Look, GPL3 does not force ``our" morality (in whatever sense of ``our" is relevant) here on anyone; nobody is compelled to use the license OR to use software released under such a license.

Hehe, that's correct. You're free to use the license or not. You can just as well release your work as public domain if you wish. Or protect it with a super restrictive Microsoft-style license where you're barely allowed to even run the software.

But what's being discussed, and why you see all "forcing morale on others stuff" is that you indeed do this if you decide to use GPLv3, which is what the article is basically about; the why's of why Linus don't really like it. And the reason is a lot about forcing morale on others.

Feel free to stray from the topic at hand (implications of GPLv3 and thoughts about it) but be aware you may go off-topic..

  3. Is Sony missing on the MMORPG golden rule? on Washington Post on Star Wars Galaxies Changes · · Score: 4, Insightful

If it's "easy to play", and people can easier become Jedi's, and play/meet up with iconic characters, and it's more fast paced, won't SOE risk exchanging a player base of dedicated players with long term goals with unreliable (as for income stream) short-term players looking at the game as an action shooter they're done with after a month or so? I thought the point with MMORPG's was to set up several long term goals and lots of stuff to do, with lots of professions to pick from, lots of quests, lots of opportunities for social interactions, and basically make people grow into the world and make it their home on the Internet. Sounds evil, but I think that's what most MMORPG's strive for, although it doesn't sound like this one does anymore...

Is Sony missing that the equation is money * time = revenue?

Could Sony now see effects of a shortly increased popularity, but be worse off than ever in just a year?

Some companies manage to pull this off quite well, such as Blizzard with Diablo II, but that one's fee-free, as well as an FPS action game like Counterstrike. I think SOE will have quite a large burden to carry to make people want to pay monthly for some action with a reduced depth, professions, and less varying goals to aspire to.

It's two online services to help in finding music by suggesting music similar to what you've told it you listen to yourself, either via a media player plugin and simply playing the music, or telling it manually by submitting that information. The music is selected and played for free for you via an "intelligent" radio service, with the virtual "radio channel" personalized for you, rather than by a DJ, and some people see this as the future for online radio, or even music radio in general.

They have vast music libraries the algorithms suggest music from. There's some complexity in the algorithms to determine the music, and many have actually been happy with the results as the services have helped them find new music in their taste.

After a number of songs have been played, Last.fm also finds users that have played similar music to you to automatically create communities with similar interests who can then share music with each other, and IIRC you can also join such a community manually if you wish.

If not even this works, there's always robots.txt as well.

But you have to wonder what the point would be. They'll be discovered by less people after all, which is kinda the point with Google News in the first place. To find news.

For a low level serial port reader app with a slick GUI designer on strictly Windows, Visual C++ Express seems to be one way to go. It's free as in beer and supports native Windows application as well as .NET application development (in that case via Managed C++, but then you need the ~20 MB or so .NET Framework runtime included with your apps, and I guess you don't want that).

One thing I can unfortunately not check now is whether it comes with the C++ GUI designer (which you'd probably be most interested in), as the screenshot only happened to show the .NET designer, and native C++ use a different one. I'm not sure if that one is included in the Express edition or not.
