  1. PPPOE=reboot -- DHCP = good on Why Do We Have To Restart Routers? · · Score: 1

I have personally been using broadband for over 10 years. In that time I have lived in 3 different locations and used 5 different providers. During my usage I did notice one common thing. I had to reboot the router when using PPPOE almost daily (yea cron!) but never ever would it be required when using DHCP.

All the DSL providers I was on required use of PPPOE and the cable providers used DHCP. I know I wont ever use PPPOE again unless it is the last provider on the planet.

Ok, I installed Debian 2.2r2 on a computer at my house.. This was a couple of years ago.. I have not had to re-install it at all since then.. It updated just fine from 2.2 stable to 3.0 stable.. I even went to 3.0 testing without any problems.. Now I have Xfree 4 instead of 3.. KDE instead of twm..

You just cant do that with any redhat, mandrake, whatever box.. you end up having to install from scratch each time.. To me this ends up being what I would call a "throw away" server just like M$ winders does..

Given the choice of a single install that is good forever (in computer years at least) or wasting my time re-installing and re-configuring my OS every 6-8 months.. ack what a waste!

My problem with most games now is that they are driven by demands of money rather than the demands of having fun. Get it out the door. Make money. etc..

I had lots of fun playing Meridian 59 when it was in beta because the players were allowed the freedom to do what they wanted. In retail though it changed because if a player was being "evil" they were slapped down and told they couldnt do that or their account would be canceled.

Same thing happened in Everquest. Beta was a blast. Could do what you want. Out comes retail and bam. Have to play nice or not play. Blech.

I am not quite sure how much one of these crazy systems cost with quad xeons, raid and four nics..
But I think someone should do a comparison that is more like what a business would do and do a comparison for performance per cost.. Just taking a shot in the dark I am figuring one of those test systems that they are using costs about 10k if not more.. So how much performance could be gotten out of a linux for 10k (or whatever that single box costs)?

If it isnt obvious by now, these people are going to keep throwing benchmarks around using the ideal hardware to make NT look good.. but if a benchmark could be done using the hardware that linux really shines on.. What about a cluster of some sort? A redundant array of inexpensive machines?
