Reduced risks include cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, stroke) and neurological disorders (Alzheimers, other dementias, Parkinson's). There is a correlation with an overall reduced risk of mortality, even after controlling for income and education.
I actualy read this paragraph like "There is a correlation with an overall reduced risk of morality" witch I would have compleatly agreed also.:-)

This is true, and I agree 100% with you. But this could be a good thing for certain kind of applications. Movies, games, heck even music. All of those could have a os embeded in the boot sector that would boot directly into the application, movie or whatever.
All those application have one thing in common they require full atention of the user, and usually they would benefit if they had full atention from the CPU and memory also. Since they usually are used by themselves no lost in booting directly into them. With a clever structure it could be played troght a traditional OS also, for those who don't like the idea of rebooting their computers.
I am a Brasilian, and as you probably have heard we had invaded orkut.:-) We do love social networks, we are very social, even the most nerd ones here do go out and meet people in bars (ok Brasil is very big, and my experience is most with Rio).
We also love the internet and every new gadget or service. This does not stop us from meeting in bars and in person, just the oposite, I've seen Orkut making people more social and meet more people in person in a few months then in years I have known them. I myself have been put in contact with people I barely seen before, in a way that we can get out more.
All that said is just to show that the problem you're ranting about, witch I do believe it is a real problem, is not the fault of social networks or intenet chats that help people meet on-line, but really more of a cultural or even a personal problem (some people simply are afraid of meeting other people).
Ps. I hate orkut, it is buggy as hell and almost useless. The only good thing it has is the mass of people they have. Otherwise it is a really crap, almost aways out of service.

That's it I guess. I really hate this rewriting the history. Bootlegs are the only way out. I want to have StarWars where Han Shoots first, I want to have the crappy (ok they were not really crappy) special efects. It is part of history.
To me is Ok to have a new version with new sceenes, but it is not ok to making it impossible to get a original version. And I think it is really ok to offer us something that is simply being denied to us.
First, I am not saying to use those words with people you don't have intimacy, be coworkers, friends, lovers or what ever. With unknown people you should use the usual social traits.
Now I think each person is quite diferent with what they accept and what they mean. Some people are more loose, and will use words in a more loose context, other are more "serious" and will not be so loose.
All I am saying is that I don't believe in banning words. Words are not rude, people are, and people can be rude, sexist and even an "assholes" with any set of words and the otherway arround is also true.
People relations are extremely complex and I don't believe in simple solutions like "don't use this or that word". Well I hope I did clarify myself.
Words are harmless, meaning are. It doesn't matter what word you use if you mean it as insult, it is a insult. I can imagine easily a couple calling themselves the worst insult words in a romantic (not sexy, but romantic) manner and it is also quite easy to picture a racist using politically correct words to insult everyone and their neighbors.
I usually think the wiser persons would, should, not be offended by the use of a specific word. The use of a word is extremely personal, and could have many meanings.
Said that, I am just want to state that I am not saying to everyone start using bad words to people you don't know, this would be impolite at least. But I do believe that a little informality is aways more comfortable.
Unfortunally, yes, this happens to be one of my emails. I used to work in the [omitted*] instituition, witch is a very respected and known arround the world research center for math. But unfortunally the cited institution has became a know place to spam and to spoof froms.
They do have a strong security politics there. There is a very restrictive firewall between not only the inside to the outside, but also between internal subnets. Public use computers got into a fake ip subnet that have even more restrictive firewalls.
This has not stoped spammers to find out out domain. We received a few thousands spans by day that were not even addressed to real users (current or former users included).

