  1. Re:Seasoned programmers... on How Do I Manage Seasoned Programmers? · · Score: 1

    Read up on Agile.
As a programmer I have felt the most empowered, gotten the most enjoyment, and positive feedback, by working in an Agile scrum team.

I second this; the agile process works quite well. If you're new to the process, attend a scrum master course.

It emphasizes transparency and makes problems apparent much earlier than traditional processes.

  3. all legal responsibilty == more expensive software on BBC Commentator Goes After Software Licensing · · Score: 1

Sure I'd be willing to sign a contract accepting all legal responsibilty for problem arising from my code, but the price of my software would go up %2000, and the time to deliver would jump too. If I'm signing a contract like that, I'm going to make damn sure it's as bug free as possible. If you look at embedded software (stuff used in planes and medical equipment, etc), they probably have similar contracts, because people will die if the software fails.

If people that kind of quality from boxed software, they have to be willing to pay for it, and unless lives are at stake (or millions of dollars), they're generally not.

Think of the picture of the south vietnamese general executing the captured vc fighter during the tet offensive, that changed the American public's perception of the whole war... Many journalists would gladly give up a 10k camera to get photos of the inside of a North Korean political prison camp, or something along those lines.
