This was not a VENDOR (Linksys, D-Link, etc, etc) who provided anything back to the community, this was the manufacturer who provided clues.
Nothing ever came back to Madwifi from ASCOM (one of the largest Atheros design "partners"), for example, or from some Taiwanese AP manufacturer, who uses Linux and Atheros in their products.
For them GPL/BSD doesn't make any difference, since they already use close drivers/tools for their products.
Take a look at Senao NL-5354 series of APs. One is running on Linux, another on VxWorks. Linux distro is not important at all, since all that matters is the Atheros driver + their own "iwconfig" type of tool. Plus their CLI, which is also created by them.
Actually, from what I've experienced in real-life, LOSING in a game makes people go ballistic for a moment (not VIOLENT, but 'louder' and so on).
Hell, I've destroyed joysticks and keyboards (Kempstons, if I remember correctly - ah old Amiga days:) because I couldn't pass a level in logic and platform games ("Another World" being a good example:), etc. Coworker broke a keyboard because he couldn't beat my record in Minesweeper.
How many people have ever looked at sourcecode released by vendor? Even better - how many has SEEN any contributions released by vendor that have any significant impact?
Has Realtek ever released source for their wireless driver (for 8181, for example)? Nope. Has Broadcom ever released source for their wireless driver? Nope again.
You want to use Atheros in your AP? Fine. All companies, so far, either cash out $20,000 and get the sourcecode from Atheros, or they subcontract the job (to someone from http://www.atheros.com/partners/AADC.html list). No GPL here.
Not to mention that many Atheros based APs are running VxWorks, not Linux.
Who cares if vendor released a patch that changes some allocation routines (specific for hardware platform their AP runs on) or whatever.
Vendors only care to rollout product ASAP. Nothing else. Most of the time, they roll it out even before it's actually production ready ("we'll fix the bugs as we go" approach).
If FreeBSD allows them to rollout products faster - they'll go with FreeBSD. But something tells me (and it's not part of *BSD vs Linux argument) that they'll stick with Linux, since there are countless wireless-ready development kits/boards available.
Don't think they'll take another route, just because of BSD license.
And then, in near future, some yank is going to wonder "Why Iraqi people hate us so much? We are only helping them." Even if it never gets used in Iraq, the sole fact it was INTENDED to be used there is more than enough.
Of course, it won't be used in the US, since someone might sue them for using it.
Iraqi lives, at the end of the day, are much much cheaper...
It has nothing to do with the quality of their software. It has something important to do with their reliability as a technology resource. If I can't get to their website when I need an upgrade or technical question answered, I'm screwed, no matter how well their SW would work installed on my server if it were working.
Drupal is providing a service, software delivery, to its users. It might not be a business, but businesses depend on it. So it has to act professionally, regardless of its technical "business" status. Their uptime is in the critical path for their users, who depend on access to their website, especially in emergencies.
Are you Drupal user? If yes, then please switch to something else and stop bleething. If not, then please use something else and stop bleething.
You obviuosly have no idea what Drupal is, and the fact they could be down 1 month is meaningless. Most people care if Drupal on THEIR OWN servers is running, not if the Drupal website is running.
But then again, you're a "businessman", and nobody else here is - so you must be the one who collected all the wisdom on this planet...
Where I live, and where I used to go frequently (Asia), I've never seen "DVD-Audio". Not that I looked for it, but I usually browse shops ("both" types of shops;) anytime I can.
I've heard about it before, but really never saw one. Did you? Does it work in standalone DVD player (I guess not)?
Don't you remmeber, this is Slashdot, News for People who Hate America, Stuff about Hating America.
Quit funny. I live in a country that has been under emormous pressure from "international community" to admit doing wrong things, blah, blah. And they did bad things.
And I will always give shit to my govt/country when they do something I don't think is right. at the same time, I see many Americans not being able to handle any comments about how their GOVERNMENT might be doing something wrong.
What's that? Expect others to confirm when they're doing something dodgy, but never expect to be asked to do the same when your govt is in question?
Also called as 'double standards', 'hypocrisy', etc.
Here's a quick question for those people who think the US government shouldn't control the Root DNS servers: When is the last time that they failed?
Actually, US government never controlled root servers. First it was 'geeks', then 'tech companies', and it's still that way. To my knowledge, none of the root servers get ANY funding from governments. There is a whole history and list of servers (with detailed explanation), so go and look it up.
What scares me NOW is the fact that US goverment voiced their opinion on root servers, so NOW I am getting scared that some servers might 'conveniently' fail if/when needed.
Until they got involved "officialy", I had no concerns. People like Paul Vixie know how to maintain root servers, so I don't think US govt needs to get involved in any way...
"This constant ignorant whining of the "the UN is a worthless piece of garbage" kind, is getting on my nerves" Yeah, tell that to the two million Christians that were brutally slaughtered -by hand- by the lovely, peace-loving muslim north in the Sudan: the U.N. Did nothing.
True. They also did nothing when Americans killed untold number of Vietnamese, and also when Americans bombed unreal amount of countries.
Bad UN, bad UN...
As someone already explained, UN != ITU. If you ever worked in telecoms, and had an account at TIES, you'd know ITU != UN in any way...
Can anyone look at the history of the UN and honestly say that they would be any better, rather than a lot worse? Does anyone want the organization that puts the Sudan and other bloody, human rights violating states on its human rights commission to be the ones to regulate who gets a domain name? I sure don't.
Right. I sure love to have country that bombed 27+ countries (sample URL - there are zillion of them), since the end of WW2, in charge of everything. Not to mention the "record" of interferring in everyone else's business/country/politics/etc.
And you get to complain about UN, with such silly arguments?
I'd take UN over USA any day (even if I would compare all the 'sins', UN is really far far far behind). But that's just me.
As a sidenote - you even don't understand what this story is about, if you're bright enough to talk about "controlling who gets a domain name". Additionaly, not all root servers are "controlled" by the US, but that's another story...
I would have fired her too. I would fire anyone who's not able to use a keyboard, or doesn't check their input twice, especially when they are responsible for huge amounts of money.
Then you'd probably also fire just about anyone on this planet, including some of the most brilliant programmers. What - you never saw a program with bugs, where programmer didn't check their input twice?
You probably don't even have a job, when you think you'd fire her.
I know that good manager would rip the skin off the person who authorized use of the new system without giving proper training to employees. Bad manager would fire the employee.
What I really find amusing is how everyone says "Guns don't kill people - people kill people", and yet Supreme Court now seems to say "People don't share copyrighted material - applications do".
So, could we expect Supreme Court to ban guns, even if it has its "legal" uses? I don't think so. Too much money involved, too many people sold their souls already.
People laugh at me when i say that we're all just slaves, and are living in slavery. They laugh, and then bleeth about new rules and laws being passed every day, and yet they think they are "free".
The only freedom that matters is the freedom to be LEFT ALONE.
Quite possibly, only few very rich people (and tribes which we haven't found yet) have that freedom...
Perhaps instead of employing 500-600 hackers to deter a threat that they create to intimidate their own people they should consider giving their people some food so they don't starve to death.
Perhaps instead of approving US$ 500,000,000,000 defence budget to deter a threat they create to intimidate their own people they should consider giving their people some medical care and social security, so they don't sleep in streets (or chose your favourite activity).
Same thing, different package.

