  1. Give me my GTK+2.0! on Gnome Hackers Sorting Out Differences RE:2.0 · · Score: 1

I don't use Gnome (did for a while, but I'm over that). I don't use KDE. I don't want to use anything like them. All I want is a nice toolkit that makes my apps pretty. I don't need to turn my desktop back into a windows (work|look)alike.

That said, it is interesting to watch all that's going on here. I hope they get all their stuff straightened out soon.

  2. interesting situation on SETI@Home A Security Threat, Says TVA · · Score: 1

I've got an interesting situation. I work on my personal machine at my job. I don't work from home, I just took my machine to work with me. My machine, both monitors, speakers, the whole set. I leave my machine on 24/7 (mind you, I tend to be working on it about 16/6 of that).

Am I stealing from the company? Technically, I guess I am. Am I security risk? Probably. I'm not as anal as I should be about my system. Hell, I'm such a power user that I get the pleasure of being outside the firewall, and I get to run my OS of choice instead of w2kpro.

If you were my employer, how would you feel? Happy, that I saved you the cost of another PC? Or mad that I don't fit nicely into the cookie cutter for employees?

OK, maybe I've been misunderstood. I don't give a flying rat's ass how "cool" someone using Linux, or BSD, or windows is for that matter. I'm merely commenting that it is unfortunate that unlike the user base of windows, the user base of Linux tends to be judged based on the script-kiddies that use it.

Now, i've bitten a little too hard on this flame-bait, and I'm going to get on with my life.

I used to hate comments like this. Recently I came to realize how much truth they contain. A friend of mine w/ a moderate understanding of *NIX asked me to help a (15 year old) friend of his install Linux. I agreed, and then found out that the purpose of this install was to make the kid's Half-Life server more stable. After about 10 minutes of 31337 questions, and asking why I went to a real university instead of a "computer college" where they "don't mess around with all that worthless history and stuff, they just teach you computers," I wanted to commit a murder-suicide. It's not often that you can feel your IQ leaking out your ear.

I wish there was a way to keep such people from using Linux (as bad as that sounds) because they make those of us who use it to do real work look like hax0rz and script-kiddies.

Just my $0.02 (and probably a match to start a flame war)

It's called CD Text, and there's a lot of CDs now coming out with it on them. It's great for making mix cds, especially if your car's head unit reads CD Text. It's incredibly useful beyond the making of MP3s (or OGGs), and I can't believe that MP3 making is what's keeping the record industry from using it.

If you think about it, linking is what has made the web so popular. I remember using Archie, Veronica, gopher, etc back in the day. Linking was minimal, if at all (especially with some of the earlier programs). Those protocols have all fallen by the wayside. The reason is that they were harder to use because there was no linking. Starting at my home page, I can get to almost any place on the web, without typing. Take that away, and the web is suddenly a lot less fun to use.
