Agree or disagree with what the NSA is doing, Alexander has some set of cojones to speak in front of an unfriendly mob. Hell hath no fury like a room of sweaty nerds! Reply to This Share
Huh? Are you silly or what?
Politicians do it every bloody day, speaking in front of unfriendly crowd is of no importance to them.
It would be nice if tablet designers, OS designers, and app coders stopped treating tablets like media consumption devices and started treating them like actual replacements for people who need to do actual work.
They have. It's called the Surface PRO.
I have one, and it works like a charm. It's a Core i5 running Metro + Win 8 pro. Runs full Office and has access to all network resources. At my desk it has its desktop extended to another monitor (try doing that with a f*cking iPad) with attached keyboard & mouse. Away from my desk it's got a detachable proper clicky keyboard and a nifty stylus.
All my colleagues carry two devices (iPad + Notebook) - I carry one. Every time I pull it out at a meeting or at the airport people say "oooh... what's *that*?" The RT noise is distracting people from what is otherwise a very cool machine.
Before I tried out Eve, I thought these epic space battles were technological breakthroughs. At the time, I was playing WoW was was restricted to 40 players and some mobs up at once. When I actually played Eve, I was quickly disillusioned. There are not many real-time controls in the game. You pick an action, then when the game decides when it's time, it executes it. It's a queuing system and it's nearly turn-based, like Civilization. You aren't controlling your space craft in real time. I am not as experienced as a lot of you guys are and you may have other input, but I quickly gave it up because it was boring as hell to do something then wait 10 seconds until it completed.
Hahahaha.
Sure thing mate, orbit and F1, right?
You haven't played EVE at all if you think that you don't control your ship in real-time.
Personally I have no idea why people would want the old start menu back. On a large monitor it was a pain to use, while the new start screen has all of the same features and then some with a much larger and easier-to-use area for icons. If someone could accurately describe all of the legitimate downsides (not "it looks like a tablet, therefore it sucks"), I would appreciate that a lot because all I hear is "they changed it therefore it sucks"-type whining.
Oh dear, just look at all those anonymous cowards who don't see any anyone would want Start menu back.
I am willing to bet that if Henry Stimpson knew the consequences of closing down the equivalent of the NSA in 1929, he would have sacrificed his "Gentlemen do not read each others mail" mantra in a heartbeat. In fact, he did just that in WW2 because he came to realize the value of intelligence gathering activities.
I personally hope that GCHQ and the NSA are gathering as much intelligence as possible. What is needed is a boundary on who that intelligence is passed on to and used, not how much is gathered.
You reckon that everyone should lose their rights so that "intelligence agencies" could gather as much data as possible? And we should make it as easy as possible for them too?
this is what i dont understand...why is there a "need" for all of this. they arent stopping "terrorism" nor are they really using it in a way thats stopping any major crimes. dont get me wrong, i am weird and 100% opposed to all of this. but who are they protecting with all of this data mining?
Because that is what leadership does when people lose ability to control them. No matter what they tell you, they always want absolute power. People that don't want some kind of power don't get into politics. It really is simple as that.
For a very long time, I couldn't understand why Americans were supposed to have arms and why it was even in constitution. However, now I really understand why it's there (too late to do anything, though), and I also realize that people that created US constitution were so much more wiser than any 'leaders' that exist on this planet today.
I'm giving MS the benefit of a doubt. They may not have all the details right and is still working them out. Their messaging also has not been very good lately so one group might be saying one thing and another group saying another.
5 months before the release, they "don't may not have all the details right".
Huh? If you want legal access to movies and music there are a plethora of distribution sites; Amazon, Netflix, itunes, etc.
I mean, what really hurts is that Amazon are cunts and don't bother informing you about geo restriction until you actually try to watch/download something (they let you go through trial setup and also set auto-upgrade option on, even though you might not be able to use Prime at all - I presume they'd just charge me $79 after a free 'trial' if I didn't disable this 'feature'). I just tried it again, and still works the same. Argh.
And they still wonder why many people download "free" things from the trackers/etc? It's not because they are free, but these brainless droids still haven't figured that part out.
Has it ever occurred to any of the fourteen-year-olds who comment on this site, that this individual has committed treason, has limited our governments' ability to challenge people who wish us ill and fight our corner for us? What will happen when we're all measurably poorer when the Chinese make off with all our most valuable IP, or we are attacked and weakened from within from the Islamist hordes who threaten us?
Or will there just be 2000 paranoid and clueless comments about black helicopters and Bilderburgers as usual?
I didn't know the US legal system worked that way. Does that mean Bradley Manning could have avoided all that hassle by simply finding himself not guilty on all charges?
You can't even understand what he says. But you still post your 'thoughts'.
Amusing.
hint: he's not talking about laws and prosecution, there is something much more important than that
The military has bigger guns, but the members of the military are citizens too. Asking the military to kill their friends and family and neighbors is not so simple a task as you might think.
it appears that you are not aware how brainwashing works:(
Microsoft owns both gaming and workplace PC's. Nothing is going to take that from them. Tablets aren't meant to replace PC's, they're just too different kind of devices. Microsoft has nothing to worry about.
Number of Macs in 'workplace' has increased dramatically. Windows based PCs are not the only 'choice' for small/medium sized companies anymore. Enterprises still, of course, have to run Windows. For how long, we'll see.
And when it comes to gaming PCs - you are just being funny.
You mean like the hundreds of millions of users it has and who still value the service to the point where major established companies are bending over backwards to fit Facebook into their marketing schemes? Huh. Weird, I can't tell if that's more misanthropic or solipsistic of you.
Idiots who don't understand fiat currency make me sad. Basically we dillute the money supply as a proportion of the GDP. In other words we base our money off of our collective labor rather than some arbitrary metal we deem rare enough to care about.
Hahahaha. No wonder they keep printing money, when common Joe believes in what you just said.
If by "most games" you are including simple games like angry birds, then yes. But most action games have complexity added up to the limit of the platform. AI and pathfinding are still often crippled by lack of cpu available to the programmers.
No, they are not.
Game studio still spend much more time making metal shine or glove looking 'real', than improving AI and working on dynamically generated content for maps/etc.
When every console you sell costs you money, this seems like an extremely natural evolution. This is an excellent way for Microsoft to hemorage less money on consoles while having extra horse power than can be used for actual money-making purposes. This reduces risk.
Selling hardward below cost is becoming unsustainable. It has led to diversity in the game market dropping off. This writing has been on the wall for a while.
Yeah, those 300,000 servers in data center are free.