Yeah, so? This isn't about what OS is hacked, but what system. And MSN is *big* (MSN passwords can be used for many things).
If linux.com got hacked, it wouldn't matter, since it holds exactly 0 important things for a hacker. They would deface it.
But MSN KR was not defaced, they subtly placed code in order to specifically get passwords.

Please slashdot, you're not doing any justice by harping on Microsoft. Your bias is just disgusting. Why don't you post one of the 1,000,000 Linux defacements or break-ins that happen monthly?
There are 1,000,000 Windows defacements or break-ins that happen monthly, but they don't get reported here either.
The reason is that these people believe/expect that everything on the Internet is free.
Not everyone lives in the US/EU. Not everyone has access to original DVDs like you (probably do), and not everyone thinks "everything on the Internet is free". Some people do it for fun, some because they want to 'try' things, and some because they don't want to pay. And I know a lot of people who will download "Hellboy" (for example, since it was one of the worst movies I've even started watching) and watch 15 minutes of it, but will cash out without thinking to buy Immortel (for example).
Big Mac, at my place, costs around $1.5, which is acceptable since average salary is around $150-200.
Original DVD costs $30-40.
Why did McDonalds decide to 'adapt' prices for the local market (and yet, they are very profitable), but record industry wants to charge people 3rd of their salary, and then complain if those people turn to pirating?
Why can mobile operators adapt prices for local markets, and yet make $25,000,000/year (pure profit)?
But Microsoft can't. They'll only "adapt" prices if you're govt institution or company that "threatens" to switch to Linux.
75% of world population lives in poverty.
And no, I don't buy the argument "if they don't have money, they shouldn't have computers nor DVDs". They should, and they try hard to get them.
As a sidenote - if recording industry thinks that I should have access to latest Britney/Eminem/whatever albums, but not to (for example) Soundtrack from Gattaca - it's their problem. Since I can't find most of the things I want in the CD/DVD shops, I go and download them.
These are many of the same people that believe people are born with the right to pirate their copy of Windows because Microsoft has tons of money.
Blah, blah, blah. I never met anyone thinking like that, and yet I live in a place where 70% of Windows copies are pirated. They mostly pirate it because they can't afford the original (again, MS expects people to pay 99EUR for Windows Home Edition, with average salary of 120-150EUR - amazing).
Why the hell you bleeth about things you know nothing about?
I have a better life than most people here, and I pay for stuff I want/need (when I can find it, or afford it).
But I truly understand those who are not so fortunate, and I am never going to judge them, since I can only *imagine* how it feels.
Unless you've been in their boots, keep your mouth shut and go buy Longhorn.

If Google was human, I would recommend Ballmer to "catch" Google for a specific part of the body. That's just about all they can "catch".
Welcome to the real world and the economic engine that is capitalism.
The world you live in has nothing to do with capitalism anymore.
Capitalism was, MAYBE, present during 1950-60's, but what people are experiencing now is something so deformed it needs a new name.
