"Most of the big name DJ's I've seen rarely if ever bother to scratch... Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Timo Mass, Paul Van Dyk, etc"
The ones you have names off are all mainstream Trance DJs. With Trance, there is no scratching. But what about hiphop, and various types of house (Chicago, UK), Jungle, Breaks or Booty? The DJs that play these genres of music do scratch.
And to have a piece of hardware that could plug into a laptop is a great asset for club DJs, who don't want to carry in a bunch of milk crates filled with vinyl, or want to play custom tracks that.
That Mandrake Controversy link was available a while back, and I've already copy/pasted it in my post, the last time this was mentioned.
And as I said before, I don't think this is going to be that big of a deal. These are not pop up, in your face ads. During the install, there will be a few non intruding ads that are displayed. These are not full screen ads. And these ads are from companies that Mandrake thinks are relevant, and geared towards the Mandrake user. Also the other ads are basically just links in your browser, which can be easily removed.
And like i've said before, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Companies and Programmers/Developers can't survive on giving things out for free (yes, you can buy the box set, but what % of people who have linux at home actually paid for it...?). Somehow, they do have to generate money from somewhere to keep on going.
I personally welcome these ads, if it means a "free" high quality linux (compared to Lindows, and a few others where you have to pay, and there is no free downloads).
Hi Slashdotters Yes, I am number challenged. The proposal for a levy in the Blame Canada article should have been 1/10 of a cent a MB. And I should have included a 3 - 5 Gig cap for this levy.
To those who are complaining now about it, I bet you never even realized that the tax was already included.
"1/10 of a cent a MB" doesn't raise the cost of CDs up that much, since I can still get a spindle of 100 48x CDs for $31.50 ($25US?).
One last thing.. it seems that the majority of people on here are too cheap for anything. Whether it be buying CDs, or software. If it ain't free, it's crap. Well, if people didn't get paid to make these things that you want, they wouldn't be around. And I'm pretty sure a lot of you have bitched and complained about not getting paid enough at work, or the lack of paying jobs out there. You try volunteering your time, and living off of it. Even "Free Software" isn't free anymore, somewhere, someone is paying.
I'll agree, that CDs cost way more than they should, and business models have to keep up with today and our technology, BUT, the law is the law, and downloading copyrighted music is illegal, whether you have a copy of the CD or not. The only way to have a legal mp3 of copyrighted work, is if you copied the CD yourself.
And so are those C64s, Amigas, and the Apple I... but that hasn't stopped people from "hacking" those... I'm sure a lot of people do it more for the challenge than anything else. Like, do you really think that the C64 running a webserver is useful at all?
And to who ever said that hacking an XBox should be legal, well, maybe so, but the law is the law, and therefor it isn't legal. M$ doesn't make $$$ on sales of the XBox, they make their $$$ on the games. SO if everyone goes and buys an XBox, and decides to run Linux on it, well, that kind of beats the purpose of selling it in the first place.
Also, a lot of you are hypocrites... all that's ever on here is M$ bashing, but yet not you're crying 'cause you can't use a M$ product (to run linux)? Why not go get a PS2, and get the linux kit for it... oh ya, I forgot, you have to pay for the linux kit...
One last thing, how many people cried foul when Sony went after the Aido (???) hacker, or Nintendo and Sony going after the console hackers? Not too many, but as soon as something has to do with M$, everyone is jumping all over them.
For those of you who are too lazy to go to the Mandrake link...
We'd like to explain briefly why we have done this and why you shouldn't worry.
0) There won't be any ad in the screensavers in Mandrake 9.2
There will be one paid-ad in the installation procedure, and a few paid-links in bookmarks.
1) Ads are selected and won't be intrusive.
Our advertizing plan is only offered to MandrakeSoft partners - we select only ads that make sense as complementary Linux solutions. Additionally, ads won't be intrusive (no pop-up windows) and can be removed easily.
2) There have been ads in Mandrake Linux for years.
Maybe you didn't notice it, but in the installation procedure and in browser's bookmarks, there have been many links to Mandrake products, the GNU project, many Open Source projects and so on. In Mandrake 9.1 there was the first "commercial" link to a technical book content provider. Nobody was annoyed, we didn't get any feedback about that.
3) Free Software and business model.
As we are firmly committed to Open Source/Free Software, we want to keep on exploring business models that are compatible with this spirit.
This doesn't seem as bad as you people are making it seem...

And speaking of NT4 and Alpha, I have a magazine around here (PCComputing?), which has NT4 running on a Alpha 500Mhz (when intel was still at 200Mhz) on the cover...
But if we all (the countries that is) worked together on a common goal, then who gets the recognition?
The reason why the US (supposably) went to the moon, was to show that they were superior to any other country (USSR).
Asking all the countries to work together, would be like asking M$ and the Linux community to work together, on a superior OS and software, ones that are easy to use for the common user, but yet powerful and stable, but that'll never happen. M$ wants to own it all, they don't want to share the spotlight with anyone else.
First off... the USB 2.0... is that "Full Speed", or "High Speed" USB? I'm going to assume that it's the real USB 2.0, but then again, we all were assuming that 2.0 was really 2.0 before, and not an early version with a new name.
Secondly, how would a 64Bit 2Ghz (with a 1Ghz System Bus) compare to an AMD, or an Intel chip running at 2Ghz, or what would it be equal to (Can you call the 2Ghz G5 a G5 3000+?
And the PCI-X... again, I'm going to assume that this is PCI Express?

Could this also mean the announcement of a x86 version of Mac OS X? Since there have been rumours that Apple has a version of OS X that is designed for the PC, but is being hesitant on releasing it... as of yet.

One last thing, why is it that copying a song off of the radio (or any analog source) legal, besides the fact (that if i read it correctly) that the law says so, as well as with a few other forms of multimedia?

Just look at their next OS, the whole GUI, and the way it works has been redone.
By eliminating IE as a standalone product, no one can really try to sue them for bundling the Browser with the OS, because they no longer bundle it together, they made the 2 (OS & Browser) become 1.
