I've been very interested in "Digital VCR" lately because I could save my favorite shows. I could care less about file sharing, but I don't have time to watch every show!

I've also considered Cable In The Classroom could be an option because I know two high schools with VCD players [DVD/TV].

Geez man my cousin lived in the downtown/inner city/ghetto area and couldn't get a phone line into his building - no one would install it.

The telephone companies coporate offices are about 10 (actually 8) blocks away. There is apartments 6 blocks away with T1 lines to the highest priced apartments.

The problem is the tax doesn't get paid back. At least the money doesn't trickle down. The problem was that he lived in a building which never had service - they refused to setup the line (drop it into the window?) without funds from the city which "weren't there".

He was willing to pay for everything except what they (the company) has to pay by law. So we collect tax and it's not even paying to get real customers! I feel sorry for people who need 911 services but can't get a phone. It's been ruled here in my city that 911 is a right because it's funded by taxes.

The problem was the pay phone was always being used by crack dealers. But for some reason it was only 20 cents so maybe it all works out?

We just figured the police paid the other 30 cents and listened in...

[the moral of this story is that sometimes taxes are good. if the funds are used right it might get people back into market (or whatever). the error isn't in the amount of taxes we take, the error is that we don't try to stretch it as far as we can. know where investments are[

But we are getting off the subject. One aspect is the fact that your IM's become court record. The other aspect is the fact that your employer doesn't want you to do something on their computers.

If the MS model is to use 56-bit then it's flawed. Hell, anything lower than 4096-bit isn't really all to safe.

I'd just use PGP to create two keys with two different pass-phrases - put my secret keys on CD [floppy et. al.] - and then would I put the data 'out there'.

It really doesn't matter who holds the data. The problem is what we use to protect the data. 128-bit isn't enough. RC5, DES [triple or not] and similar crappy encryption protocols is what makes us afraid of a central system.

If I run across an application for playing mp3s [and it's based in part on perl] I've just found an application that could take hours to install.

The sorry thing is actually that there are applications out there that aren't distribution based that could help.

Software installation needs to become seemless. Until then there are no problems. Window managers aren't even .1% of the problem. If you can't use KDE or Gnome then you may not even be able to use XP.

I'm somewhat disgusted by the people who scream about cable providers who wouldn't share their lines yet they think this is "cool".

Think about it. Sure, one service created to serve them all - but hell, one service to rule them all as well.

Are we asking for it when we say we want POTS and all the rest rolled into one? For example: I love my Time Warner cable. I wouldn't use a dish if it was free. If this service is rolled out will it kill my options [or limit them]?

Let's keep in mind that optical internet is awsome. Let's also remember that adding in TV, Phone and Cable could cause so many collisions that the internet aspect wouldn't be worth it.

IMHO we should keep these services seperate for now. Having our options open for 'net access is ideal. Telephone lines are fsck'n fine [I CAN call anywhere now can't I?]. Cable and Satellite is out there.

So why do we need this? Sure, I want fiber to my house. But why should I share the bandwidth with my phone and the rest?

:: Of course the simple answer is that there is a provider who wants to collect on all the services. It's greed stupid! ::

I do agree that apt-get is the most straight forward way to install software.

The problem comes in though that if you just stumble on a webpage you can't download and install like "Windows" software. There needs to be a one way to easily install software.

Of course though this causes problems and brings us back to the same security problems that "Windows" users deal with.

It's a very complex issue and an issue that needs to be approached with the most serious efforts.

Gnome, IMHO sucks. KDE isn't too much better - but better for ex-"Windows" users. Windowmaker on the other hand is small and lightweight and good enough to convert the masses.

GUI's [window managers] are something that can be choosen between so there is little point debating on which to use. We can only provide help or support to those who choose one over another.

So basically, yes debian does this [and that] but others need to get a clue and actually copy each other. They all have the right. If the community acutally got together linux would be on every desktop.

I don't mean to diss gnome... I actually like it. But in my opinion KDE is on the tract to the mainstream while GTK/Gnome is the basis to all that is good. Either way, the whole community [KDE, GNOME et. al.] needs to work together or quit working at all.
