I don't think we are getting the full story on this guy and his denial to the US. I think there's probably more to it that isn't being revealed.
For those who don't know, you can be denied access to the US if you don't have a return ticket, or if they feel you don't have enough money to sustain yourself while you stay in the US. This applies to Canada and many other countries considered FREE.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the whole FREEDOM thing pertain to the citizens specifically?
Like any job opportunity, you weed out a great % just by the resume. Once you find a few viable candidates the rest of the resumes get filed and reopened if need be. This situation isn't unique to this job opportunity. I used to supervise in a call centre and a simple $12/hr job would get hundreds sometime thousands of applications.
The device is still supported but doesn't support the new OS. I don't see a difference with Android. On the other hand iOS keeps providing OS updates to all versions of their phone and let me tell you it's just incentive to upgrade your hardware because it usually wrecks the experience (it did in my case and many other users I know).
Your opinion is only based on your tech savy usage of the device. 95% of users can't update their Android OS if it's not automatically done.
Actually their share of the market is currently increasing. They have more than doubled their presence in that market in the last 12 months. Although I don't see how buying RIM would help them at this point.
Not a fan of multiple hardware vendors participating as it will result in inconsistent experience which can kill the platform. MS, Nintendo and Sony have all provided consistent experiences across each of their boxes. Steam OS needs to either provide the hardware, have strong partnership with select vendors or this will not work. Steam OS could push away consumers for the same reason Windows gaming has pushed away non techie players. Windows isn't dying as a gaming platform but it has seen a massive decrease in big titles released on it's platform.
Another anonymous coward. Not surprised. I mean the guy quit IT because he couldn't handle some software. What a bad attitude to have towards anything. Oh... it's too hard, I can't handle it. Life is hard in his corner of the world.
What choice do they have? I only see 2 options for PCs when I go to a store: "Apple or Windows". Most love that they can save over $200 by picking Windows. It always comes down to price and reputation. In the eyes of end users, Windows has a good reputation.
Yes, I agree with your comment of Windows 8. More and more I find Windows 8 to be appropriate for tablets and touch hardware but for engineers and software devs, it can be annoying.
Chrome the favoured browser on/. had a fair share of remote execution vulnerabilities over the last year or so. I really wish MS would provide 2 versions of their IE. One of end users and one for Enterprise. The boat load of extra security features in IE = large gaps to cover in QC... Just my 2 cents. I don't really care what browser people use as long as it works with our internal applications. Currently our internal apps support all 3 major browsers. Safari is black listed due to it's known issues with AJAX.
From a interface stand point I find the Windows Phone to provide the best experience. The new iOS does nothing but pretty up and old way of using a mobile device. I know I'm going to get the boot for mentioning an MS product on/. but if you try one you will agree with me that it is a very good experience. Like the Android phone it has a back button.
FYI, I have owned all 3 phones. More recently I have purchased an S3 but use a Ativ day to day. Best phone I owned.
SSDs are worth the money and the risk. Just be smart and have you're projects either on a raid 1 HD array or make sure you have backups. Considering who this guy is and the experience he brought to the community, it surprises me that his work would not be stored on a NAS or file server of some sort.
Also, does he not use source control for his projects? If so, does he not check-in the work as each milestone is reached?
Businesses love getting involved in education because you create a following. MS did in in the 90s and now Google is trying to put their name on education. Wether its a business decision or Google just being "PRO EDUCATION" is something only they know.
I didn't read the proposal in details but it sounds like they are trying to go head to head with Khan Academy.
There will always be a way around it. They'll keep upping the odds. Soon it'll be one strike. Then it'll be no strike. Then it'll be just talking about piracy.
I disagree with this for the sole reason that it has become harder to obtain content online. If you don't have access to a private tracker it is difficult to obtain quality content that is trust worthy. The technology to monitor and control traffic is becoming more affordable and technically advanced. My ISP already throttles only my Torrents (which are encrypted) at 100kb/s but opens up the pipe after midnight.
7 years is a long time for technology to improve. I mean, look at the Ford Focus. It parks with little to no help from the driver. I know it's a primitive example but it's an important one.
The way I see it whenever the car feels it cannot continue navigation it will park and ask the driver to take over. The result of this is less experienced drivers so I'm not sure how we benefit until the things are 100% self sufficient.

You know the Windows Phone hardware supports all those other choices too right?
You know you could have disabled the feature in windows right?
No different than a Windows user without a GUI in Linux. You know the system you work with.

OMG!! is right. They are increasing their market share contrary to what everybody on /. has been saying for the last 6 months.

We have to find something for human workers to do since they're jobs are being replaced by the chinese, automation or advanced robotix.

Yeah, lets start talking about old version of anything. In the present everything old seems to be garbage. I mean damn, a rotary phone, WTF WAS THAT!

Just saying that these have 0 ID. At least we have accounts with history...

When is /. going to remove the anonymous coward option? People should own up to their comments. Pussies I tell you.

Who can you trust? Nobody.
The second you link a device to a network you say bye bye to privacy. My 2 cents.

If I talk to my wife about guy stuff she doesn't talk to other women about it because they usually don't care about the topic.
Regareless, the wives will buy X-Box One if that's what their sons ask for X-Mas. You know how mothers are.
And they gave you a drivers license. I'm worried.
