  3. Re:DEFINATELY the OLPC on Computer For a Child? · · Score: 1

I also bought an original G1G1 OLPC for my then 2-year old. While there aren't a lot of activities that she can use on her own, she can turn the computer on and off and can use the tam tam mini activity to a certain extent (she can use the direction keys to select different sounds and then mash the keyboard to adjust the pitch of the sound.

The computer is quite rugged too. It folds up into a little briefcase shape with a handle.

Also, since I find it too slow and hard to type on for me, there's never going to be contention for access to it.

She gets a lot more use and enjoyment out of my iPhone however. She can launch itunes, play a movie, pause the movie, quite itunes, scroll the home screen to see the icon of an app she likes, launch and use the app and so on.

It is quite rugged and the only precaution I take is to make sure she doesn't walk around with it (or have sticky fingers)

  4. Render an IMAX movie of Mandelbrot set zooming on Cool/Weird Stuff To Do On a Cluster? · · Score: 1

Given the costs of producing IMAX moves (millions of dollars each) this could be a very inexpensive IMAX movie, even if you had to purchase the cluster.

Hell, forget IMAX, just render a big-ass movie and seed it on thepiratebay.

  6. Which size matters? on Better Jukebox Software for Bigger Libraries? · · Score: 1

A lot of people in this thread are just comparing the disk space consumed by their music libraries without regard for the number of tracks in the library. The issue isn't the size that the music library consumes on disk, its the amount of metadata that comes with the number of tracks in the library, and the efficiency with which a jukebox program can juggle the metadata.

  7. Re:iTunes FYI on Better Jukebox Software for Bigger Libraries? · · Score: 1

Hmmm. On my machine, iTunes Music Library.xml is 133 MB and iTunes Library is 141 MB so your theory seems incomplete.

I have a MacPro and an iTunes library of around 80,000 songs and I can tell you that iTunes gets bogged down at times. I support more RAM would help.

According to this inforworld article http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archives /2006/01/the_mac_perform.html Apple chose to use benchmarks optimized for dual core CPUs and then compared the new Mac's results against single core G5 Macs... seems kind a fishy to me.

  20. This question is the crux of our marketing on Tips for Selecting a Web Development Firm? · · Score: 1

I own a small web development company that develops dynamic, content managed web sites built on Zope. We are in the process of writing a document entitled The Tough Pointed Questions to ask any web developer before you sign the cheque (and the only answers you should accept).

The idea of this document is to provide prospective clients (many of whom are not very knowledgeable) with a resource that will help them in choosing a firm to partner with, even if they don't choose us.

There is no one thing that you should ask or look for, there are many. Unfortunately the document isn't yet in a state that can be shared, but I'd be pleased to email a copy to anyone who'd like one once it's ready to disseminate. The 3 components of my email address are 'david', 'com' and 'emergence.'

I'd like to point out that when the iPod mini was released it was totally panned on slashdot as too expensive for not enough storage, and besides, who wouldn't spend the extra $100 to get the 15GB model?

It should be noted that Apple literally sold hundreds of thousands of them despite the slashdot crowd proving that they wouldn't sell.

Well, yes, this is a dumb thing to say. I meant to say that the user interface and the user experience were lame.

  25. Cool idea, but... on Griffin RadioSHARK Exceeds Expectations · · Score: 5, Informative

I ordered mine in July of 2003 and got it last week.

The application (at least on OS X) leaves a lot to be desired. It does not behave like a typical OS X application in many ways, have no way to edit a preset- if you want to go back and put in the radio station's call sign or a genre descriptor you have to re-add the station as a preset and then delete the first instance of the preset, there are no menu options (and thus no keyboard shortcuts) for many of the really important GUI elements.

The time shift feature is a good idea, but is poorly implemented. You can set a number of seconds to move forwards or backwards (defaults to 10 seconds) by pressing the left and right arrow or you can drag the slider around forwards and backwards in the time shift buffer but these 2 methods are either too granular or too coarse to help you pinpoint a precise location.

It would be so cool if Griffin Technologies opened up the API... since the GUI and user interface are just so lame.
