I am not a religious man my self, but your description of a "religion" seems a little hush even to me. There are several religions that seek out self-improvement, and "spiritual ascending". many oriental religions, teaches that one must find the "salvation" (or nirvana, if you preffer) by himself.
Even the catholic church, witch have abused and stills try to abuse it's power even today (see the recent statments the pope did about homosexual marriage), have many vertents that encorage people to give to the poor.
In my opinion religion is not bad as it's own, but generaly there is a organisations behind it. Those organisation that do try to use the power to maximum level it allows them.

Mean while, we got a golden gift in story telling by J.K. Rowling, Hery Potter. She dosen't try to explain why there is an entire quarter of magical shops in the middle of london and no one noticed. "It is a kind of magic", that is the explication, no need for the midiclhorians or the Alien planet of "highlander II".

I say that if the ISP is responsive to the user request and open the ports he asks for on demand, I am all for the firewall in ISP itself. Since this is very rare, at least here in Brasil, I would prefer to have all ports open, and do all the firewalling in the client side.

Also those are also in the order of the day of the organisation that lead the development of the desktop environments. I am not a KDE user, but in gnome there is the gnome foundation who's job is exactly enforcing the HIG (human interface guidelines), and making shure that all bundled software follow's it. I belive KDE has a similar organisation.

MP3 throws away innaudible frequencies, so if you try to create an mp3 with such low frequencies they would probably be lost in the compression.
