They're losing the market, and they're scared. What good TV shows? What good movies?
I don't even watch TV anymore. And when I do, I put some music channel, or FTV, or something that doesn't 'distract' too much. I'm especially tired of all the 'reality shows' and similar crap - people who don't have their own lives watch other people not having lives either. Amusing...
I started watching Chinese (watched 2 today), Korean and other non-US movies because I'm tired of Hollywood sh*t. Was left speechless with effects and camera shots in some Chinese movies, as well as stories (real refreshment). I just can't stand Hollywood movies anymore, where everyone has some 'childhood trauma', or has lost wife/child/dog, etc.
So, if I have to choose between "no broadcast flag, no Hollywood spectacles" or "broadcast flag, and we control your TV" - by all means I recommend MPAA to go ahead and NOT show all those "great shows and movies".
BitTorrent? Need I point out that file sharing was pioneered by Napster? Yep, another app that copied a closed source product.
Although I could write pages about other examples you've written, this one really strikes me.
I had an Amiga in 1991 and was sharing files. You know, files could be shared via modem, or on X.25 as well. But something tells me you might not know what X.25 is...
Free software (or opensource) was 'born' for a reason, and that was not to be innovative. If you look for innovative, look at academia. They don't do PR, though, so it's easy to miss them.
He can't get rid of "reverse engineering" phrase for the last few months, and recently we found out that "reverse engineering" which occured with BitKeeper was a 'help\n' (or was it 'help\r\n'?) string on an open port.
Might be that certain companies canceled BK licenses, since they don't need them anymore to access kernel tree, so he got pissed off.
" the fact that the federal reserve isnt owned by the usa, and every president that attempted to change that died under odd circumstances or was assassinated"
Someone forgot their foil hat today.
Why?
Federal Reserve is not owned by the USA Government (nor is majority owned by US banks). It is, basically, privately owned company (which earns money; well, taxpayers' money).
If *this* is the project Larry was complaining about so much, I can't wait to hear what he has to say now.
Larry, is THIS the reverse engineering you were talking about? Stealing your ideas? Making OSS version of BitKeeper? Blah, blah.
There were so many cases of people making opensource software talking to proprietary back-end (getting stock quotes with tool via TCP, for example, instead of using Java/Windows clients), and noone really made so much noise.
I have no respect anymore for BitKeeper and Larry if this is all Tridge was "reverse engineering".
God forbid that anyone except Yanks could think how they're best in something.
"Best nation in the world", "best economy", "best this, that" - every day. And yet, you are threatened when someone else thinks how they got something best.
Really amusing... And Russians don't have the rest of the world supporting their economy (as someone else does), so that's one of the reasons their economy suck.
Don't get so threatened if someone else thinks they might be best in something...
One problem though. N. Korea is not democratic. So the power of the entire country and it's militery might is in the hands of a few people.
I always wanted to understand something.
What is the difference of N. Korean people not wanting military to be used against S. Korea (for example), and Spanish/British/Italian/etc. people not wanting military used against Iraq (for example)? Get real, in democracy is military also in control of few people. You don't put top generals in place if they're not "your men". Anywhere.
What does democracy have to do with it, when in democracy it all takes one prime minister to decide military goes to Iraq - and thing is done.
The Atomic Bomb was unproven, scary, risky and sci-fi, but it saved the lives of an estimated 1 Million Marines/U.S. Army, and an untold number of Japanese.
(Yes, I would argue that it saved Japanese lives, based on Iwo Jimi, Okinawa, etc, Japanese soilders would have fought for every inch of Japan, and likely would have destroyed the country in the process, but this is an arguement for another post...)
Brainwashing works, it would seem.
In 1999, NATO bombed Serbia. They were also bragging about 'human war', 'precision strikes' and 'military targets'.
In reality, they got a chance to test new weapons. So they did it.
They used graphite bombs in order to take down power plants. It worked for 2-3 days, then trick was found, and it took few hours to clean up mess after graphite bomb. What NATO did? They used real bombs and hit the power plants.
So, how can any military option be about 'saving lives', when it has the same end result? (in this case, power plants providing electricity to people - destroyed; in Japan, impact was much more horrible)
But I guess one of the hardest things to do is to admit horrible things your leaders/military/nation have done (as is also, noticably, case in Balkans for the past 10 years - for example). So, there is always a "logical explanation" which justifies those actions...
Does anyone REALLY think we are going to let N. Korea to continue to exist in it's current regime.
Who is "we"? Gonna solve it the same way Iraqi people were 'freed'?
As a sidenote - they already have nukes. What makes you think whatever "you" do will make those nukes go away?
USSR dissolved, but dozens od thousands of nuclear warheads didn't disappear.
At the end, anyone who understands the concept of "nuclear winter" knows that even crazy Koreans (or crazy Bush, or crazh whoever) won't start nuclear war.
There's an extremist fringe of Linux loonies who hang out on forums and are disrespectful and threatening because you disagree with them...That can hurt the Linux community.
I have no problems disagreeing with someone (we agree to disagree).
However, when mediocre person titles itself with 'expert' tag (and is obviously not an expert in that area) and starts telling crap - I have no respect, whatsoever, for such person.
Not when it comes to M$ vs Linux vs Mac vs whatever - not when it comes to any other matter.
As much as I hate it, there's still a lot of money in Spam it appears, and I'm sure that there's quite a few countries who would turn a blind eye to the problem for the right cash (I'm looking at you China!)
Not a problem. It is rather easy (for me, at least) to block whole A/B classes in China, since I certainly don't visit any Chinese sites, nor do I expect any Chinese emails. It won't affect me a bit.
However, it's bit harder to block IP ranges with dedicated server companies, since there are many useful sites stuck (unintentionally) in ranges where spammers operate.
So, if spammers end up spamming Chinese users only, they'll end up being prosecuted in China, which is (I'd say) worse than 9 years in jail;)
9 years! That's an awful long time if you think about it. Especially for doing something that's pretty much being a mass annoyance.
I couldn't find how much he *cashed in* with his activities, but I'm fairly positive it also influenced the judge's decision. If he collected $10M, for example, I'm sure it would look much different than if he earned $2,000. On the other hand, jury and judge might have been spammed by him as well, so...:)
Yes, 9 years is a long time. What bothers me is not the fact he's got 9 years, but that many rapists/murderers get much less.
Did he defraud people with suger pills as well or something? 9 years in prison for annoying people seems a bit harsh...
It is VERY annoying though, and he did irritate millions.
Although I agree 9 years is bit too much, I don't think he got 9 years because he 'annoyed people'. He got 9 years because he 'annoyed very big companies'.
The assistant replies "Have you tried Windows XP?"
"Yes", the young man answered.
"Excellent", the assistant said. "Because without it there is no way you can play all the latest and coolest games out there."
Damn. Didn't realize Playstation 2 was running Windows XP...
A comparision side by side of the features of all these programmes. Can I handle my 2 Gb of PST files with Evolution and Kontact?
Your question is in the same league as this: Can Outlook handle my 1.4GB of MH mails?
Don't use stupid examples.

