Though most of the article is about right, it is a bit misguided at times:
Some of the default settings make it all too easy to destroy the existing contents of your hard disk. [?!]
But, I also happened to come across this article at The Register that actually provides for a more balanced look at the install process:
As for other hardware detection, Mandrake was infallible. The drives; the wheel-mouse, the keyboard, the monitor, the video card (nVidia Ge-Force AGP 64 MB), the sound card (SoundBlaster Live), all of it. All I had to do was confirm its choices every now and then.
So, Mandrake 8.1 looks like a good choice for a beginner, and I definitely look forward to Mandrake 9.x:).
I see that the article links to several of the remixes ("Think Barney meets Metallica"). But, unfortunately, they all seem to be Slashdotted. Anyone got a mirror?
Who want to surf the Internet with Konqueror? Sounds like a death metal band.
Just to clarify, "Konqueror" sounds more like a power metal band than a death metal band. Some power metal bands include Demons & Wizards, Kamelot, and Virgin Steele. And, here're some examples of death metal bands: Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, and Solstice of Suffering. See the difference?:)

Personally, I'm a big fan of racing games, such as the Need For Speed series (I like the varied environment there, as opposed to a set track from, for instance, Formula 1 games). High Stakes was good, but that's a bit old now. And, Porsche Unleashed only has Porsches, of course.
Are there any new racing games that I should check out? And, before you suggest it, I'm not particularly interested in Motor City Online, as I prefer non-Internet play;).
My box has an Athlon 600 MHz with an Asus K7M mobo. At this point, I'm trying for a quiet PC (at least as quiet as I can get it). I've already installed an Ultra Quiet power supply and a SilentDrive enclosure, and those are working well so far.
As far as I can tell, the primary remaining source of the noise is the chipset fan (an RDJD K701). Looking through 2Cooltek (a good source for cooling products), I came across the "Alpha P7125 Athlon/SECC Cooler (no fans)". However, does the "no fans" designation mean that the cooler comes without fans but needs them, or that it comes without fans and can operate without them? I'm thinking that if indeed it can operate without fans, then that could mean a significant sound reduction for me.
Then again, if that one does require the fans, then I'm guessing that it's about the same loudness as my current setup:-/. In that case, are there other quiet-coolers I should try? Or, should I just go straight to the

It assuredly doesn't work in 0.9.5. That "trick" hasn't even worked since 0.9.2. I'm not saying this to disparage you, but just to clarify things. Not to worry, though, work is being done on a spellchecker for Mozilla.
Well, not really.. After all, bugs are being fixed all the time, resulting in a constant net reduction in the bug-count.
Perhaps what you're referring to are the occasional annoying bugs that creep into the nightly builds from time to time (such as session history being broken, which is now fixed, btw). But, don't let that scare you away from the nightlies. Simply check out the Build Comments at Mozillazine. Every day, the nightlies are rated with a simple "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down". So, if you're concerned about running into weirdness, just avoid the "thumbs-down" builds:).
That is funny (+5) they admit that the release of 1.0 [mozilla.org] is a bug.
I think you may misunderstand Bugzilla. It's an issue-tracking system, where each issue happens to have the term "bug". So, for instance, bugs are even filed for feature requests.

The problem with context menus, especially since they activate on mousedown-then-mouseup (instead of just mousedown) is that they offer no muscle memory. With Netscape 4.x, for instance, the context menu activated on mousedown. That allowed such movements as mousedown - drag right - select Back - release button, all in one stroke. Now, with the contextmenu activating on mouseup (after mousedown), muscle memory no longer comes into play.
But, that's where mouse gestures come in. Sure, it may take a few minutes to learn. But, after a while, it's all second nature and you don't even need to think about it -- just like how copy-n-pasting is probably effortless to you since "your fingers" know all the right keys to press without you having to consciously think about it.
In IE the 4th button is the Page back feature.. this is WAY more convinient than every possible guesture, just press ur thumb , and page back.
That specific functionality is bug 30431. Feel free to vote for it if that issue is important to you.
In the meantime, there are still ways in which you can make use of those extra buttons:
First, configure at least one of the side-buttons to Ctrl
Select "Ctrl" from the pull-down and set the radio button to "Move back and forward in the browsing history".
Now, to move back or forward, just hold down the side-button that you configured to Ctrl and move the mouse wheel. Ok, so it's not as nice as just a click, but at least it's something until bug 30431 is fixed.
For those not aware, "still-pumped-from-using-the-mouse" is an allusion to Scott Adams' Dilbert book "Still Pumped From Using The Mouse". It's a compilation of the strips from 12/14/92 - 9/27/93, and you can actually get it used for about $0.75 + s/h.
Ok, so XM Radio has one metal channel, playing wannabe metal such as Korn, Limb Bizkit, and Marilyn Manson. But, out of "100 channels", there's still not one that offers melodic death metal such as In Flames or power metal such as Helloween!? Bah. (And, FWIW, it doesn't look like Sirius fares any any better)
But, to their credit, XM Radio does offer BBC World Service, which is almost reason enough alone to sign up:).
They're not currently compatible, but they soon will be:
The first Sirius and XM receivers will not be compatible, however, so customers will have to choose which service they prefer. The companies did agree to cross-license their technologies so that future receivers could access both signals.

The bug for getting a spell checker into Mozilla is bug 56301. If you can help out with the effort, that would be fantastic, as the bug is somewhat stalled at the moment.
It used to be that you could install Netscape's spellchecker, but that is no longer supported.
PS Gerv: This message isn't directed at you, but primarily at the parent post to your post.
In Windows NT/2000, users can set in the mouse preferences for the mouse to automagically move to the default button in dialog boxes and alerts. However, Mozilla doesn't currently cooperate with this.
The bug has keyword "helpwanted", so if you know how to accomplish this functionality, please speak up:). Or, if you aren't inclined to programming, you can also vote for the bug (of course, you'll need a free Bugzilla account to vote).

I was starting to believe in Viacom, the owner of Comedy Central and, thus, Battlebots. Though I had my doubts, at first, Viacom actually seemed to be doing non-evil things with Comedy Central.
But, maybe I should have seen this coming. After all, Viacom owns such atrocities as MTV. Even worse, in my mind, is that they also own Blockbuster, which is driving out mom-n-pop video stores through unfair practices with the movie studios (Blockbuster gets the physical videos for wicked-cheap in exchange for profit sharinng with the studios). So, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.
It's true that it's not free (bummer there). But, another way to think of it is that, instead of paying $100+ for Windoze, you'd only be paying $20 for Linux ($0 distro + $20 for this).

In a way, Slashdot is to thank for this. Back when Mozilla 0.9.2 was released, there was a +5 comment on the possibility of Opera-like gestures. That led people to read about gestures in bug 76537 and, from there, the community stepped up to the plate (specifically, Andy Edmonds). Nice.
