One problem is that your transfer method will degrad over distance. Even the fasted van will not get the data where it has to go in the time it will get there on the Internet (or Internet2, to be picky). Assuming the Internet latency and the vans speed are constant, for any distance, there will be a data capacity for the van (i.e. amount of data stored, i.e. number of backup tapes) such that if the van travels with that amount, upon arrival, both Internet transfer and van transfer would reflect the same amount of data. Any distance greater than that (unless the van's speed is greater than that of the data transmission speed) will show a degradation in the van's performance. That being said... keep in mind that data transfer is not only used to deliver static information. Much 'talk' that goes on with data is dynamic. For a simple example, think of a file request and delivery. The van must first travel across the country with the request. This will take the same amount of time as if it were transfering 100TB of data. This request is negligable on the Internet. So, the total transaction (request and response) will take twice as long as the original described transmission. The Internet transaction was unaffected. Now try this logic with some kind of real time system. As funny as this all sounds, there is still much to be said for good old fasioned sneaker net.
Why? Did you ever try looking inside of your vacuum cleaner? If anything, I would expect space to be full of pennies, pens and missing G.I. Joe weapons.
OK.. I can not "read the article before posting"; It's down. Big time.
I was just wondering what it means for something to be "totally flat". Does that mean that there is nothing "unflat" about it? Does it mean that it can be no flatter? Or, is that like "Totally Phlat, (with a - p h, man)"? Or, might it be that in this "totally flat light source" it is the light itself that is totally flat, which says nothing about the source?
Flat is relative. I have seen some "flat" leds before. You can always make a led flatter, when does it become "totally" flat?
Ok, I have beaten this to death. I started out 70% serious.
As a condition of sale, the successful bidder will have to execute an agreement warranting that they will use the aircraft for static exhibition and educational purposes only.
Educational Purposes. What about LEARNING to fly it? It doesn't say you can't fly. You can exhibit it statically (i.e. not fly it), and use it for educational purposes. Just choose the latter!!
"it's almost absurd to compare a $2 billion software maker with a $25 billion diversified media giant.