Also I would like to apoligise to the other readers, because this is somewhat off topic.
And this is exactly what it is now. X-chat is only an application, but it is usualy installed when you install gnome in distributions (in fedora/redhat at least)
So what you're saying is that even thought the book is available on the internet for free you would still want to buy it with a nice print and a cool hard cover?
I guess that just like you there are thousands (hundreds of thousands), so even if the music, movies and books are free people would still want to buy cds, dvds and paper books, provided the prices are fair and there are enougth value added to it (nice cover, dvd extras, lyrics in a booklet, you name it).
So even thought there are no impediment to you give a copy of your CD to a friend, there would still be a market for a nice distributed cd with a booklet of pictures and lyrics and as such to a record company to make a profit.
The point is not if X or Y deserve what they get, but why there is one person who gets richer then everyone else and hundreds of authors that get's next to nothing? I can bet that most of the writers who do live out of writing is not doing author works. They are probably doing scripts for cheesy soap operas or the like.
Copywright protects the distributors not the authors. Sure some of the authors do get some of the juice, but not all of them. The internet has the capability of making self-distribuite artists, and this scares the hell out of the {MP,R}IAA. So they push those draconian copywright bills to protect themselves and as a media trick they convince everyone that they are protecting the artists, who are of today strugling to survive (save for one or two lucky ones).
It will not detect a off device. A bad guy who wants to sneak in and start calls from a secured facility can simply turn off his fone, put it inside a coke can and then turn it on when apropiate.
I know I am not the first one to get this idea, in fact the first time I heard of it was when Lula, the president of Brasil, said it would implement a tax over wills. He would not take it all, he only sujested to tax it. The society in one voice said no to this, because it was such an abnormality.
I also know that there are problems in the implementation of such laws, but since I don't think it will ever be considered it is simply mental masturbation trying to solve the problems with it. As I see it the problem that invalidate this is the way people think, not pratical ones as you poited out.
But since I like discussions,:-), I will give another option. Why not turn this company a IPO(*) and sell them preferably to the 800 employees. Why should the son or daughter have precedence over the people who work there?
The way it is today, if this son or daughter are not interested in continuing maintaining the enterprise they will probably sell it, in hole or scraps. So there is still a problem in some cases.
Copyrights are actually the one form of property that you can reasonably claim: "Nobody would ever have this if I didn't create it." It's a very pure creation that doesn't depend on any prior property of any kind. So, it might actually be reasonable to give infinite ownership to the creator.
Well I don't agree with jadavis, I know that is not how mine society and culture thinks and I am quite sure it isn't how your society thinks. But I don't think that this should be truen even for real wealth.
Let me explain, in my point of vies, many of western societies were based in european monarchy. In those times wealth, lands and more importantly titles, were passed from father to sun. This would ensure that the aristrocracy would stay powerful and dominant.
In the modern days we don't have a "aristocracy" or do we? The wealthiest and richer do have a head start. They simply get all theyr money from their parents and can keep living the good life most people can only dream about.
Is it fair? The answer I think most people will give are "sure" and "of course". But I don't think so. I am not a religious man myself, but I do think that all men should be created equal. To an extend this is not possible, because a rich father can donate money to their heir when he is still alive. But when he dies why should the son suddenly become rich? Why shouldn't this money be redistribuited to the hole society?
Sure this would be dificult, but just imagine if all this money from all the people who die, would pay for medical ensuring living people. Pay for education and unemplyment ensuranses. And even more importantly paying for retirment, to give a dignity to the people who alredy contributed to the society.
Well I know it is an utopia. People who have the power don't want to share it, not even when they are already dead.
This is the most serious problem I see. We consumer should have access to the version we did watch in the theaters. I don't mind if director X felt bad about some voice-over, or if director Y thinks that some character should be a sissy. I shure would like to see the movies the way I remember it for a change. With crappy special effects and the ideology of the time the film was conceived.
Well the compression algorithm in gif and PNG are ideed lossless, but you must remember that GIF is limited to 256 colors. This is a font of loss in quality of an image. PNG can have full color lossless images, but this would be huge evem with a better compression scheme, so usualy one will probably end up reducing the color space to enhance compression losing some quality.
I am not sure about what kind of people, people that are used to the unix world can make this separation just fine. After all it is probably that they have already seen the same GNU tools working in another OS like solaris or something. Heck I even saw bash and other working under windows...
On the other hand, people that are used to windows or macs will tend not to understand this issue, after all MS is actively tring to blur the line between the OS Kernel and the UI on top of it, even in the development model (moving gui functions to kernel to speed up NT, for instance).
Apple I am not sure what position it has, but at least seems that they do separate UI from OS. Isn't it true that the OSX UI has a separate name "aqua" or this describe another thing compleatly? But since many user don't experience the separation it may be also hard to understand it.
That's exactly what the logo shows. The two green letters are in sequence in front and beghind the arrow, the only one pierced is the red one.
:-)
In the real world there would have 100's of red letters and a single green letter.
