An inspirational example is below. But one thing it makes clear. Our country is deeply divided. Not just two toxic political parties bitterly fighting (through the people who support each), but also how the government (which is made of people) are divided against the citizens. Also how the divide between rich and poor is increasing. Neither side in any of these divisions even makes a pretense of playing fair, clean or by the rules anymore.

If you took the time to check the voting record for all of your least favorite bills that have become your least favorite laws, you would notice something interesting. The vast majority of them pass with almost universal support from both parties. There are innumerable examples, here are a few: the DMCA, or the Patriot Act, or even the Iraq war, for instance. So, one could surmise that in the most contentious circumstances, in the most trying of times, and under the most intense pressure to defend the rights and lives of Americans, your "bitterly fighting" parties vote unanimously in favor of propositions that lead to evisceration of the constitutional rights of Americans as well as the deaths of the same.

I don't see a bitter fight between ideologically opposed parties. Sure they seem to fight with the tactics and maturity of 5th graders on the playground. The problem is those people who view their party as the salvation of the country, rather than viewing the people of the country as their allies regardless of political affiliation. Why is this the problem? Because partisan sub-humans support government power expansion when it is done by the leaders they elect. Since they view their elected leader as a club with which to beat the rest of the population into submission to their dearly held principles, the more power they can invest in those leaders the better. Anything from history and news to what happened on the way to work, even something as simple as an interaction between two people, is and always has been subject to spin, misinterpretation, misunderstanding, misrepresentation, error, and good old deliberate lies. There is always a difference between what actually happened and the story you tell yourself and others.

You think "alternative facts" are a new thing? You think they just started happening once this administration started using the term? Ever heard the phrase "history is written by the winners?" Its the same damn thing. Ever watched MSNBC or Fox News? Same damn thing.

Even thinking that you have the real data to compare the "alternative facts" to is an assumption without merit. Your best bet is to check multiple sources and then analyze. Look at the emphasis, de-emphasis, omissions, x-or the "facts," Venn diagram the overlap in multiple dimensions between the material. Then check the motivations, historical groupthink, and tunnel vision from the sources you are checking. Last and most important, don't ever accept anyone else's narrative. Ever.

The biggest enemy of reality is bias. Unfortunately, the only reliable auditor of your internal state is also the origin of your bias. Most people will never challenge their bias. They already know they are right and their brain is more than willing to rubber stamp anything that confirms their preconceived notions. Brains are geared to collecting evidence of correlation and reinforcement. Actively challenging your own beliefs is seldom done. As a result, the production of most brains is hopelessly flawed with bias.

If you are just now realizing this you have a ton of catching up to do. And, based on your reaction and so many others like you, the administration's use of the term "alternative facts" was a good thing. It has the possibility of turning brain dead sheep into thinking beings.

I work in the auto industry. Consider all manufacturer surveys on a logarithmic scale. On a 1 through 10 rating system with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, most dealership operators and manufacturers consider 9 a failing grade for the salesperson. Yes, you read that right. A survey filled out with 9's all the way down will get most salespeople called on the carpet. And if you average a 90% rating for the month you may not work there the next month.

Many salespeople's living wage is ties to bonuses that come from customer satisfaction ratings. You get paid one amount for selling a car. You get paid a higher amount if your average customer satisfaction for the month (or sometimes a 3 month rolling average) is above a certain very high number (like 97%.) Some dealerships tie all performance bonuses to high customer satisfaction scores, easily halving the pay of the salesperson if they get one survey with low scores.

For instance, as a salesperson I have had one customer who scored a survey in the 85% range and due to the circumstances of that month, it cost me over $3500 in lost bonuses. This is not an isolated instance. It happens routinely at dealerships all over the country.

The first time I heard from a manufacturer's rep that customer satisfaction ratings are directly related to not only future sales for the marque but also current resale value I knew it was a sham.

  19. I would take issue with your first assertion. The memory, record, and threat of our bellicose foreign interactions are a deterrent for all of our adversaries.

The blunder of the Vietnam War you point to is misplaced. That war was created by the US for ulterior motives having to do with China. One's lens of that part of history is distorted if they think in terms of victory in North Vietnam being a prerequisite for American victory and attainment of American goals in that region. It was specifically not the objective and when the objective was accomplished America withdrew its forces. See the Pentagon Papers for details.

The planning, incitement, and creation of a war for ulterior motives proves your point about America loving war. The memories of our grandfathers who survived World War II disprove it.
