I feel just as safe as i always did. spying is not always the answer, and outside of complete 1984, its impossible to spy on everything which would be required to find out about the plots.

I personally dont see an ethical implication. Id be more worried about researchers outside the US doing something than acedamia world. WHen the US prevents research here, it will move elsewhere. but youd did have a point, the ramifications should be explored BEFORE banning said research

i think the NSA/CIA should do a better job in the first place so we dont have to play cleanup. they should be preventive, its no secret other people deeply hate the US, this will alwas exist, but when we screw around with their lives for the sake of "democracy" (or whatever rhetoric they used for overthrowing govts)

i dont disagree, except that the US can convince a company in a different country just as easily as a US based one. The NSA has always kept quiet about crypto exports. The FBI is constantly bitching about it. My guess is that the NSA has the tech to break, but the majority of peopl'e encrypted messages are not of concern.

Also opensource doesnt prevent someone from putting a back door in, example: A company puts a back door into its XYZ program, sells it to china. china wants the source code. the company sends them the none backdoored code

trusting the US is not the same as trusting Microsoft and viceversa. Microsoft and the US is not one entity (okay sometimes they seem it). The Black Chamber convinced international telecoms/telegraph services to secretly copy certain messages in the early 1900's, could they do the same now? now the NSA/3 letter acronym could just as easily "convince" a company in ANY country to bend over for them now a days, even more so today, "they were a front for terrorism?"

Ive only had one major problem with a non xinerama dual head display and kde 2.2, but i switched on xinerama and its fine for now until it is fixed up. Not a big deal. People that critisize debian for being out of date are usually out of touch. The stable release doesnt have the latest and greatest, but its STABLE and secure. If you want a server, run debian.
