The problem comes in the nature of the beast. It's like art really. Artists perform their art because it makes them feel good to share. And they want everyone to be in on it. The same can be said of Open Source. People code Open Source cause they want to not only create something for themselves, but to give it to the world. The problem comes in, about the same time as it hits the artist, when they want to put more time and energy behind their creation. They start to realize that the only way to dedicate more of their lives to this brain child of theirs they can't be bothered by things as mundane as work, or bills. The only solution is to make their brain child their job!! But because of things like the GPL, they've effectivly shot themselves in the foot. They can no longer sell their brain child. They can't even offer it for a measly $20 unless there's something else they can give with it. Thusly the support angle. Why do people go out and pay $60 for a copy of Red Hat when they can download.iso's or do an FTP install? Because if they pay, there's some guy who's sitting by a phone, and he's perfectly willing to help them when they fuck it up. If more OSS coders went non-OSS, and offered the source to purchasers through some new liscencing system the OSS movement would die though. I didn't say I had a solution, only that I think I have some insight as to the problem.
Small error there. You need a valid CDKey to use the Sierra Update to download patches. Anyone can go to http://www.planethalflife.com/ and download patches and mods to their hearts content.
Ahh yes... but Windows Activation checks your "Hardware Profile" against what activated. I doubt that Valve cares what hardware you're running. If anything it'll be checking IP/range against what IP you're on. I can see the activation hiccoughing when you switch ISP's... not hardware.
Just because a linux distro is trying to emulate the aesthetics of windows because it is known globally... doesn't mean in any way shape or form they are copying it. This is both good and bad... if it were a copy it would be unstable... but it would probably have DirectX and be useful as a gaming platform too. Though I must admit they did do a very good job of emulating the "Windows Desktop"(C)
Some games still have that old friend, check out Uplink, the great hacker game (and yes it's got the native Linux binaries on the disc) from Introversion

This isn't meant to be flambait, but for fuck's sake!! You guys act like a native Linux port of a game is either better than the Win32 version or will somehow allow you to beat Microsoft in some way! My main machine is dual-boot between Suse and WinXP... BECAUSE I PLAY GAMES!! I once tried to stay in Suse for a week. I couldn't do it because of all the games I play only 2 have native ports. And even those two sucked cock in Linux as compared to their Win32 counterparts in terms of configuration. I don't know if the makers of Wine(X) think that all Linux users have to be able to play with configs and settings files for hours anyways or what. But it took 6 hours to get Half-Life working... then an additional hour to get it working properly... then another 30 mins to get the mods working properly. Even UT took a while to get configured properly and it has the native port to Linux!! In summary, to all you motherfuckers who think that games should all have native ports and that Windows isn't good for anything... FUCK OFF!!
All right... so you don't seem to understand that if nVidia would give permission to some group associated with this project the right to take apart the detonators to make Xouvert work better with nVidia cards they'd probably want an NDA. Fact of the matter is that when working on anything open-source NDA's are looked down upon, but if you want to work WITH big business to get something usefull done, they're probably gonna insist for legal reasons. You don't have to pay for the new Linux kernel. No one's asking you to shell out >$30 for the new Mozilla Point Release. Yes... it's Open Source. But the SRD is nothing more than 67 MSWord documents spouting technical details about the books. Comparing the two, to use your analogy, is comparing the millions of Linux manpages to Windows Blah for Dummies. If you want to go through the manpages to find out how Red Hat 7.0 differs from Suse 6.7 be my guest. I'll just read the easier book.
As I recall I already said what I was doing... I'm downloading the 3.5e books and sending them to my trusty HP Laserjet IID. This seems to be the third option you missed. Anything else you want to suggest that I'm not going to do?
Hey dumbass. If you have to re-buy the books... IT'S NOT FREE CONTENT IS IT?!?!?! You're paying for it!! You're one of those people who thinks that Windows Update is a free service too huh?
I'm sick of people telling me to do this!! Have you ever read the SRD? I have it here... I've had a couple of friends who were told they could use it instead of the PHB. Not a chance in hell. First off, it's a technical document, not a well-laid-out Game Rule Book. Secondly, it's broken into 67 different MSWord files!! It's a pain in the ass. And if you try to justify buying the 3.5e books so that it's well organized, fsck right off!!
I'll post the same thing here I did on the WOTC forums. In fact... I'll cut and paste!
WHY IS THERE NO REBATE POLICY?!?!?!
