  1. title and summary conflict on Palm's webOS Root Image Leaks Out · · Score: 1, Informative

The title and the summary of this article aren't in total agreement (one says Reset Doctor, other says root image).
The Reset Doctor wasn't leaked, its available on Palm's site: http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/32759_en.html
The WebOS root image is what I would consider being leaked.

Do we roll Discovery out and hope third time is a charm? or do we just ride the less of the broken shuttles home, and scrap the program when they get home?

  3. Re:Then & Now on Back to Moon in 2015? · · Score: -1
For real, how can it possibly take longer to do it again, if we already did it before? The R&D phase is over. We know what to do.

We were lucky most of the astronauts survived. The previous moon landings were not safe, and not as well thought out as they should be. Especially, with the new technology (computers, alloys ...) we should really start from scratch to make it as safe and productive as possible.

  4. I am an IT professional with a CompSci Minor on How Valuable is a Minor in Computer Science? · · Score: -1

I have been very successful in my short (5 year) career - although I don't attribute most of that to the minor. I got my first job because I did computer work part time as a student for them. I'd have to agree that experience is more important. Get a job with the local Helpdesk or within the computer department at school.

    - It's an automated camera. Amazing what technology they had in those days! Lucky that, otherwise they would have had to leave a cameraman behind to die :-)

Actually, that camera shot was controlled remotely from earth. They only did that once, during the Apollo 17 mission. From what I have read, that poor guy was just a little nervous :).

  10. Hurt Firefox? on Netscape 8 to Emphasize Security · · Score: 0, Interesting

I question whether this will hurt Firefox's forward momentum. If netscape 8 is as good as firefox, then I would see it stealing a share of the market from firefox (not IE). The part that really concerns me is that once it gets popularity, will they start putting ads and revenue generators in the browser, similar to what AOL did to their AIM client?

  11. smtptrapd on De-spamming Your Inbox The Hard Way · · Score: -1

If you have a place to run this, try smtptrapd. Since spammers often target backup MX servers, setup this program to listen on port 25 and have it set as your last mail server (higher MX value). It will always issue a 4xx style error, forcing the sending server to try again later. If your main server fails, you still lose nothing from having this there... legit mail will just spool on the sending side. I've noticed a significant decrease in spam.

  16. Why game systems are successful on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The nice thing about game consoles is that all the hardware is basically the same. If I buy a game for PS2 or XBOX, I know it will work on my PS2 or XBOX. Start letting someone put the linux based game distro on any PC, and they will complain about performance and certain things not working properly because they decided to test it on that old 486 they had in the closet.

A concert where the artist sounds great, or a concert where the artist sounds terrible? If I pay $50 per seat, I'd like to hear something I'll enjoy, whether it is slightly modified or not. Bad music isn't fun.

  19. I don't think it is easy to tell on Has the Internet Changed College? · · Score: 1
There are those of us who went to college before the internet and there are those of us who went after. It is hard for either group to recognize how it has changed as they were there to witness the other side of things.

Granted, there might be a group of people from any one school that spans a 4 year period in which they witnessed both, but even their lives started to get influenced by computers and the internet prior to it actually hitting their campus.

  20. Get a laptop with a docking station on What Kind Of Computer To Bring To College? · · Score: 1

I think that provides the most flexibility. I had both a desktop and laptop at college and the laptop helped me do a paper in the library, instead of being sucked into a game of cards in the dorm. All I really used the desktop for was games. If you get a laptop with a dock, you save yourself the cost of a desktop and in theory get the best of both worlds. One thing to remember, BUY A LOCK, even if you trust your roomates!
