In addition to the gimp (linux / mac / win )... check out scribus which does a pretty good job of reproducing most of what indesign does, and is quite stable.
... no need for backups...
I would seriously suggest a xerox machine for the occasioanl backup of your moleskine's crucial pages, especially if you carry it everywhere.
What they are not saying is that Vista's version of Internet Exploder will not only have MSN as the default start page, it will have M$earch as the default search engine.
I use a very inexpensive but functional Palm App called HourzPro (www.zoskware.com) - very easy to use, syncs to CVS. This is one of the few Palm Add-ons that I have paid for and use regularly.
There is a nice timer function. Everything is easily editable.
Also includes an Expense feature which I really never use.
One very handy feature is that the database is searchable (using the Palm search.
Except... the MS Viewers do not run on any operating system except Microsoft's - some of us would rather not spend money on a proprietary OS either.
On non-MS operating systems, I can read and print PDF documents with a wide variety of FREE applications, as well as a nice assortment of commercial applications.
I think I understand what you are trying to do here.
Truly the only way to really secure a PC is to lock it in a room away from 'end users'.
Once you do that, you can use something like VNC or Windows Remote Desktop to monitor and control the programs.
If you can't move the CPU, at least you could remove keyboards and mice, and put a big note on the monitor to have people call you to find out when the machine will be available again. (Then use a remote client.)
Not sure about your bike, but if you have a flourescent light bulb handy, it will light up under those lines - try riding your bike with the tube in your hand and see what happens.
(You might look at the voltage across the tube's pins when you are riding versus standing still, but then you would have to ride with no hands; something I have a ticket on record for in HI, I beat it because the law (in HI) says you have to be able to to have one hand on the controls - it does not have to be there. I got pulled over for passing cars in Waikiki w/ no hands on my way to work.)
Don't try this at home - only under high tension lines.

I have a client who uses pre-printed (logo and reply) 6-per-page laser labels.
For small projects, we run the sheets thru a laser printer more than once to print as few as one label at a time.
A Word template for the label sheets make it easy to cut-paste the address into a spot where the label has not been used yet.

Any other good euphemisms? Like
Vulcan Nerve Pinch or 3-Finger-Salute?
Are you my neighbor?

If so, turn on your wireless card, I don't bother to keep it closed, because most of us can't afford wireless

One thing that jumped out at me was the 'sign-language glove'. A nearly identical invention won an Intel scholarship award more than a year ago. see:

I am curious as to whether Microsoft acknowleges the 'prior art' in this invention.

I use ssh to log into my 'server' from a wifi laptop, then I can run scripts written to use mpg123, or the nice ncurses-based mp3blaster.
The server's sound card is connected to a home stereo system.
You could probably also forward xmms to your laptop's X, but I have never tried that.

I run mandrake on a laptop, and supermount renders the cd/rw unusable - disabling and putting a normal mount point in fstab works tho.
Two that you left out, which seem to find constant application in Software Engineering, if not pure 'Computer Science'
How can you use ethereal in real time like an IRC?

We do not need juries.
I used to test them - no public ip, but they definitely talked; your doc would only worry if you had 100% packet loss.
pournelle and niven drew a lot from his work.
his little fuzzy books are worth finding.
