I don't know anyone who wanted Vista or anyone whose attitude to Windows 7 is anything but 'well, I guess it will be on the next PC I buy'.
Hi, I'm quite looking forward to upgrading my machine to an SSD based Windows 7 machine. And yes, Vista was shite. Then again, so is XP64...(crappy drivers, software that...sorta works, stuff like that).
You don't know you are born unless you've experienced the bureaucracy in France. In fact in general, compared with other countries, Britons have relatively little to complain about. The only reason most of them THINK they have it so bad is because of their little Britain ignorance of other countries politics.
Hmm, I have experienced said bureaucracy, and on the whole it took very little trouble to get all the necessary paperwork sorted. Anecdotal evidence obviously, but I found that, like people everywhere really, if you approach french civil servants in a civil(pun intended) manner and appeal to their ego a bit, they're more than willing to put in a proper job.
Our government does things well?!!!! Absolutely. US government representatives do an excellent job of representing their electorate. They bluster around, spouting ideology, and spend their time doing what's best for them and theirs.
Middle way "Proven to Work"? Where? Hmmm, Scandinavia for example?
Anyone remember how long it took before PC CDROM drives had buffer underrun protection?
I considered CD writers before that point not fit for general use. I'm actually amazed people bought those drives. No other choice I guess.
Lessee, in those good ol' days i worked the helpdesk for 6 different brands of cd-burners at the same time(as well as a whole lot of other pc peripheral related junk);-)
In all fairness the early IDE burners were fine, you just had to pay attention to what you were doing. SCSI was a lot better, but costs reflected the change in quality big time. Burnproof did change the game significantly though. I fondly remember getting to test the earliest models and pretty much torturing the poor test pc to see how well it could handle burning a cd while being subjected to a full virus scan and other heavy I/O related tasks at the same time.
But then I enjoyed windows ME, so take my reminiscing with the appropriate amount of salt...
Good governments are rare if not non-existent. When you empower one group to rule over another, the temptation to use that power to benefit the ruling group is very strong.
Governments are made up of people. People are stupid, lazy, resentful, emotional...or just posting to Slashdot while they should be working. Heck, I see tons of waste around me every single day, it's just the way of the world. For every n people in an organization producing actual product, there's n^2 telling them when and how to do it(the why often gets left out).
If you don't like the terms under which they provide a product, don't buy their product. Don't pirate their product. Don't acquire their product in any way, shape, or form. Otherwise, you're just being a raging hypocrite, and proving to them the necessity of their bullshit.
Why? If i'm not going to buy their product anyway, what is the business case for implementing something that costs money, does not impede me from pirating the movie in any way, shape or form anyway, and is only a hassle to those that actually *do* buy it?
They fuck with us, we fuck with them. There's more of us.
Fascism the insulting label IS used by lefties to insult righties. However, the ideals the Fascism espoused ARE leftist ideals.
"... by establishing significant government control over business and labour (Mussolini called his nation's system "the corporate state".(Rao, B. V. History of Modern Europe Ad 1789-2002. Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd, 2006. p. 215)
As Mussolini put it, "All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
Government control of all commerce is a leftist ideal, probably somewhere between socialism and communism. And I use leftist here in the USA sense.
Fascism combines elements of both the left and right. Trying to peg it squarely on either side is the kind of polarized thinking one would expect from an american...oh wait.
Trying to describe all the possible combination of electoral and economic systems on a single left-right axis is silly, imo. (Yes, in theory a combination of direct democracy and communism would be possible)
Hmmmm...a spaceship containing all the knowledge of the human race speeding away from earth, desperately trying to stay ahead of the signal sent by a rogue DRM server. Explosions! Excitement!
Think SyFy would buy the script? Would probably require a lot of sex and teenage angst to really go down well though.
The best way to express it would be six people, none of whom are sexually attracted to any one of the others, or three very stable couples, or some other dynamic that does not allow the buildup of sexual tension.
Throw in 520 days in an isolated environment, and none of the above starting parameters has a glimmer of a chance of making it through.
Anyone who's ever worked in an office should be able to recount their sexual harassment training.
Seriously? I've been in this place for years, the very concept of a sexual harassment training would be laughed out the door. Heck, the next company magazine is doing an article on the various couples(married or not) that we have within the organization.
Is this a US phenomenon? (prevents lawsuits or something?)
Exactly. Those of us that pirate will do it anyway, because no matter what technological hurdles the content industry tries to throw up, they're simply no match for the great unwashed masses out there.
So the only thing these schemes accomplish is to piss off the people that actually paid good money for the product. I honestly, truly want to buy Mass Effect 2 when it comes out. But I just know EA is going to implement some sort of shitty DRM solution that'll make playing the game a pain in the ass. Net result: the pirate release is a far superior product.
As for the whole copying for own use aspect, many many countries have laws on the books that no matter what the copyright owner says, we're allowed to make backups and in some cases even share a copy among friends.
