Ya, Mozilla might be an alright browser, but not for 5 years worth of work. Everytime I've tried it, I've had nothing but problems with it.

And what if there were no guns out there, without this? Then what?
I doubt they developed this to be an option. Probably more along the lines of a prototype, of what can be developed. If ALL guns in the (near) future, have some of these technologies, the world would be a much safer place.

It's kind of funny, we just watched a video yesterday, and this morning about the history of the automobile, and the impact of it, in our Social Impact of Technologies class.
One of the things that they showed, was the actual display, of this "future" that A.C. Radebaugh invisioned. City cores were never backed up with traffic (if you think traffic is bad downtown now, you should have seen it back in the 30's), and the highways were built ontop of each other, all going in the same direction, so that traffic flowed freely, instead of having traffic jams. Also, highways at this time, were very rare, which makes this vision even more impressive.
If anyone is in the Philly area, it'd be something to check out, that's for sure.

Obviously bowing to record and movie industry pressure ... I remember not to long ago where OptimumOnline ran TV ads touting the ability to grab music from the Net."
K, first off, I don't see what's really so "disturbing" about this. You can't (illegally) send ppl files over P2P. And how is this a big deal? They're still letting you download files. I bet a huge % of you's, already have the "disable sharing" feature on. And I also bet, that if you seen what % of bandwidth your ISP is using (and how much they have to pay for this), to support your file swapping, you'd do the same thing.
If ppl didn't abuse it, there probably wouldn't be a problem, but that isn't happening, and that's why ISPs are doing such things as this, or "capping" your connection.
As for the "I remember ... OptimumOnline ran TV ads touting the ability to grab music from the Net.", well, you still can.

I get a kick out of you's Linux g33ks ... if something isn't free, you's complain about it. Sorry to say, but everything does come with a price.

K, first off, if your 3 year old is writing papers, and talking to friends online, then I think you shouldn't be worrying what OS to be using, you should be worrying about what University to send him to.

"... and introduce them to something less expensive (free) and more reliable."
Just curious, is something good, not worth paying for anymore? I'm not saying pay for XP, but it seems that the main reason why people switch to Linux, is that their too cheap to actual pay a few $$$, to support something.

"I'm rebooting this machine probably four and five times a week, not to mention the forever problem of lockups and hangs which seem to happen during the times where the 3 year-old is using the machine."
#1 Remember the says of rebooting 4-5 a day?
#2 You answered your own question ... the problems mostly happen when ya have your 3 year old playing around with it.

"I know the crashes are mainly due to the older games that the kids play which are not totally compatible with XP, but hey, they USED to run just fine under Windows98."
I've been using XP since it came out, and have yet to have any probs with "older" games. Just be lucky it ain't a Mac, then every new version of the OS, wouldn't be compatible with the last one.
And now you wanna switch to Linux? Have fun getting most of those running under it.

"Also, being the cheap bastard that I am, I'm looking at all the money we've spent on Windows XP, Office and all the games over the years"
Well, there's money well spent. You mention yourself, that you're a cheap bastard, but are willing to throw away the $$$ you already spent on Office and XP (assuming that you did buy them, which I'm now doubting you did).

"a standard ISDN line is fine for internet access." I dunno about you's down south, but up here, 64kbps ISDN, costs more that our dsl or cable internet access. Also, with ISDN, you need another phone line, which costs even more. So personally, ISDN, isn't even an option. Here's an example of some of the pricings: Single Channel ISDN: Setup Fee: $220 Monthly Rate: $280 Dual Channel ISDN: Setup Fee: $220 Monthly Rate: $400 So, if they can get broadband cheaper, it would allow more business to get online, or get a faster connection online, which I doubt would hurt the economy ...

(Deals Direct.ca) And those are CDN prices, so the US prices are like what, 1/3 of that? And if you're gonna say, well, that's OEM, you don't get the support that you would with the full retail, well, look at what Suse is offering for their $129 version "The recommended retail price for one workstation is $ 129.00 and includes detailed documentation as well as 90 days of installation support." Just installation support, nothing else. Linux, from what I remember, was suppose to be "free", charging $129 for a few extra things, that don't fully work yet, is not worth it. I'm sticking to what I said earlier, I'll pay the extra $30 and am sure it'll work with all the programs that I want to use.

Suse is hoping to add to their current client base, by expanding the use of Linux. Linux is not just for the hardcore g33k anymore, it's for people who want a choice. I will agree tho', Suse is banking on lots, by giving it a $129.00 price tag. If I want an OS to run Windows programs, for that price, I'm better off with sticking to Windows. The price has to be lower, to make it more attractive to make the switch.
