doc ruby was proposing that the carry-on luggage be sent on a different flight... I was previously happy to bring my expensive stuff on-board, but if it's not in my immediate control, I'd like to have it automatically insured for full replacement value. And actually, if I'm bringing stuff essential for a business trip and it doesn't show up (or is damaged), that pretty much messes up the whole reason for the trip... there are incidental damages they couldn't possibly cover.
up the insurance coverage of my carryon stuff to include my $5k laptop, $8k photo lens, and $3k camera back that I use for work, and you've got a deal. I think the current limits are about $400 per bag.
Oh wait, what if my anti-psychotic meds get lost in transit and I totally freak out on the plane - they use non-lethal means, right? Oh, no, they want to use real guns. Well, at least I'll be safe from shoe bombers, right?
I totally agree... I think of rolex's as just fancy jewelery that you can buy in any mall in america. I prefer unique and technologically advanced watches. (I've had my hardened titanium ventura for 4 years and it's totally scratch-free and I haven't met another person wearing one) But, the Woman's Rolex automatic Oyster Datejust is the most consistently precise and accurate movement tested by COSC, so you've got to give them some credit.
Actually, I'd prefer to get this info on my cell phone, and I don't need much advance time. If it could turn on the vibrator while the earthquake was going on, that would be good. That way, I'll never miss another one due to riding in the back of a bus.
Yep, I missed that part of the article and didn't read it until after I posted. I'm a bit surprised at this and I wonder if it's a misquote. The same Jason Schultz is quoted on the EFF site as saying (RE: hiring the head of ATF for Piracy Enforcement):
"If they really wanted to solve their file-sharing problems, the RIAA should have considered hiring someone with a business plan rather than a baton and a bulletproof vest."
I wonder if he meant that "confiscating bootleg CDs from street vendors" is the right thing to do, but should be done through legal channels (court order and real police) rather than with intimidation.
Ok, I went ahead and did a favor for the slashdot community and mankind. I took the fake colorized images and colored them back to the original infrared colors. You can see the results here. I hope this pleases the original story submitter.
(also, the apple II roms were harder to clone... it was tightly written code that had to be placed at specific locations... it would be hard to re-write them differently without altering the size and/or placement of the routines)
Not enough EE's represented here, so I'll take a shot:
Took the tantalum cap that we used to decouple the +5v power supply and used it to decouple a +12v power supply. About two months later, after we had about a dozen products in the field, I found out that it was rated at 9 volts.
I worked really hard to write the recall letter without using the words "explode" or "burst into flame" while trying to convey the thought that this part probably wouldn't catch their whole system on fire.
I like the "Stop the insanity!" type of porn. The "Save the US Constitution!" type has too much plot, while the "Stop Bush!" seems to defeat the whole purpose of porn.
and remember, the 48sx/gx's buttons don't have silk-screen indicators... they are actually molded plastic color that goes all the way through the keys, so it's impossible for them to rub off. I just wish other people making calculators and laptop keyboards went to that expense to make something right.
that was my first thought, but then do you think they'd be able to sell such crap without the image of britney or avrigail in people's heads when they are listening to music? They are most certainly image brokers, but not the photographic kind.
Nvidia hasn't announced a comparable chip, but they just joined the Khronos group that is promoting the OpenGL ES spec for embedded systems. Product demos are also being given by 3Dlabs, TAKUMI, Hybrid Graphics, Futuremark, Motorola, PowerVR/Imgtec, and NeoMagic at today's digital game summit.
... tantamount to politely telling someone their fly is unzipped and getting your nose punched in gratitude (as the person continues to wander around with the fly unzipped, punching people who are trying to help them)
I kindof like your analogy. People who intentionally walk around with their fly down are perverts, and hopefully the police will pick them up on "indecent exposure" charges. I wonder if the same logic will ever get applied to vulnerable computer ports? (Not that I'd be for it, but still curious). People with insecure systems would say "quit looking at my ports" and would have as much success as perverts whose defense is "if it offends you, then quit looking at my package"
