...that they can "crack" into a school district computer and no one blinks an eye. But the moment a student would try the same thing, he would be expelled.
SO funny, it's true. We had an open finger access at Brandeis University and I was a bash script to collect everybody's information, then I posted it to the pre-freshmen forum, all the freshmen loved me... as for the administration... let's just say I'm not enrolled there any more.
Everyone seems to think "Yeah a channel that was purely __________ would rock! I'd so watch it all the time!" Sorry but it wouldn't be Akira followed by Princess Mononoke. More likely "What the hell is this?" then "God... this really sucks." Unless someone feels like throwing millions of dollars into a moneypit, I fear this will disappoint.
The list of Animes looks pretty good to me
Blue Seed, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Burn Up Excess, Burn Up W, Dai-Guard, Excel Saga, Gasaraki, Golden Boy, Gunsmith Cats, Kimera, Martian Successor Nadesico, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ninja Resurrection, Noir, RahXephon, Rune Soldier, Samurai X, Samurai X The Motion Picture, Sorcerer Hunters, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Spriggan, Steel Angel Kurumi, Tekken, Those Who Hunt Elves, Zone of The Enders: Idolo.
The problem with any kind of "public" resource is that it doesn't belong to everyone -- it belongs to noone. Noone cares enough about it to protect or conserve it. Everyone just wants to grab as big a piece as possible.
___ What an... interesting view of things.
So, I presume that you'd like to argue that Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, etc. should be privatized - because obviously them being National Parks (which are de facto public property managed by the National Park Service) means that nobody cares about them.
Managed by the National Park Service is the key. It's more insiteful to say that they parks are owned by the national government, and that the gov wants to preserve them and they allow people on them but still enforce their own rules to keep it there. Ie no logging.
As a former MTU student, I can give you an idea of how easy it is to find someone there. Try this simple exercise:
finger nievelt@mtu.edu
Yeah but all the RIAA has is your IP, of course if MTU allows vanity host names then it's easy. other wise if it's just something like DHCP-xxx-xx-xxx-xxx.xxx.xx.xxx.xxx then it can be pretty hard to figure out, and often only the sysadmins have the ability to reverse lookup these things.
This is all well and good but what exactly are the implications here. Obviously the university can't condone priracy, but the idea of course is that a University does need to be a place for the free exchange of ideas and they need to protect their students.
I guess what's importain here is that the RIAA can more easy track a static ip whereas for a dial up connection they have to go though the ISP. Though I'm starting to wonder how they knew anyway who it was without the university's co-operation.
Reguardless, what can we realisticly expect Universities to do to help students? Any takers?
A priate with a peg leg is technically a cyborg, even some relgious sects won't take pace makers. I can't find the article right now but I remember awhile back there was a guy who bypassed the ethics board for permission to use human subjects cause he used himself.
What happens if we can exchange data though a cybernetic medium? What will emcompass personal idenity? What about knowledge theft? or Hacking other people's minds?
Furthermore, is it ethical to try to prevent these things? For instance is it ethical for the US to ban clone? What if another country (China) devlops it anyway, and at that point it's out of our hands?
Just like in the CCG Netrunner. Your a hacker trying to liberate the agendas of the evil corperations to try to prevent them from taking over the world.
I know a lot of people are saying that they are just going to rehash old ideas, but even if they do do that to some extent at least it will be from a different perspective and even given the same problems they may have to come up with different solutions. (ie now that 10 years have passed in real time, so much our TV evolve)
Of course I'd still like to see them at the edge of television. Not sure what that means now-a-days though.
IANAL but, what about the $36.50? And any other costs incured in the civil suit? I wouldn't try to get anything outragous. But if you just ask for that money, and refuse to settle out of court, you would be doing your part to get more cases on the records.
"The focus of these organisations should be on people who are running or pirating music for clear commercial benefit,"
How does sharing a few singles on a website pose a pirate threat or count as pirating music as a clear commercial benefit. Granted I don't know the full situation but it doesn't sound like anything more than "Hey here are some songs I like from [Fill In the Blank] band! Check em out!"
You didn't read the article closely, that's the defence here, saying that these students aren't getting commercial benefit.
Though I'm tempted to say for a less skilled downloading community you should use http and the reverse for ftp. But now I'm thinking that doesn't quite fit since one can always wget a http file (or ftp file for that matter) and one can use ftp though a web browser.
Eh, my vote is https, more secure, and maybe more manly since it's not port 80? Of course moving out a directory structure is more natural for me than to click on pretty little icons.
Therefore I conclude use ftp (or sftp) if you got users the like command prompts. Otherwise just go for the one whose logs are more fun for you to read.
Forget the Conspiracy Theorists, even as a kid I always though it would be cool to be able to see the remains of our moon landings from Earth. I mean the rings of Saturn are neat, but being able to be reminded in a real way that humans have gone to the moon is very cool.
I mean really what happens in the future when the average Joe can go down to Target and pick up a high powered telescope. The Conspiracy Theorists will say, no that's not from 1969, NASA just put it on the moon to cover their asses.

Hrm, we'd need a new drug-reference analogy to replace the likes of "Evercrack". What's more addictive than crack???
The book was very clear that that was the same guy in the book who pretended to be god, whose limbs were distroyed by the Q and then was trapped at the center of the galaxy.
I switched to Linux about 2 year ago. I stoped wasting my time on computer games, I started to learn more programming and systems administration, and I felt more powerful using Linux. It changed me for the better.
However...
I am currently at home with the parents and they do not want to get cable for the sole reason they do not want me to enjoy staying at the house (next semister I'll be back in the dorms). We only have dial up and Juno, our crappy service provider, only provides a windows version of it's propriatory software. It's not even worth it for me to switch out my winmodem for one of my older ones. So right now I'm suck in Windows using Pheonix and will be happy to get back into Linux in the spring semister.
I'd like to see copyright extended to 2,500 years, and it should be retroactive like the previous laws. That way I can copyright the Bible and *really* rake in the bucks.
And then the desendents of the Grimm brothers can sue Disney.
Need I say more.
What's the point of pirated software if you have to pay for it?

You are correct, though this is actually an old tactic. Which is why I still don't use a modern GUI to read my mail.

Though I would never use a single sign on myself so many people would that I do believe it's good that we have an open source alternative.
