're being disingenuous, because what I was saying is far from difficult to comprehend. Why don't you explain to me where I said Russia is concerned about its citizens's personal privacy? I'm saying they are concerned about surveillance of their citizens by foreign powers.
...then access to the Internet no longer looks like "free speech" or an economic stimulant. It now simply looks like foreign surveillance of my citizens, who are ignorant to how they're being harvested and used for the interest of external powers. If life were a game of Civ, and I was playing as Russia, I'd cut off the Internet too.
Ah. Now I'm with you. I had the pronoun "they" in what you said referring to customers and not EA, and I did see chattel as cattle. Anyway, I found something to eat since then. I agree. They see us as their chattel, and that's why it's highly unlikely that I would ever buy anything from them. Take a look at this sampling of the crap they are planting on Gamefaqs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards....
It is absolutely possible to notice a pattern of genre preferences.
Agreed. Yes, I have noticed many patterns of genre preferences in others. The most common pattern I've noticed is the homophobic a person is, the more they love macho-seeming movies, and more likely to be secretly doubting their own sexuality. What does that have to do with disagreeing with me?
I have a hard time believing that you are truly, utterly agnostic to all data points and extrapolations.
Also correct. What does that have to do with the fact that I am truly, utterly agnostic to genre preferences?
I like the Avengers. But it doesn't shock me when somebody just isn't a fan of the superhero movie genre. I don't like sports movies. I suppose it's hypothetically possible that a really great one could come out, but I'd bet against it.
(I'm a bit skeptical of calling Firefly a Western, even if the producers called it that -- but then, I don't know that I really have a good handle on what a Western actually is).
It sounds to me like it's time for a John Ford deep dive for you. Maybe a little Sam Peckinpah. It's totally worth it, and will inform your views on other genres.
The sports movie thing may come over time. They certainly aren't all good, but sample the boxing subgenre (The Set-up, Rocky, Raging Bull) before writing the entire genre off. Personally, I love a good formula sports movie as an easily-accessible bit of pastime that can be shared with others. Hoosiers, Rudy, and and The Worlds Fastest Indian come to mind as movies that have served to entertain the whole room in recent years at my house.
Again, let me assert, arbitrary genre preferences are a burden to YOURSELF and others. Especially true for those of you thinking about being filmmakers.
Brick and mortar bookstore doesn't sell books with DRM so you can sell it or donate it at your pleasure?
You forget, comrade, that paper books are much harder to alter after publication than electronic ones. How will we control history if we let the literate middle class continue to hold us accountable for the past? We must encourage the elimination of paper as quickly as possible. Then the people will be free from the burdensome moral responsibility of keeping track of their rulers and histories, and therefore, happier.
I see. So, people are stupid, and therefore it's right for EA and Microsoft to resurrect their cancelled non-virtual credit cards from the dead and continue to charge against them? I'm aware that I'm putting words into your mouth, but turnabout's fair. I think your friends and family's foolishnesses are darling, too.
I am ignorant about many things. My ass is ignorant to just about everything. However, my response to the other poster needs an answer. You may still be ignorant to that response's contents, but you can remedy that by reading it. Your ass, however, will remain ignorant, as mine does.

You're not under the impression the Paperwhite isn't e-ink are you? It is. Paperwhite is e-ink with a sidelight built in.
That's not how you spell Hole Foods.

Which medical school did you graduate from?
You don't know? I graduated from the school that passes out pieces of paper that prove I'm more authoritative than you are. Look at my creds, they prove everything! It's way better than thinking about what I'm saying. Now shut up and call me Doctor.

I don't think "paper eliminates itself over time" is valid as a criticism of its archival value. What was your reason for saying this?
Brick and mortar bookstore doesn't sell books with DRM so you can sell it or donate it at your pleasure?
You forget, comrade, that paper books are much harder to alter after publication than electronic ones. How will we control history if we let the literate middle class continue to hold us accountable for the past? We must encourage the elimination of paper as quickly as possible. EA has established itself as a company that views customers as the enemy.
You normally respect or are wary of an enemy...
If you don't, they are already your chattel or your victim...
Wait a minute...are you saying we can eat EA? What does EA taste like? This sounds like a good plan, and is making me hungry.
Therefore, the Milky Way's mass is less than zero. What a difference an "-ly" makes. They should have sent their words to Lolly's.
I agree, that does appear to solve the problem. If I want to play any of the games they're offering on a DRM basis, that's the way I will do it.
I am ignorant about many things. My ass is ignorant to just about everything. However, my response to the other poster needs an answer. You may still be ignorant to that response's contents, but you can remedy that by reading it. Your ass, however, will remain ignorant, as mine does.
