  1. Actually on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 2

I use my PDA, along with a keyboard, to take notes during some of my heavier classes. I really don't need to carry a notebook to class anymore, excluding foreign languages. And I'm done with foreign languages after this semester.

Generally speaking, yes, I could get along without my PDA (and had to when I cracked the screen), but I'd rather not have to deal without it. I've also got a few hours (via a CF card) of music on it, which is great for keeping me awake during some of the more boring classes.

If people read /. on the day of the election, go out and vote, they will probably be helping the tech community just a little.

That doesn't even get into the issue of people who know that elections are coming up and just forgot what day it was on. I know that as a college student a reminder that today was election day might have been helpful. I glance at /. every morning before I go out to class. Now, I voted by absentee two weeks ago, so that doesn't affect me, but how many others actually would vote if they were only reminded to.

Remember, if you don't vote you don't have the right to complain about who's in office.

My point is that by the time it's out, the GF5 could well be out. The card will, doubtless, tear up the Radeon 9700. Now, I've seen the Radeon in action, and it really can tear up any other card. The GF4 can't hold a candle to it.

My point is that now that ATI looks to be serious about graphics again, we're going to see quite the fight between them and nVidia. The cards are going to keep going back an forth. One company will gain an edge, retain it for awhile, and then the other will make a come-back.

It's not a huge stretch to figure this out.

It honestly doesn't make sense to optimize for any one platform / card. It makes sense to optimize the hell out the entire game. Sweet merciful crap, look at UT2003. That game/engine is optimized.

The cards don't make a lick of differnce. The newest will usually beat the latest from the other guy, especially now that ATI is being a more serious threat. DX9 doesn't matter that much. NV30 (the GF5) will have that too.

Why even bother comparing load times?

For the personal user, even the "6 hours" some say is required to install 2K is very little. For the corporation, they Ghost. It's a 5 minute install.

BTW, one of the above comments mentioned a 6 hour install of 2K? Well, sir, I will say that it did recently take me all of 6 hours to install all my drivers, updates, Office, etc. Of course, why would I ever mention that this was on a PII 266 w/ 256MB of RAM? Oh, and that the install was Advanced Server, not Pro?

It took, oh, maybe 2.5 hours, tops, to install (Pro) on my primary system.

Sigh. I digress. The issue is not about install time. As I said, corporations can do all their installs much more quickly. Ghost it, or use another system imaging tool. Home users might get screwed occasionally by a really long load time.

The real issue is stability and functionality. Who cares how long it takes to install if you don't have to do it again? I have had to blow away my copy of 2K twice since I've started using it. The cause BOTH times were for upgrades. Motherboard upgrades. I had a Mobo blow out on me, and the replacement had a bad memory controller from the get-go. Now, I've been running fine for over 6 months, and am well on my way to 5, if not 6, nines of uptime.

That is with the box being made to do gaming. I rarely need reboots, and haven't needed to reinstall. As much as I've played with Linux, on box #2, I've also never needed to screw with reinstalling it. It also doesn't get as many hardware upgrades. I don't use it for the same features, but you know what? I'm happy with both of them. I couldn't care less which one took longer to install. (BTW, Linux took longer but it was a clean Gentoo install so point == moot)

Why does MT get special treatment? Because their banner occasionally runs uptop? Is it because MT is done in a more Anime style? Maybe I'll submit a story about Exploitation Now being about to end. Or when Poe announces that he's putting EN into a book. Odds it get's posted, though EN is an anime-style comic? Probably not great.

I don't mind getting the announcement here, in fact it's nice to have it on my home page, but I just don't see why MT get's this kind of special treatment. That's all.

I'd like to see the occasional hand though.:) I think it's right up there with PA, and would love a RL book. It's Walky is great, but I don't care as much for Willis' art style as I do Gabe's. *shrugs*

Mac Hall, OTOH, I agree, is better in both art and humor, but I was put off on it for a long time this year when it was updated once a week at best. I think it's great and all, and I appreciate all Ian does for it, but part of what I appreciate about PA is that without fail on MWF I get a new PA. I know Ian has the same problems that the rest of us do (like work and classes getting in the way), and I respect that, and I hope he can keep his new schedule into the next school year.

And who said we don't count rants for humor? :-)

I almost always save PA for last when I read comics (and follow the link off RL), because they both almost always brighten my day. Lately, I'm saving Exploitation Now for last, since it is wraping up and, as I said before, Poe is doing a spectacular job.

Anyway, that's just my opinion(TM). You're entitled to your own, unless you live in China. Then you're part of the hive-mind. :)

I, personally, have been reading EN since practically the beginning. It's been impressive to see Poe's style evolve, along with the EN characters and storyline. I was actually saddened by ****'s (in case anyone decides to start reading, I won't spoil it for ya) murder last week. I know that I'll be sad to see EN go, but Poe is, so far, doing an excellent job at bringing about the end.

I'll be one of the first to visit his new comic, Errant Story (domain already registered), when EN ends. I really hope that Poe puts all of EN into a book when the series ends. I'd be more than willing to lay down $20-$25 for a hardbacked EN collection.

More OnTopic, Congrats to Piro. I'll be buying a MT book when it's released. I certainly can't complain about the $8.95 price. I still want Gabe and Tycho to make a PA Year Two book. While MT is decidedly excellent PA is, IMHO, the best web comic out there.

Just ponder to yourself, how many fans own the original trilogy on VHS, the THX enhanced version, and the Special Edition? Or how about any of the above two?