I mean honestly, the OSS community has not treated him with any respect, despite the fact that he's a good friend of Linus.
I keep repeating that he lost my respect the moment it turned out "reverse engineering" of BitKeeper was a 'help' command on BitKeeper server.
Don't know about others, but I'll never forgive him that, because it was flat out LYING!
I hate liars, and I hate people who always present themselves as 'victims'.
He's really acting as an idiot.

I never understood why movie industry doesn't release movies on DVD at the same time they show up in theater?
I don't go to movie theaters, so why do I have to wait months before being able to see the movie?
Could someone explain it to me?
Thanks.
Makes you wonder if Eben Moglen did anybody a favour in bringing people's attention to Wine's potential patent problems.
Better sooner than later.
Hiding and hoping "it won't happen" will not do any good.
Damn, it's 5:45AM, and I might have woke up half of the neighbourhood :)))
:)
Brilliant!
No we don't. This (java) version works perfectly already. Why does this _need_ to be ported?
Erm... because you can't run it in the background over SSH session on another server through 56kbit link? Or just choose any other reason...

What free country?

EMP
This is waste of money, and it certainly will be too 'dodgy' to deploy (one mistake could cause incredible mess).

Although article (and title, especially) doesn't explain anything, I can only way "So what"?
I'll keep on using GPL v2 for my software, as will many others.
If someone (for whatever reason) chooses to use v3 (in whatever form it will be) - so be it.
This doesn't look like anyone is forcing me to publish my sources under GPL v3.

At this point of time, I bet they'll risk safety of the crews, because they have nothing to lose.
They have to prove they can fly to outer space again, and since they already look bad, they can't lose much (disaster here, disaster there).
If they make it alright, it will be a morale boost (and political points for certain politicians).
I bet BitKeeper's CEO or employees use Samba, and I'm sure they love it (as millions do).
Now, I presume *that* reverse engineering was ok, but damn, how could anyone dare rev eng THEIR product...
Go figure.