Wow.
You have a laptop.
Welcome to 1999.

Does this mean a self-signed certificate is more secure than a commercial one?
I have spent almost 10 years of my life trying to explain people why self-signed certs are much more secure.
People don't care.
But back to the story... Okay, so a e-wallet startup got some venture capital. Why is this news, exactly?
Probably because it has been paid for. So much for the "news".

Are you being serious?
10-15 years ago, people called me "conspiracy theorist".
Now they are apologizing.
Just because you can't believe someone would do something, doesn't mean it's not being done. Keep that in mind.

Sorry, Netflix is not available in your country yet.
Amazon Instant Video on Samsung devices is currently available in all 50 states of the U.S., District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
I am not even going to try iTunes (since I don't own any Apple devices and I don't watch movies on my computer).

Serious question.
Are you out of your mind?

...it has to be stated:
This man is a hero.
Being able to share your games with friends and family (up to 10) is pretty awesome and in no way possible for normal people today.
I've been doing this 20 years ago.
Yeah, it is pretty awesome new invention by Microsoft.
The military has bigger guns, but the members of the military are citizens too. Asking the military to kill their friends and family and neighbors is not so simple a task as you might think.

I find it incredible that self-confessed geeks have such an issue with this very small speed-bump that actually benefits many others who use it.
It benefits who, exactly?
Random Windows 8 tablet user?
You mean like the hundreds of millions of users it has and who still value the service to the point where major established companies are bending over backwards to fit Facebook into their marketing schemes? Huh. Weird, I can't tell if that's more misanthropic or solipsistic of you.
Millions of flies can not be wrong either.

Facebook is an american company
freedom of speech, even speech we dont like is legal
i feel bad for the girl being bullied but i dont blame anyone for their death who kills themselves except for them.
Well, they are doing business in italy.
As DOJ has showed us recently, if a random packets get to your country, you have jurisdiction over the country packet came from.
Thus, italy has jurisdiction.
Easy.
Until China starts to face real responses?
And what makes you think it's really China, in the first place?
Because someone said so? :)

Because people like shiny things.