This shows me WOTC has NO respect for me whatsoever! I paid them money (They rightfully deserved) for D&D 3e. I have no problem with that. But the fact that I now have to pay all over again to get the same damned thing is downright insulting! It's doubly insulting by them saying "It's a small update" and "Two players could be using different books for hours and not notice" How can you justify the price of the books for such a small update and not offer a rebate program or similar?? I for one will be downloading these books and would rather pay HP for the toner than pay WOTC for their "update." Hell... I wouldn't mind paying $15 for a 3.5 companion to be used with my 3e books. But being greedy gets you NOTHING!!
I'm just sad that for the second time in as many years, I have to watch my favorite RPG (Shadowrun) trade hands. Though I wouldn't be too saddened if this brings back the once kewl Shadowrun TCG.
Not yet... but come on... it's only a matter of time. We all know this... no matter how hard they (Nintendo, Sony, M$, etc.) strive against emulation, it just delays the inevitable. Give it a couple of months.
My favorite JAVA IDE is still Textpad... aside from highlighting syntax you're just a couple of shortcut keys away from compiling and running! Plus you can evaluate it for free at http://www.textpad.com/ Try it for a while and you'll see that it's a worthwhile investment.
Well... I've been a long time fan of the Final Fantasy series. I've beaten every game except 10 multiple times. I bought FF: Anthologies, 9, Cronicles, and Origins and I don't own a PSX... I emulate it. I own FF: 7 & 8 for PC. I even bought a GB for Final Fantasy Adventures 1,2,&3!! But I didn't really like Mystic Quest... I'll probably end up buying it and emulating a GameCube, but Unless the 4 players is something we can do while drinking (Hey I'm Canadian, it's our national pasttime!) I don't know if it will require me to buy a GameCube or not. And the Draw system was/is horrible... just bad... and evil... and was probably some mentally handicapped child's dying wish.
Amen brother... I agree wholeheartedly. I dual boot between Windows XP Pro and FreeBSD because I use Windows for games. I don't lament these reboots because I'm not an "unwashed dirty linux hippie" I know that FreeBSD or Linux or *nix will NEVER be on par with Windows as far as gaming because M$ PUMPS CASH INTO GAME DEVELOPERS!!! What the fuck do you expect... Valve is gonna say "Hey... Microsoft will give us $x to make HL2 for Windows but those Linux guys are cooler... we'll make in Linux only!!!" Retards.
Well... to start with here's my collection Now... the movies (owned or not) which deserve special mention; Memento - if you haven't seen it WATCH it now! Clerks - hell anything by Kevin Smith Snatch - hell anything by Guy Ritchie too! Johnny Mnemonic - Keanu breaking into SciFi Big Trouble - "I'd arrest him but my hands are full... what with my dick and all" Jeanine Garofolo(sp?) The First $20M - Good geek movie "This guy eats binary and shits C++"
To quote Tycho of Penny-Arcade fame http://www.penny-arcade.com/ I have no idea how your fruity SecuROM or whatever thwarts my computer. However, that is a matter quite apart from my ability to negate it. There are websites everyone knows that contain your mystical secrets, splayed sensuously for our delectation. And even if I exaggerated before - even if everyone doesn't know where to find this stuff - everybody knows someone like me. When you put out a patch, a patch minus your garbage comes out the same day. If you don't know this, I'm not surprised. If you do know this, why do you keep rolling that boulder up a hill? There's a halfway house for retardeds like you right across the street from me, you'd love it. If you want to read the rest of the article it's here http://www.penny-arcade.com/news.php3?date=2002-09 -20 He makes a great point.
I have been in this same situation. My office wanted me to look into migrating from Windows NT 4 to Linux. The unfortunate part is that the cost of training your employees makes it far too expensive in the short run. As well the maintenance of training all new employees makes for even more hassle. Plus administering a network full of people using an OS they're unfamiliar with is hardly fun. Always keep in mind that the average employee will have enough understanding of Windows to perform the job they were hired for. They don't know Linux. Just keep these things in mind and don't go by the base cost of the OS'es alone.
I use FreeBSD on my desktop as I fell in love with it many years ago. I use Suse on my laptop however for the advanced power management features. About two months ago a friend introduced my laptop Suse install to Ximian Gnome. I fell in love all over again. The interface is the most aesthetically beautiful and yet wholeheartedly functional I've ever seen.
My question for Nat would be "Have you ever thought about making a FreeBSD port with/stand/sysinstall in place of Red Carpet?"
Actually... I would really appreciate a copy of Office for Linux as I would prefer to use Linux at work and the only reason I can't is because of the Access Database I can't open in Unix! A version of MS Office would allow me to run FreeBSD or Linux on my work system and that is something I would love!!
I have one question. I've been running Windows XP and it doesn't like allowing me to run anything OpenGL on my lil Riva TNT. Can this version of the test be run in Direct3D?? Please God?? I'll try anyways but I figured if anyone would know you guys would... thanks.
