We had cable until COX took Turner Classic Movies off of analog cable and put it on digital cable, at which point we had enough. Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, The History Channel, and Sci-Fi/SyFy were already on the way down but hadn't hit rock bottom yet. We don't miss it. Between XBMC, free content or ad-supported streaming content via our network-connected Blu-ray player, and free content via web browser, there's no reason to pay for content that still comes with ads anymore. Cut the cord permanently.

Dish cutting AMC was the last straw for me. Now I survive on Netflix streaming, Hulu and and Redbox along with what I buy in DVDs, Blu-ray and iTunes. I save a bundle every month and I don't miss all the lame cable channels. When you have 300 to 500 channels and nothing worth watching it's time for on demand!

They removed ""Hide iTunes" from the top menu so you either have to turn it off or click in the window and mouse over the bottom bar and wait several seconds for the bar to come up then start another software to escape iTunes. It's become one of the most obnoxious softwares I've ever used and now they made a mess of it so it defaults to the "Store" making purchases easier and using anything else a headache. Notice how no one is talking about that they want gun and video game bans and no one is talking about prevention. Most of these same people look the other way at abuse and odds are their kids are doing the bullying since these days it's popular kids verses the unpopular ones so they don't want to talk about bullying. Attacking guns and video games is feel good crap. It won't end the violence but they get to feel like they accomplished something. How bad can it get get? I know the aquarium guy was 18 months behind at one point. A lot of these companies will keep delaying payments until they get you six to twelve months behind then they find some one else and hand it off to their lawyers. They know the worst that will happen if you sue them is they will have to pay what they owe. The catch-22 is if you sue them in the corporate world you get known as some one that will sue so you become a risk. Okay for all the anti solar people which are most of Slashdot here are the facts. You said the system would run 30K or 10K out of pocket after tax breaks. Say you have a $200 a month power bill which is fairly average nation wide. With the tax break you are talking a little over 4 years for pay back, say 4 1/2 years. Since solar cells have a life of 25 to 30 years we're talking 20 to 25 years of free power and after that it tappers off for another say 20 years! Even without the breaks you are talking around a 7 year pay off resulting in 18 to 23 years without a power bill and a smaller return after that for another 20 years. Forget we are talking solar verse nuclear which this is really about. Let's say I offered you a stock. At a 10K investment in 4.5 years I return a hundred percent of your investment then pay you $2,400 a year for the next 25 years with a smaller return for another 20 years would you consider that a sound investment? The numbers look excellent. FYI those generators aren't rated for very many hours and some areas end up without power for a month. They are really meant for a day or two's use. This is about largely wiping out your power bill and with a little extra expense you can spend blackouts watching your big screen and not sweating the month's worth of meat in your freezer. Where solar shines is it's a great way of spreading the load since it works best when demand is highest and it decentralizes the power. How is this a bad thing???

Obviously the real Death Star isn't possible to build but say something that was anywhere from a 1,000' across to a mile could be built with current technology. Sell it as an ultimate defense/offensive platform. Even standard ICBMs launched from it would be nearly impossible to shoot down since they could reach targets in minutes. It could be multi-purpose from communications to a support system for satellites. It could even be equipment with particle beam and laser weapons forming a defensive platform for incoming attacks. It'd break a bunch of treaties and cost trillions but imagine how many corporations would get rich off it's construction.

"Fields" not frames. A field is a half frame. It's persistence of vision that makes it look like 25 frames, I assume you're in Europe. The field rate is based on the number of cycles for simplicity's sake. Europe and much of the world is 50 cycle making 50 fields easy to sync. The US is 60 cycles so our video is 60 fields. We're coming up on a hundred year anniversary of Tunguska so I'd say we're due for a similar impact any day now. It could be tomorrow or a hundred years from now but statistically we're due now. We aren't talking end of the world because most of the world was only affected by the dust of the last major impact and the odds of one hitting a major city are similar to winning the lottery. Unfortunately the odds are high of an ocean impact and that could be worse than a land impact. Very few of these objects are being tracked in the northern hemisphere and virtually none in the lower hemisphere, I can't remember but I think it's a few percent for the south. I think they are a terrible pet for the average person but the laws they passed are ridiculous because they force most owners into a situation of either having their snakes put to sleep or releasing them. What people don't realize is Florida is the only state in the union that they can survive in. They are extremely sensitive to cold and don't like dry conditions. Banning the transportation in the other lower 48 is nuts. Ban importation fine, ban the sale in Florida fine. In Florida they need a system where people can turn them in no questions asked and hopefully to wildlife rescues and not to be put down. Owners can grow really attached to them and may foolishly release them so they aren't killed. Also ban the breeding of Pythons in Florida. The problem could disappear as in new releases if they aren't allowed to breed. Unfortunately they should have never been allowed in Florida. Now the situation is nearly impossible to control. Florida is still dragging their feet on the solution. There's hunting restrictions in many areas where as they should be encouraged. It'd be worth putting a bounty on them and it could even be partly paid by the sale of the skins. When I was in New Zealand they were selling items like fur covered notepads made of Opossum fur. They imported a type of Opossum from Australia a 100 years ago to start a fur industry. They population is out of control so they are trying everything to irradicate them. Florida needs to get aggressive. Sell python based products and use the money to fund hunts. It may be impossible to get rid of them but you can seriously reduce the numbers.
