There are a lot of disappointed people over @ nexusoneforum.net with regards to the pricing. It sounds to me like Google lost alot of good will with such a high unsubsidized price.
"My hybrid has an 8 year warranty on the battery. I will keep my vehicle way past that. But how many people do you know that only own a vehicle for 3-4 years? I've worked with people here for 5 years, and they've gone through 3 cars EACH since I've known them."
I'm one of those people that only keeps a vehicle for short periods:) The tax credit would still help there.
"Unless they have solar, wind, or other sources at their home. Many people advocating that idea have solar at home for just this reason."
What about the fact that it takes more energy to produce a solar panel then a solar panel will ever generate? (at least, with current technology) -- that sounds like a step backwards.
The problems with Hybrid are many, here's just a few I can think of off the top of my head:
1. Hybrids are more expensive then their traditional counterparts. 2. Batteries are expensive to replace. 3. Batteries are not "good" for the environment. 4. People who "plug in" to pre-charge (such as some Prius owners) -- are still paying for that electricity. 5. The electricity used above still relies on a "non friendly" methods of production, which means your giving up gas here, but sacrificing coal (or nuclear, or insert method here) anyway.
Most of the downsides of Hybrids can also be applied to the downsides of any electric vehicle. The envo-friendly people dont understand that when you push for electric vehicles you are only "moving" the pollution from one source to the other. But, they dont care, as long as the pollution isnt around "them"... which creates the need for more electric plants, but they dont have any place to put the electric plants since no one wants a nuclear facility in their backyard... or coal burning, or, etc, etc.
As you can see, everyone wants all the benefits, but none of the downsides. What are we going to do with these millions of batteries when they need to be disposed?
Would it be possible for the zones themselves to be distributed via rsync? Mirrors could be provided, and scripts could be setup easily to handle multiple zones from different 'lists' -- the problems I see here is that the zones would be available to ANYBODY (including spammers) -- However, they are now, just with alot more work involved.
Something to think about... Performing a:
rmerge sync rmerge dsbl/monkeys.com
would be neat, and would not rely on any external DNS server, as the zones would be locally hosted.
Running the above from crond every 5 hours, etc. would keep the list fresh.
The company I work for uses subsidies to provide better service to rural areas where it would not otherwise make financial sense.
What does this mean? It means that people that do live in the middle of nowhere can get DSL, and other high speed services (such as T1's, etc) -- It means we can provide DSL out of "remote" boxes, that the larger RBOC's ignore... we dont just serve from the CO, we serve from the tiny little boxes on your street corners, etc.
What else does this mean? It also means that the cable companies no longer have a 9.1% price advantage over their phone competitors.... All phone services must charge this. DSL, Phone, etc... so the cable companies have been enjoying 'being out of the taxified circle' and now things are starting to even up.
This is obviously good for our company, but since the tax does go to a good cause, its good for everyone.
Another portion goes to help pay for phone lines for low income housings. The program is called LITAP (Low Income Telephone Assistance Program) -- and it helps poverished families... I can think of a few older women who are handicapped and homebound that this fund helps in our serving areas.
For those of you that suggest "People in the Rural area dont need hardwired phones, they should just use cell phones" are way out of the know. You deserve a swift hit with the clue bat.
1. Cell providers have no interest in serving rural areas... cell coverage in truly rural areas is horrible.
2. Two Words: Lifeline POTS -- The cell phone companies are not regulated in the sense that if they have an outage affecting customers, they pay a fine. Almost all telephone companies must submit performance figures to the PUC of that State -- If they have even a single customer outage of more then 24 hours, you can bet they are going to take some heat for it. This does not include "Designed" services, but regular POTS service is covered by this.
This means the telephone company better get your service working or pay the price. This is done so that everyone has the potential to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
Cell phones have no such obligation, and as such.. you are basicly screwed until they feel like getting to it.
These are just a few of the reasons... I could go on, but these are sufficient to show that the fund does work, and will benefit many people.
