Actually, I don't thinkt that's the right arguement.. you see, if you're calculating that 400,000 people are going to pay to come (to offset the price of construction and art). That will happen regardless of how many people are coming in through the back door. They will pay more because they feel it's worth it. (ie: Prada shoes on Thailand's Kao San Road cost 2$, but people who want essentially the same thing but *properly* will get them from the prada store at 250$).

The way it SHOULD work is that each person pays what they think the art is due; that is to say, some people who think it's fantastic will pay 100$ and some who think it's crap will pay 2$. That is why software piracy is great. I've stolen software. I've bought some of what I've stolen, and not bought other stuff.. which has subsequently been deleted from my stash.

Thing is though, when I was in University there wasn't ANY WAY I could ever afford MatLab or MS Server 2000, or any of the other stuff I learned to use, but I'm (relatively) rich now and can afford it, and will pay. Seems to me that software companies are REALLY shooting themselves in the foot here. Most pirates aren't the reselling kind, they're the kind that will spend 100s of hours getting into pirating groups to get wares that a normal person would just work and pay (and probably at a lower time cost).

I just went through this exact same debate. I chose to dig out all my old negatives. I called up my local university. They were more oblidging, and allowed me to use their equipment for an extremely trivial cost ($10 / day). I had access to a wicked UMAX flatbed capable of scanning over 100 negs at a time; with photoshop on a dual-G4 for cropping and cutting. I scanned at an effective 2400 DPI, saved in PNG at about 800K a file; 1000 pictures took me about six hours - 800 Megs worth of pictures.

I've got all my prints still - but scanning pictures is _so_ much more a pain than negs. See if you can get a flat bed. Oh; and choose a bit-depth, size and format first..

I've been wondering about this for a while now, so I think I'll post here.. maybe someone can help me out.

I live in a sea-side town. One of the popular arguements for environment efficiency around here is that an increase in global tempratures will result in the melting of polar ice caps. The melting will cause an increase in the water level such that towns like mine will become submerged.

My problem is this: Water in a frozen state (especially that with salt content) is of greater volume than in a liquid state. While some of the volume can be discounted as the ice floats, the ice within the water will melt and reduce the total volume of the water in total.

Am I crazy or would that mean the global water level would be lowered?

Part of my work for a certain Canadian government agency was to compare tax rates in the US and Canada. It's a REALLY hard thing to calculate! We concluded that the tax rates (calculating for utility / dollar spent) were approximately equal (with a 1-3% margin).

This story on Wired (06/08/00) talkes about the difference in tax rates for companies, and reasons techies might want to move 'up north'. (a counter arguement can be found in the Canadian Bankers Report).

The Canadian government is trying to make Canada a more attractive place for high and medium-earners though, as seen in the recent series of income-tax cuts.

    Hey friend,

I was thinking about your third statement -- the abolishment of the electoral college... I know this is a hot issues down there (I'm in Canada... the land of the "fair vote") - so I'll only speak to it for a second.

The deal with changing the constitution isn't really THAT big. It would involve a popular vote (one citizen = one vote), and a constitutional ammendment. (Granted.. that is it's self a pretty big deal; but if the people of the US put up enough fuss over the election... that might do it)

There are a couple advantages (and quite a few disadvanges) to popular vote... the most important of those (as one /. comment put it) is that the rural areas of the US would be SoL... since the urban areas could DOMINATE the US system.

BUT... it's been shown (repeatedly) in economics, that urban centers are an economic "good". Having the synergy of a city creates more 'progress' than having a distributed population. (untill teleporters are cheap enough for ALL of us) [using normal economic assumptions...]

I don't think the American people should discount their right to change their own future -- there should be greater access to changing the constitution! Someone should get out there an do it... I wonder if Gore's would stick his neck out for it...?
