One, my ass! In my small city alone I see newspaper stories all the time about people getting arrested on kiddie porn traced back to their IP address. And there are probably even more hackers and pirates being raided who don't make it to the press.

In my large city, I can only recall once ever hearing of such a raid occurring, and it made the news not just the papers. Maybe the problem is you live in western fukakiddyville, and not that such things happen all the time. Perhaps it's just time to move?

That's nice, but only works in a romanticized version of reality. Almost all of my friends live hundreds of miles away. I don't care for most of my cow-orkers, and have little time available to do much with my friends who live nearby because I have a schedule to maintain with my kids and my friends work different hours than I do. There's a ridiculous number of reasons why for many people it is difficult to actually spend a lot of time hanging out with friends IRL, and probably just as many to justify keeping in touch via social media. For many, it's almost like we're integrating technology into our lives to give us more ways to keep in contact with people who physical world constraints make hard to spend face time with.

  14. Big breaks start from small holes on The Real Story On WPA's Flaw · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is more interesting than I suspect most people will think it is. With any security system, researchers build on weaknesses found piece by piece. It might not seem a big deal that short packets can be decoded nor that a few additional packets can be injected into a wifi network data stream, but these small cracks almost always lead to methods of getting more information from the security system.

I've been watching WPA security studies for a while, and this seems the most significant flaw yet found. It will be very interesting to see if and how this exploit is grown into something more generally usable.

I would think it would be smarter to add a front-light rather than a back light. As for the difficulty, I can only guess that it would be a bit of work but not out of reach of a smart hacker. I guess checking with the guy who made the original GameBoy Advance light kit might give an idea what is involved.

As for the refresh rate, that would be zero. The e-ink technology works by updating the screen once and then leaving it that way. This is why e-ink takes a brief but noticeable time to update on page-turns and why battery usage per page flip is fairly consistent across all page content.

WTF? How is profiling illegal? You have car insurance? Your rates are determined by profiling. Did you/are you/will you go to college? Admissions are based on profiling. Have you ever been asked to make a donation to some organization? You were probably selected by profiling. Have you ever taken prescription medicine? The medicine most likely to be effective for you was determined by profiling.

Yes, there are cases where profiling is illegal. But in and of itself, profiling is *not* illegal. At least, not in America. But then, I don't know where you live, so it might actually be illegal where you are.

The difference is that with the GPL, the rules are "you can do anything you want as long as you ALSO do X" while with the Alladin license it is, "you can do anything you want EXCEPT Y and Z." Since the GPL's ANYTHING is a larger set than the Alladin's (ANYTHING - YZ), the GPL is indeed more Free than the Alladin license.
Well, except you could also phrase your statement as:

"...with the GPL, the rules are "you can do anything you want EXCEPT you can't do anything without ALSO doing X" while with the Alladin license it is, "you can do anything you want EXCEPT Y and Z."

So really, they are both "Do anything EXCEPT" licenses. Just because you can linguistically mangle the definition and make them sound significantly different doesn't mean they are. Both are approaching free, but both also have restrictions that stop short of really being free.