money Gordon hints could be used to expand into movies or music. In any event, Probst is clearly way beyond thinking of EA as merely a creator of software toys. "Our goal," he says with no hint of self-consciousness, "is to become the greatest entertainment company ever.
So, given the quoted valuation differences, and EA's stated goal, my question is.. how hard would it be for Disney to make EA an "offer they can't refuse"?
Maybe the next version of Sim City is going to include a big fat Epcot Center monument!!
FBI purchases $5 million worth of X10 wireless cams to use in the hunt for Whitey. This way, we see fewer Ads, X10 sells some cameras (other than for use as a wireless choo-choo cam), and the FBI comes closer to thinking they are gonna nab bulger.
Wow, I can just imagine these ads spreading from busting a mob leader to fighting terror. If they can't trick us into clicking, they will implicate us instead!!
"You're either with us, or against us. You're either clicking on Banner Ads, or you're clicking on terrorism. To block pop-ups is to block our crusade on evil"
Symonette, for instance, bought a $150 Siemens phone that "speaks" the caller's name and number, so he won't actually have to get out of bed to learn who's calling.
It seems like a computer should be able to do anything that these gadgets can do. I was wondering was if there were an open API for voice modem operations, that included call-id/call-waiting capabilities. And if so, why is it that such software is not freely available. There may be some barrier that I fail to see. I would appreciate any input on this.
that learning from OCW is not the same as taking a course. Granted, someone who is motivated enough to learn on their own will still benefit greatly from this. However, remember that the courses themselves will not be available through the OCW sie. From the FAQ "Rather, the goal of MIT OCW is to provide the content that supports an MIT education". While the readings themselves will not be available, sylabii (SP?), lecture notes (and most usefully) assignments will be. This is still contingent, of course on the level of participatory initiative that is undertaken by faculty and assistants. Offering materials through OCW is purely voluntary.
OCW is more geared towards faculty of other institutions who want a guide in developing a curriculum. Still, independant learners are encouraged to take advantage.
On a sidenote, while currently working for MIT obtaining reproduction permissions for course handouts, it appears to me that copyright is one of OCW's hurdles. While copyright is currently on the verge of redefinition, a lot of thought has to be put into the formalities of offering free content on-line.
With visual steganography, even though we would be unable to decode a message, would it still be possible to detect it?
I would imagine that changing pixel tones ever so slightly would create at imbalance in the tone distribution, making solid-color areas slightly uneven. This may be undetectable to the naked eye, but software may be able to see it. And, wouldn't compression normalize like colors anyway?
If this is true (I don't know) I guess a way around it would be to embed smaller messages in larger images, placing only a single character in a given "color zone". Maybe an image with a more robust color scheme could be seen as suspicious.
I can't help but think that if I were a bulk mailer, and this caught on, it would make physical mailing much more valuable to me. A person would be more likely to look at the junk I send them, if there were less of it in their box. Real bulkmailers are likely to catch on to this pretty quick. It might have an effect not unlike wehat happens when everyone decides to take a shortcut to beat the traffic.
Also, think about the tactics used to make junk mail look official. That goes out the window with eMail.
It would be nice to save paper, though. Then again, one thing I like to do is to mail back the business reply envelopes empty.
I had an idea for a P2P screen saver, where you design an A-Life creature, and set it free. It will then roam around, and interact with other creatures from other screen savers. They might fight or fall in love. Who knows. There was more to it, but it was a while ago.
I know that the Game Cube can use GBA as controllers. I am not sure what the interface protocol is like, though. Do you think that it might be possible to make custom GBA carts for Cube games, that provide enhancements (cheats, etc) to a game playing on the Cube?
I can't wait to check out the pics, but do I even need to TRY and see if the site has been Slashdotted? I guess I will browse through here for a mirror first, so I won't contribute to the problem!
Funny thing is, this still happens. The guy got bagged, and still, I just tried typing in that URL, and sure enough, was still bombarded with porn. A f'ing kids site?!? Legal or not, that guy is a jerk. I hope HE doesn't have any kids.
And ironically, I probably just made him a half cent. But maybe I am eligable for returns on a class action suit!!
I admit.. I am lazy. I didn't use spell check (I'm not even going to bother using it here). I admit, that I am a space-brain, since I should not have HAD to use spell check. It is patheitc, I know! I would say that about 80% of the replies to my comments are about my typos, spelling, etc! I don't feel "to" bad. I know many brain-dead people who are terrific spellers.
The best one was when I replied to a Slashdot story that had an F'd up link. So, I corrected it. Incorrectly.
Way to go on "grammer". I thought it was intentional!
I normally just read replies to my posts, but this is a slow news Sunday (on slashdot anyway).
I don't know why everyone was so worried that the whole IT world would skip out to go watch Episode II.
How can this hurt the economy? The largest pool of unemployed labor is out spending money!
Yes, I am a CS guy. Yes, I am unemployed. Yes, I spent $8.50 to see AOTC. Yes, I payed to much for refreshments.

I have had the same AOL account since 1995. Since two years ago, I have had DSL. I only kept AOL for nostalgia purposes (I know... stupid), and in case my DSL went down. I tried to cancel three months ago. They reeled me back though, by giving me three free months. Hell, try to cancel AOL if you have no intention of doing so, just to get free months!!
Anyway.. it was not difficult. You just don't answer their questions, or give brief answers when they ask why. Keep saying, please cancel my account. It only took me three minutes. Is that a record.
Oh, and by the way, if you go to keyword "Cancel" You get some info including a fax # and a mailing address. I would be interested to know if anyone has cancelled via fax, and if the were STILL able to find a way to argue with you!!...

All sorts of interesting legal wrinkles here: you're buying a computer which contains data that you cannot legally access.
I don't see much of a difference between this and software demos that are made up of the full version and only need a registration key to be unlocked.
You are ripping open the doors of Communism!

That sounds interesting. I am curious if anyone out there can point out some 3d interfaces fot the PC,
Well, Yahoo does allow this. I don't like HTML in eMail either. Their filter does not apply to my EMail.. I tried.
