Maybe they're trying to go one better than Symbian. Symbian devkit licensees get source for just about the whole of Symbian OS except the kernel.

I tried out the Canesta projection keyboard at the Symbian expo in London two years ago. The keyboard was projected using a laser, and was perfectly visible in the artificial light of the exhibition hall. The keyboard generally worked well, and was linked bia Bluetooth to a Sony Ericsson P800.

The real drawback of these devices in my opinion is the lack of tactile feedback - until the character appears on the screen you don't know whether you've hit the key correctly. It's fine for hunt-and-peck typing, but touch-typists have trouble with them.

  13. Re:The phone itself is badly designed. on Cell Phone with Built-in Projector · · Score: 1

Cell phones don't necessarily have to have convenient keypads for number entry because they have a built-in phone directory. The design considerations for mobile usability are different to those of a desk phone.
If the user wants to phone someone using a cell phone, they typically search for a contact by name rather than enter the number using the keypad.

  14. Foo Fighters on BMG Stops Producing CDs · · Score: 2, Informative

I made the mistake of buying the new Foo Fighters album without reading the small print (...contains copy control technology, will play on a PC (windows) using software contained on the disc...). So I feared the worst by the time I got it home. However, it plays fine in WinAmp, rips without problems with Audiograbber, and plays fine in XMMS under linux. So either their copy control technology is useless, or they're trying something sneaky, whatever that may be.

Incidentally, the Compact Disc logo doesn't appear on any of the packaging or the disc itself.

Well, almost. UK residents have to pay around 1000 pounds a year towards tuition fees, which is means tested so poorer students don't have to pay. This is the same regardless of the stature or quality of the university. EU residents have to pay more, and non-EU residents even more.

Nevertheless, a university education at Oxford, Cambridge or the backwater college of your choice is essentially paid for by the education authority. Living expenses are a different matter, hence my large student loan...