And the excuse 'I want to make copies in case it is destroyed' is an absolutely poor excuse, for the simple reason that between the time a CD/DVD is bought and the time it is destroyed there is plenty of time to watch/listen to films/songs over and over, until you get bored with it.
Let me guess. You're single and never have family with kids over to your place(assuming you have a place to call your own)?
Excuse me? You think hunter-gatherers didn't trade food and supplies between each other? or between different hunter-gatherer societies? That is a market.
Way before that one of the apes in the pack already hit the rest over the head to assert dominance, and then made decisions for the entire group.
May not have been very democratic, but at least he got all the girls.
It's kind of odd, as I doubt many people would buy a AAA title more than once but folks don't seem to mind doing it for a small indie studio.
Think of it as their(our) way of saying: "Thank you for not only making an awesome game, but also for not being a total jackass like all the other game companies. Have some extra money!"
And yes, when the service is really good I'm quite a heavy tipper;-)
I have the various sharepoint sites on our intranet that I work with mapped as network shares. It's been a looooooong time since I saw that little animation of the flashlight going back and forth, but sharepoint takes me right back down nostalgia lane;-)
Computers are just so damn logical, working with them is completely removed from normal everyday life.
Ehmm, where I work we have the typical Windows, Sharepoint and Office setup. There's really not all that much of a difference between workstations and co-workers. The odds of it/them doing what you ask them to depends on their mood, the phase of the moon, how late it was last night and a whole bunch of other factors.
Logic, however, doesn't seem to play a very important part in the equation;-)
How much longer should I go on? Talking like gubbmint is somehow universally bad is just idiot talk. Sure, it's got it's problems, but the idea that it's somehow the definition of evil is... wrong!
Get lost, and come back when you have something intelligent to say!
Wow, that's one heck of a tirade. Judging from your reaction alone my OP deserves a troll mod or 2, inadvertently as it my have been.
And yes, I was taking a stab at the libertards around here. Tongue in cheek and all that. And, as much as I hate to do this...the urge is too strong to resist. Whooooooosh!
Over the years I've met a lot of people that display the following characteristics:
1. Well below average intelligence 2. Unable to communicate in a coherent fashion(no ability to elaborate on a point except to repeat it verbatim but louder) 3. Blissfully unaware of points 2. and 3. 4. Blame anyone else but themselves for the failure that passes for their lives.
Quite often folks like these will tell long stories about how everyone in the world is out to screw them over, including civil servants, cops, insurance companies and pretty much anyone else that expects you to be able to add up 1 and 1. If you do some follow-up questions, assuming you haven't suffered brain damage by then, it turns out that they simply behave in such a way that anyone they deal with instantly dislikes them and does the absolute minimum possible to get rid of them.
After a few experiences like that, folks like these start believing that "the system is out to get them" and will stop making use of the services society provides, such as 911. Judging from the story, the lady falls squarely in that category.
There's no point arguing. Americans have deluded themselves into thinking that because we, pinko commie europeans, let our governments take care of certain centralized matters such as healthcare that somehow there are massive bureaucracies etc. involved. The fact that here we still have multiple insurance companies competing to give us better healthcare at a lower cost is conveniently ignored in the rhetoric.
And yes, we're seeing a shift towards the right lately, unfortunately mostly related to "the evil furriners". There have also been a lot of experiments with privatizing various industries(public transport, healthcare, telecom, etc), which usually leads to a net increase in cost for the customer.
However, we're less "free" and living in a gilded cage which is about to get the cushion pulled out.
I don't know why that goo in the middle of solder needs a capacitor, but it does!
Well, duh, to make your console explode whenever the ship gets hit and someone not too important is using it ofcourse. Either that, or they need an excuse to use the set for sickbay some more.
I don't know anyone who wanted Vista or anyone whose attitude to Windows 7 is anything but 'well, I guess it will be on the next PC I buy'.

"ESA is looking for European volunteers to take part." ...because only Europeans have enough vacation days to participate in a 520-day experiment.
oh wait! how about: ...because everyone knows that Europeans already live in a bubble, so the transition should be no problem for them.
Now, now, no need to exaggerate. I only get about 8-10 weeks a year, and that's quite a lot.
Ofcourse we don't have that ridiculous nonsense concerning sick days.
I wonder what you mean about the bubble though. I'll look at the sky tonight and try to see it.

Not to mention the number of artists that performed Crossroads before Clapton got his hands on it ;-)
And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spend the rest of the evening with "you spin me round" stuck in my head.

Anything the government does is evil, restricts freedoms and is inefficient by definition.
So please, stop this evil FCC man in his tracks.
In other news, Google moves to Russia.

Interestingly, Crazy girls most of the time are not also Hot, but Hot girls most of the time also turn out to be Crazy.
So, to summarize:
- not so hot girls = crazy
- hot girls = crazy
And this is news...why again? ;-)
Okay, I'll rephrase the question. Why should everyone have a legal right to broadband Internet access?
Because these days, it is effectively a requirement for those wanting to participate in society?