I have a dell inspiron 366 MHz PII with the dual battery packs. It weighs over 10 pounds, and it has 155 WHr of capacity total. The battery lasts eight hours.
I love to code at coffeeshops, and in fact, took a year's sabbatical where I did most of my coding in coffeeshops. In the four years of owning this computer (it shipped with win98), only once did I ever run down the batteries. Eight hours of coding and I was pretty beat - six hours of creative thought was all I was good for at a time. I hope you can survive to 12, but you might want to try it before buy a machine to that spec.
(p.s. I love that machine, but it was too heavy for anything but a backpack)
The EUCD (european union copyright directive) is even more restrictive than the DMCA, so there are less places to hack freely. good article and another. Makes me long for the days I did my hacking in deepest darkest Peru (ok, Lima wasn't deep and only dark in the wintertime)
please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that's an approved use. (it's also not in the new exemptions) I think the closest exemption is "encryption research," which is permitted only to advance the state of the art in encryption:
(A) the term "encryption research" means activities necessary to identify and analyze flaws and vulnerabilities of encryption technologies applied to copyrighted works, if these activities are conducted to advance the state of knowledge in the field of encryption technology or to assist in the development of encryption products
That's great! I also had thought of the point system assignable by other drivers (anonymous & hard to forge, of course), but hadn't broken it into two kinds. I love how you handled the idiot points - LOL!
At a certain number of points on a license, drivers will not be able to use air bags. A few more points, and no seatbelts. And then after that, the doors and front windshield will be removed. And finally, after a whole lot of points, a big spike gets installed on the steering wheel. Drivers can wait the time it takes for their points to expire, or they can choose to drive very carefully.
Solution: Every year, raise the minimum smoking age by 6 months. No one on the verge of legal age will be seriously inconvenienced, and even now-newborns will be able to smoke when they reach the age of 32.
Actually, go ahead and stop when the minimum age becomes 45, and the "for grown-ups-only" aspect that wanting-to-define-themselves teenagers are looking for will be seriously diminished.
Seriously, the RJR-Nabisco anti-smoking ads are the worst thing public policy could allow... they say "little baby kids shouldn't smoke", with the subtext "if you don't want to be treated like a baby, then you should smoke" (or, if you disagree with my statement there, consider the "nonsmoking is immature" alternative). They usually show 9-to-12 year olds when they should be showing teenagers instead.
disclaimer: my mom had 1/5th of her lung removed and still smokes. She'll probably still smoke when she has emphysema... (p.s. those warnings on cigarettes say you can get emphysema, but I would say most people who start smoking don't have any idea what that is, much less met someone with it)

What is THE best site for up to the minute reports?
I'd have to say Gusev Crater, but if you can't make it there, you could try this jpl (has all images & press releases) or this other jpl site (has more articles). Don't miss the 3D model they've built of the site

wohoo- first post jason! congrats!
p.s. I really am a mature person. I talked with Gwen and Ren in December and they were really helpful.
Looks like my EFF Swat hat will come in handy, after all! I'm really glad I donated this year.

IBM didn't license the PC's design... the clones had to reverse engineer the BIOS and made compatible machines without IBM's blessing. The difference between Apple and IBM is that you could get the IBM OS from Microsoft, but Apple was the only source of Apple-compatible OS's.

from tech specs: Cache Backup Battery Modules (sold separately) for over 72 hours of memory protection.
I think you're out of luck for the headphones unless you've got one of those fance fibrechannel headphones

It looks normal now, but I assume you mean the 2004 new year's image that has now been archived with the other holiday logos.
I like that idea, but I've got another one...

The download page requires a fake name and email, but you can skip that and get the latest version (1.10-001) here. (Total karma whore link: EFI homepage)
The license isn't actually too bad - it just says that if you provide them feedback, then you also grant them the right to implement your idea.