I wont even touch on the fact that Public Schools and Libraries that have a hard enough time putting books in the shelves can also help pay for high speed internet, computers, etc. to level the playing field with "rich" schools.
Sure, I loved Doom 1 -- I first started playing on my 386sx25, postage stamp sized screen in low detail... i could tell when someone was shooting at me because the screen turned red. I would swivel in a circle until i saw flashing:)
Then, my upgrade to an SLC2/66 -- Still couldnt run full screen full detail, but it was much better...
Lots of late nights playing co-op over my v.fc zoom modem (sysop special)
Playing 4 player doom2 over modem (APCi add on, lotsa money, lotsa hardware needed) was awesome..
But, I'll never forget my first night playing doom. Sitting in my bedroom, sound going through my stereo, fire up the game and the first thing you hear is an awesome NIN song.... the ambient sounds were just awesome. The music couldnt have matched the maps better....
Monsters jumping out, sounds perfect... scare the hell out of you. I have never felt so immersed in my life while playing a game.
Thats just single player... multiplayer I spent more hours in that game then any other game ever. Alot of the mods kept it alive, especially TF before cheats became rampant.. If there was a cheat free version, I'd still be playing it today. Even the non GL version, since the "feel" was there, and it wasnt in the GL version.
I dont think id has ever come close to Quake as far as "feel" has come.. the mouse always feels not quite up to par, and the movement has been slightly 'off' since that engine... Just, nothing has ever felt right since then.
Its the small things that make all the difference.
I have an RCA MM52110 -- it does have a line doubler built in.
Over DSS Satellite, it looks great. You can use the VGA input (HD input) or the analog input, and even regular channels look fine through BOTH inputs.
It also has an extra VGA input (plug a regular computer into the TV) -- it'll do 64k colors in 800x600 -- i wish it would do higher rez, but this is good enough. X looks wonderful in 52" BTW. I like to play some MP3's with XMMS and a full screen plug in that interacts with the music, it looks wonderful. For the price, the TV is really good.
I've had HDTV for a while now (the dish, the receiver, the TV) and aside from watching the HD demo channel now and again, there hasnt been ANYTHING worth watching in HD on the TV yet.
HBO does some broadcasts in HD but you cant tell a difference between it and the regular broadcast other then it is in widescreen. Its not filmed with the proper equipment, and so its not truly HD.
There is already, and they dont sell to many units either. The cost of deployment is very high. Forget the price of fiber, even for a second. Their NID costs $900 EACH (thats per home, folks)
I remember the later days of BBS software, before the internet started to get such a market share of dialup users.. the best software i remember:
PCBoard with PPC (programming language) was very powerful and stable.
I ran the hack software as well, vision/x, oblivion/2, etc, etc. Very fun stuff hacking around.
I put up a LAN between my 386 and SLC2/66 with LANtastics just to be able to play games and run the board at the same time (running it under desqview was too slow)
Fav. door games?
Without a doubt, my fav. was "Land of Devastation" which is being ported to the internet by the original author here: http://www.landofdev.com/ -- it was amazingly complex for its time.. it had a seperate VGA client, which included.MOD support... It was a great game.
Also, "the pit" i loved, "global war" (risk), usurper was pretty cool (kinda like a less PG rated LORD, but with many more options, but no RIP support)
I also remember pimp wars:)
I remember the great feeling i had after dialing in at 2400 baud to the local boards without ANSI support, finally finding that ANSI "option" in my comm program and thinking i had opened another door to a whole new world just because i had ANSI color support instead of ASCII only:)

What is this going to do to Tivo stock I wonder? ;)
The interesting question to me would be wether this is going to violate the Google Adsense TOS to display "adsense" and "ebay ads" on the same page.
As I understand it, you are not allowed to present contextual ads from Google and anyone else on the same page.

all you need is console access.

FYI == For Your Information.
You don't need to add "For Your" in front of FYI.

Ahhhh, a tear is forming, i better stop.
Does anyone have any actual info about this "computer"?
I agree with the ban on Amiga news articles, it's clear that they are utterly full of shit 90% of the time.
Is it just me, or does AI sound like they dont even know what the f' their doing, and they are just trying to capitalize on the name.
Maybee their waiting for an IPO or something and hope that the buzzword of the week 'amiga' will reap them billions.
I'm sick and tired of hearing about amigas plans, when they dont have any plans. This is getting to be worse then the OJ case.
